![]() The good news: I picked up my new PT wheel yesterday after work. My garmin is in Hawaii, but won't be delivered until Tuesday...so I had no reason to use the wheel this weekend. The bad news: I broke a spoke on my existing rear wheel this morning. Actually, the spoke diddn't break, the hub where the spoke connects broke off. Weird. The wheel went totally untrue and I could hear it rubbing against my brake and my rear wheel cutout. I was able to ride back to my car (about 9 miles or so) going really slow. Funny thing was, I kind of enjoyed just cruising at 12 mph. My 1 month old tire is now questionable...all the rubbing wore out part of the side wall and I can now see some of the wiring. Looks like it's a trainer tire now. The irony: At least I can swap out my new PT wheel for my rear wheel...which I was going to do anyway. So I'm going to change the cassette off, and try to ride again tomorrow. I'll likely get on the trainer later today to make up the 30 or so miles I still need to put in. |

![]() I'm also glad this didn't happen in the past 3 weeks. I raced the same rear wheel the last 3 weeks, so if it's time to break, today was a good a time as any. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() David- I like the 2nd pic best, where it's early and you can see the mist in the air. Everyone else- I love the new pics on your profiles & on the COJ thread. Cool to see what everyone looks like. Wimped out of a group ride today cause I thought I might be too slow for them. There was no beginner group scheduled for today, only and intermediate. I've been out with the beginner group and it was easy for me, so I might be able to do intermediate. I guess I'm gonna just have to try it and not care if I get dropped (I don't know if they drop people, but I don't like the idea of everyone waiting for me either) I did weights and a spinning class instead. First master's class is this Tues. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() what a difference a week makes. I had my second OWS today and the water temp was incredibly warmer than it was last week. We have had a full week of temps in the mid to upper 80's and it really increased the water temp more than I thought it would have. My swims have been in a 3/4 acre pond so I know the small size would have something to do with the warmer temp but with the wetsuit it almost felt like bathwater in spots where it was shallow. I swam and estimated 1000 yards in something like 20 minutes but both are estimates. There is no way to measure the distance correctly and the time is rounded based on when I sent a couple of text messages right before entering the water and right after exiting. This was a much better swim than last week! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() all, back now and should be around a lot more, season is winding down. the girls did amazingly well at nationals. it was awesome to get there today for the finals and see so many other teams packing up to head home and knowing we still had 3 races to go! we had 5 varsity boats this year, and 4 made it to nationals with 3 making the finals. manyother teams there had 10-20 boats total and only a few made nationals and even less the finals, so good all around. My girls ended up 6th, 4th, and 3rd in their races out of the whole country, so a great end to the season! On the water in the midwest, that color was from a HUGE thunderstorm that rolled through about 4 hours prior to the race and dumped 5 inches of rain. |

![]() David, Congrats on your boats. That's an amazing accomplishment to have three boats place out of the entire country. You must be like the John Wooden of rowing coaches. |

![]() changed my cassette to the PT wheel, got a new tire and some new tubes with longer valves (60cm) to make it easy with the new 30mm deep rim. I also got some good practice in the process of changing my tubes. My TT bike is the first time I'm working with folding tires, as my road bike tires were non folding. It's actually pretty easy...I practiced a few extra times while I was at it. All set to go for my ride tomorrow. I'm still planning on doing 50, but if I feel good, I'm going to add another 20 mile loop of mostly flat riding since todays ride got cut short. Going to start bright and early tomorrow...about 5:45 am once it's fully lighted. Hoping to be off the road by 10am. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today was a rough first day of work for the summer. This is the third year of the pool being opened and we had our first spinal emergency. It is going to be even hotter tomorrow which means even more patrons. The cool thing about being a senior lifeguard is that I have Memorial Day off for the first time ever. I don't even remember what holidays feel like. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've got a 5mile run on the plate for today. My legs are feeling pretty dead from a big week and being on my feet all day yesterday for work. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What a great run. I finally got the idea to stretch out my quads which made my legs feel like new. 45mins at an easy pace. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Took the road bike out this morning since it was raining when I left my house...but should have taken the tri bike. It was actually very dry during my ride, and super windy. I went out solo, so there was nobody to draft. The wind brought me to my knees. Ended up going almost 56 miles at a 16.2 mph pace. Not bad considering my legs were actually a bit sore from yesterday's ride and exercise bike session. Debating whether I'll ride tomorrow morning to take advantage of the holiday...or just rest up. Resting is winning right now. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will be on a bus a lot of tomorrow headed for Gettysburg and DC for my final field trip with my daughter. No training will probably be taking place until Saturday with exception to a ?possible? run tomorrow night, 5k at best. The itinerary is VERY packed from 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM everyday and we will be walking as much as 10 miles a day. While I would like to be doing some last minute training for my first tri the week after I get back, I wouldn't trade it for the world. My time with my daughter is will be awesome and it will be something we both will be able to talk about for the rest of our lives. We will be "making memories." I just got back from my last long ride before the trip. 42.2 miles in 2:15 (18.7 avg.) and it felt good for the most part. The temp was 87 but the humidity was 30% so it didn't kill me for it to be hot. I also took about 65oz. of fluids and some Clif shots for some nutrition. It was a good ride. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Did my 1st run with a running group I joined to train for the HM in Dec. I went with the pace leader who was doing 3 miles at a 10-11 min/mile pace and was able to keep up. The group meets to run every Sunday morning until the HM, so I think it will be a really good thing to keep me on track with my training during the week (knowing that my Sunday run will just keep getting longer and longer and I'll have to get in weekday training to be prepared). My masters class starts Tues, so hopefully that will help my swim. Just 1.5 more days of school with the kids and 3 more full workdays for the teachers until summer break. By Friday I'm a free woman and to celebrate, I'm going on a long bike ride with my friend from work. Plans to take me to Red Rock (if you know the Vegas area-it's got some tough climbs) and kick my butt. You may recall last time I went there I was climbing up one of the hils at 4 mph- so slow I almost fell into a cactus. P.S. Sorry, little off topic but if you're interested check out the cutest photo of my baby taken today http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=210111&start=21&posts=40 Gotta scroll all the way to the bottom Edited by jpbis26 2010-05-30 10:29 PM |

![]() Hello everyone, I have been away from BT for a while. In the meantime the group seems to gain about 15 more pages ![]() I will try to read it all and see what happened in thr group but first I've got a question. I did a 10K running race yesterday. At training season's start (November 2009 for me), I've set myself o goal of breaking 40 minutes for 10K by the end of May. So I attended a 10K race (which is in short supply in our country) to try and break 40. But to my shock there was too much climbing in the race. I checked with somebody else's Garmin data and saw that the elevation gain was 519 ft. I started the race with the intention of doing 3:55-4:00 per km. I hit the first km at 3:55, and just going at my normal pace, then a downhill before the second and I hit the 2 km mark at 7:43, but I since it included a downhill I was cautious, then the climbs began and all the pace was off. Anyway, I finished at 41:06 My question is, can I do a sub-40 10K on a flatter course? I know, it is hard to answer but if you have raced similar races, you can compare your flat and "hilly" race times. I really do not have much race experience. This was my 3rd ever running race (all 10K's). I know I cannot push myself enough at training and there are no 10K races around, so I am trying to "feel" if I have achieved my goal. |

I was just there in April at the tail end of the Cherry Blossom Festival with the family. It was a great trip. LOTS of walking... you will get exercise just by all the walking. I think my daughter skipped the entire time too. Have fun!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() what a cutie!!! It is hard to remember when mine were that small and it was only a few years ago!! As for your training - it sounds like you are rocking it! I wish there were some groups around here - I train 95% by myself and sometimes the motivation slips. Have a great holiday day! |

My goal also is to run a 10k under 40 and a sub 20 5k. I've kind of been in the same boat as you because I haven't had many running races available that would work to my advantage to meet those goals. Before my oly a few months ago I ran a practice 5k in 20:50 and in my first du on May 1st I ran approx 21' 5ks for both. Since I had stellar runs even with a 100% effort bike in the middle, I feel that in a running race I would have met my goal. Since I don't have any 4ks scheduled to go sub20, in my mind I know I can. I'm just going to try to go sub 20 for the sprints I have this summer. Cute kid Jackie! |
