Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk thanks and very well spoken. We are doing exactly that here on Long Island. We've got a pretty large group of folks that are looking to organize a non-profit organization with all levels of experienced triathletes and endurance sport athletes. Since we train at Wildwood Lake we've deemed ourselves the Wildwood Warriors. The goal is to continue to grow the group, help each other out and have folks to train with as well as helping out those who are new to triathlon. We will focus on doing races for charity as well. I have to say triathletes are a special bunch of people, very passionate about the sport and always eager and will to help each out. I try and pay it forward any chance that I can do that and hopefully more so through the Warriors group. Dirk I'm also very glad hear that your friend is doing well and will be getting out of the hospital today. I hope he has a quick recovery. Dina good luck with the aqua/bike HIM. I think you are going to do just fine. Sounds like you won't have any problem with the swim. For the bike I'd try to push out my long rides to build the endurance a little. You still have a great base of training under you so if can get some long rides in there of 50 to 60 miles you'll be good to go. Besides you have 16 days and even you said you were going to do it the night before I'd figure you'd PR anyway :-) I did my longest training run I will do for IMW last night, 20 miles. The weather was perfect for it. I started in the afternoon and ended it at night but I did get it done. It was not an easy run, I kept the pace very easy but I'll have to admit it 10 miles in I knew it was going to be painful towards the end. The last 4 miles were tough for me. Not sure why, I was fine breathing wise but my legs were getting tired towards the end. The important thing was I stuck with it and got it done. I was smiling the first and the last mile because I knew this was last major milestone for me to hit. I'm done with all that now, just gotta finish out this week and next and it's onto the taper. Thank God for the taper and some rest and for helping me get this far lol. Edited by strikyr 2013-08-15 8:31 AM |

![]() | ![]() Sorry to be away, we have no internet at the lake but I can get on every once in a while. You guys are rock stars! Karl, no way you'll ever get kicked out of the junkies. It's epic to finish a tough race. Anyone can cruise through when everything is clicking, only a junkie toughs it out no matter what. Unless it's stupid to continue on. Sometimes the best decision is to DNF, and THAT takes a truly strong person to make that decision. Dina, great race and your race day bike woes are amazing. Next time you will have no issues. Tracy, wow is all i can say. Awesome race. Tony, as we've all said, you are totally ready. Enjoy your taper and trust the training you've done. Dirk, prayers with you as always. On the nutrition front, i agree with liquid on the bike. I can tolerate almost anything on training rides, but race day I stick to a home made concoction of liquid only calories. This is pretty personal, so practice it on some training rides, hopefully at close to race pace so you know your body can handle it at that intensity. |

![]() | ![]() As for me, I have a little issue. Ever since the car "accident", I've had trouble at letting my speed get up in the bike. My nerves just kick in once I get to 32-33, which just happens to be the exact speed I was going when the car hit me. This is really a problem for Timberman since it's a course you really need to run out the downhills to make up for speed you've lost on the uphills. I'm going for one last ride on the hills today mostly to try to hammer down them to get my guts back. This is a totally foreign feeling for me since I've always been a death defying type - extreme skiing for years, parachute club member and firefighter, etc. I am a little concerned. Send me some good vibes. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, sounds like your good to go your your upcoming IM, Im sure you will do the Junkie's proud. Dirk, I hope your friend makes a quick recovery, Sounds like he is starting to do better. Just about to head out to the lake for a lunch swim on the course for this Sunday. Weather still looks to be good. They are calling for temps in the high 60's in the morning and light winds. Should be a good racewith a tough field of about 40 or so in the Olympic race. Hopefully I can put in a good performance. A local roadie is doing this as his second ever tri, his first was two weeks ago. He weakest event is swimming where he managed to flail(as he put it) to a 1:49/100m then rode the 40k at over 25 mph and ran the 10k in 40 flat. He crushed everyone by 4-5 minutes. I just hope when he goes by me on the bike he doesnt leave me too demoralized, lol. Should be a great weekend. I have a RR up on Sunday night or Monday hopefully. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Warren I can fully understand your apprehension on the bike after what happened. I think I was a little tenative the first few rides after I went down the first time. I think you should just get out there and ride today, don't think about anything just ride. You have a title to defend over at Timberman. Derek hope you have a good swim today and you'll do just fine this weekend. Don't worry about the speedy guy just do your thing out there this weekend and you'll have a great race. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just want to reiterate what Tony said a few posts back, I REALLY appreciate all the mentors and the mentees of the Junkies. I was/am a real newbie. I didn't even know how to run, I was constantly injured. I do want to say the Junkies have the patience of Job. They kept telling me to run often and slow but I can from a lifting backgground and that just didn't make sense. It took a LOT of persuading and kicking by everyone but it finally set in. I also learned how to bike more efficiently. Now if ya'll just teach me how to swim! ![]() Actually I swam today, it was short just a little over 1,000 yards and it was easy, a lot easier than the race last weekend. I do have swim lesson this Saturday to see if that will help, I may be beyond help.... I'll let ya'll know... Also thanks for putting up w/ my very dry sense of humor... Derek, good luck this weekend, we are all pulling for you! |

![]() | ![]() Originally posted by JeffY Originally posted by wbayek Suck it up Buttercup! ![]() I knew I'd get lots of sympathy from the junkies! I did ride the start and end of the course this morning, which is the hilliest part. Got up to 42, but the winds were whipping me around pretty good. I will not use the front race wheel it it's that windy on race day, but it's supposed to be much calmer. |

(what, you weren't thinking I would do it were you?) Well..........you never know Jeff. In any case from what I've read it sounds like the city and WTC will put on a good race and the course sounds like it'll be pretty nice. I might be interested in doing this one in the future, just not next year :-) |

![]() | ![]() Originally posted by KWDreamun Actually I swam today, it was short just a little over 1,000 yards and it was easy, a lot easier than the race last weekend. This does support the thought that you went out too hard in the race. This is such a common thing that I think it's almost impossible to NOT do it. Everyone swims those first 50-100 yards like it's a swim meet. If you're competing for an ITU podium, or may be important to stay with the front wave, otherwise it's best to swim only as hard as you can maintain your form. The interesting side note on this is that I think we'd all be shocked how little time difference there is between "all out" and swimming only as hard as possible with our best form. Good luck on the lesson. It can really help to have someone watch and point out some obvious flaws. What we think we're doing and what we're actually doing in the water are often dramatically different. |

I never used to have a care in the world on my bike until that fateful ride when I wiped out in the gravel and wound up with 2 years of back pain. I just know exactly how you feel! Good vibes coming your way. |

I swam so easy on Tuesday and checked my time for the first out across the lake and I think I was a minute slower than I normally am which was very surprising because I swam sloooooow! I guess it doesn't say much for my swimming. |

Warren, I've still got some scars and one bump from the last time I went down... and I've been taking corners SUPER slow... ha! I think once you get on the course, your competitiveness will kick in and you'll be flying down those hills... ha! |

I saw this today myself, and quite frankly it throws me into a quandary. I don't know if I want to do IMWI or IMCH now. There are no course maps or profiles to view but the area around Chattanooga is beautiful. It would be a little bit longer drive for me to IMCH but it would seem pretty awesome to do this event because it's the first time for it. What to do? What to do? |

Dirk registration is on Sept. 4th so you do have some time. Check the thread in triathlon talk there was some discussion there about the elevation of the course. I think WTC should have that info before registration opens. It sounds like a pretty nice course and the swim will be similiar to IMLOU. I also like the late September date for being able to maximize outdoor training. I may have to consider this one in the future, just sayin :-) |

As I said in a recent post, I tell people to go easy on the swim and when they think they're going about the right speed........SLOW DOWN!!! You're going too fast!! The first 100 or so yards seem to catch up to you about 250 or so into the swim when you become out of breath and exhausted. SLOW DOWN!!! And swim at a comfortable pace, especially for the first 100+ yards. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Here's my splits from tonight easy 4 mile run....... Mile 4 had me crossing the road twice when I needed to accelerate some to clear some oncoming traffic. I wonder what that split would have looked like had I been able to keep things at the pace I was running. I felt really amazing tonight! Just thought I'd share. |

Just thought I would throw it out there in case any of you are wanting one and not sure which to get... this one is good. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We are in the middle of a heat wave right now. We reached a record high temp for today of 73 degrees! (I saw 80 degrees on my house thermometer in the shade, though.) My run this evening was pretty miserable. I'm running away from all of you now. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tracy, heat wave...lol Warren, just ahve fun on the bike, let the wind cool you down and keep the bugs out of your teeth...lol Will, have you run in the camel back? I see a lot of people arond ehre doing that, try it and let me know how you like it. Also, how do you clean it? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK 1 more swim question, I'm starting to realize I do not know how to site, in the pool so it is something I haven't practiced that much. I have been practicing but probably doing it all wrong. I'm trying to breathe to my right side and roll my head up front to see where I'm going but if I do it fast, I don't see anything and also when I come down in the water, I seem to get water up my nose and I seem to almost stop. When I site, I get like 10 X more tired, any drills for this? hints? Come on fish, no holding out..lol |
