Hi! Thanks for the invite!
My name is Nat, short for Nathalie. I live in Sweden but am originally from France and part of my heart is still in England where I lived for 8 years.

Family: a husband (sort of, not married... Yet) and a 9 year old son. We're getting a cat soon and a dog is on the cards in a couple of years

My story: done sports all my life but ones involving balls (soccer, european handball) or martial arts. Had to give up those games due to a bad knee. Not enough stability in it and I don't want to go through a big operation. So I have to choose less violent sports. Triathlon seemed like a good idea.

Qua mentionned that I am raising money for charity. Getting people to sponsor me for my race is a great way to make sure I go through with it. I have already 8 sponsors on my page, including some very good friends I don't want to let down. At the same time I am helping a cause I believe in. It's a win win situation. It's the 3rd time I do this (first 2 times were a 10k race and golf tournament).

Training: well, not so much at the moment. Had this idea about a month ago and did too much too soon and hurt myself. Hopefully it's nothing but I am getting it checked before I start again. Much slower this time, the race is in May next year, so plenty of time.

Beer: nothing beats a nice cold lager on a hot summer evening. Carlsberg is my favourite.

That's it for now, looking forward to exchanging with you!

New face. Cool. Welcome aboard Nat. Hope we can support you in your quest and look forward to conversing over the fine beers of the world.

BDAS-

One wild week here. Started out OK on Monday. Stomach Flu Tuesday. Daughter got it Thursday. Wife had minor surgery Friday. Long story short, I'm trying to rectify a very busy week with a lot of weekend activity. 4.2 mile run today. 8.2 mile long run tomorrow. 15 mpw this week. Only made it for 2 lifts this week.

Next week I'm back on track starting Monday. Lift legs and shoulders, so I get to swim, which will be a good recovery for my legs from running.

Goals next week. Lift at least 4x, hopefully 5. swim 2x long swim of 1000. run 4x, long run of 9.5, and 18 mpw.

Beer note: I had a Pumpkin Porter from Red Hook (anyone had this?) It really was quite good. I'm a hop head. I rarely step out of line, but when I do, I usually enjoy the experience, but I always get back in line.
The problem with the porter was that though I only had 1, I woke up with a hangover type headache/body ache in the morning. This happened twice. Though I enjoyed the Porter, I may have to pass on it next time. I have a similar physical reaction to Blue Moon. Splitting headache right down center of head. How could something that tastes so good, be so bad for you BDAS? It's really not fair.

Race-pace half marathon today, running around my neighborhood with an impromptu aid station in front of my house. Ran a 2:05 (9:30 pace), so that puts me on track for a 4:30 marathon. It's a nice way to clear the cobwebs as well.

Found a good deal on an electric smoker today too, so going to do some real barbeque for the holiday.

Charles - man, when you clear about the cobwebs you go to town! Way to get out there and get it done! A 2:05 HM during your training is great. Just think how fast you will run following a proper taper and with people cheering your on. I hope you are feeling more exciting about your training and situation. It sounds like a lot is going on in your life right now. Don't minimize getting a new dog. It can kind of be like having a baby - especially if it's a puppy and you are getting up to let it out during the night. I also think that being smack dab in the middle of your training should help too and you should regain that passion as your HM draws nearer.

Congrats on the TT. Excellent work!

Happy Sunday everyone! Hope everyone has something fun planned! I hope to tonight watching some NASCAR and drinking some tasty beverages. Right now, I'm drinking a homebrew experiment - a wheat beer made with Nelson Sauvin hops that gives the beer a slight lemon and winey taste. Pretty drinkable.

My trainer has promised to send me my training plan for today so I will try to post the goal chart later today.

Have a great day everyone!

I just got my training plan from my coach and I'm excited. It will take me from here to Thanksgiving and it's very conservative which I like. It's not rocket science - in fact - the run plan is adapted from Hal Higdon's HM plan, which I have used before. But the plan incorporates ITB rehab exercises, a stretching program and a dynamic stretching routine for me to do before going on a run (with the hope of not exacerbating the ITB). Hopefully - it will help me get going and god, I want to get going.

I was going to go for a bike ride today. In fact, I was dreamed and ready when I got the email about the new plan. Since today on the plan called for rest (I asked to take my rest days during weekends since I'm not working), I changed clothes, grabbed a beer and watched the rest of the sox game. I'm all about following the plan.

Sunday's long run is in the books. I am adjusting my goal for this week to do this distance again and not increase till the following week. I was on shaky legs at the end of my 8.2 miler and would have a challenge adding another mile and a half with another big hill. My 50K is next May, so I have LOTS of time to get ready. Just the way I like it!

I did Water Immersion Training afterwards. 10 minutes in an ice bath really helps with the lactic acid buildup.

For each goal I don't make this week, I am taking a 16 oz. warm Coors light penalty. I can only drink 1 penalty a day, and am not permitted a preferred beverage until my penalty is finished. If I fall flat on 4 of my goals, than I have a 4 day penalty of a warm 16oz. Coors waiting on the shelf for me. This is going to be a real challenge for me, as I LOVE enjoying MANY different FINE craft beers of all kinds.

Tomorrow is the start of a new week. Hope everyone is having a good one.

Charles - What did you sign up to do at IMWI? I had a blast helping out at the OLY tri last weekend and I can only imagine the experience will be even better considering it's a IM.

It's pretty cool that we will be doing on IM next year within two weeks of each other. We are gonna have a blast this year and I'm hoping to learn a lot from you in the coming months!

Good luck with your LSD next week. 16 miles isn't a cakewalk. Way to get it done!

I'm doing a bike aid station - ours is a superhero theme, so that should be fun. The shift seemed reasonable and I'll get to avoid most of the traffic around Madison proper.

It's really cool that we're both following a similar path. I've started a journal and a spreadsheet (in addition to my training log) to keep me honest. Right now, I'm 380 days away. I'm calling it "Iron Year," and we'll see how it goes.

Hope everyone is having a nice Labor Day. Just got back from the LICS (Local Ice Cream Shop) with the family. Ahh, the taste of summer.

Before going for a run today, I did dynamic stretching for the first time. My god, are my legs weak! THe walking lunges were no joke! Hopefully some added muscle will finally solve that ITB problem. I got my run in today - strength training tomorrow!

That guy is boss and those exercises rock. The ones I'm doing are a condensed version of his. Regardless which you do the key is to do them every day and don't cheat. I'm not strong enough yet to add in the theraband but it's getting closer. So my challenge still stands but with doing his program. Stop reading this post and go do your rehab! HAHA

Just got back home from Nick hotel and had a blast. 1 flat tire going up and another on the way home. I made the mistake of eating not so healthy one night and I paid for it. My belly was killing me and I almost lost it all. I guess I can't eat all the sweets and oily foods anymore.

For some reason my achilles is a tad tender but I think most of it is in my head since my next race is getting close. The same type aches and pains were bad a week or two before the last one. I'm taking it easy and slow but still training. Is this something any of you encounter?

Charles and David-
Cannot wait to see you guys through this IM thing this year. What a wild ride that'll be.

Alex- I had an Achilles injury from running a half mary at too fast of a pace. It lasted all the way through my basic and AIT in the army. I used to be able to hear the thing screech at me while I walked across a room. It sounded like when you take scicors to ribbon when wrapping presents each time I took a step.

I did nothing to treat mine, and it got bad. I imagine if you put foot in ice bath for 20 on, 20 off x2 twice daily and take IB's for inflammation, that thing will be right as rain by race day.

Got in my 1000 yd swim at 28:00 flat. Happy to have that done. counting laps is not my strength.

Chest and tri lift followed by a 4.4 miler tomorrow.

I checked on the HM in October, and it's $55. The full is $65. I'm going to pass on it and run a HM training run on that day in it's place. Goal will be 1:45 or Bust!

Cycling question:

Is 20 weeks long enough to prepare for a century with the goal of just finishing?  It's not a race its a tour.  They have a 15, 30, 62, or 100 mile rides and I don't know which I want to try for.  I will have an oly the weekend before so take that into consideration.  My training plan has me up to 2.5 hours the week of the ride so do I settle for the metric or add in some more bikes into the training plan and go for the gusto?  I don't want to get hurt so if it's a dumb idea to go long please let me know and keep me in check.

Sure 20 weeks is enough for finishing. I would also add a one long ride a week to the 2.5 hours though.

I think 20 weeks is totally doable. I would also agree with Thor. You need to get in a long ride of 60-75 miles prior to doing a century (thats something I did which got me both physically and mentally prepared. Also - putting in the time on the bike won't put as much of a toil on your body as running will. Just be cautious and follow the 10% rule. Finally - doing a century this season will help you prepare for IMFL next year!

Decided to not work out today. I was supported to do a strength workout and skipped it when I woke up this morning with sore legs from my new dynamic stretching routine. With the race on Saturday - it just didn't make sense for me to do it. I know this caution will help in the long run but I still feel guilty.

Tomorrow is a 2.5 run with dynamic stretching. Its also my daughter's first day of PK. Hard to believe!

Finally - great job on the goal sheet. While we started off with almost 20 people - it's good to see us vets getting it done!
