Glad to see that all of the Northerners have been able to get outside to ride this week. Your warmer temps are still cold! We've had beautiful weather this week. I'm looking forward to a warm and windy ride outside tomorrow morning.

This morning I had a big milestone in spin class.  I ended up at over 200 watts average for the hour. I was at about 140 watts average when I began just before Christmas and I have steadily increased over the following three months. My watt/kg for the hour is about 2.4 right now. After hearing everyone talk about power testing over 3 and 20 minutes, I'm curious at what I might be at. I didn't really know what the benefit of doing spin class would be on the actual road but I can feel the power translating over the the bike.

It's suppose to rain here most of the weekend and I'm working overtime but Saturday and Sunday so training will be limited over the next couple of days.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

I'm waiting for the sun to come up and the fog to lift before starting out on my 3 hour ride. 1.5 hour swim on the schedule for later in the day.

**Congrats on the power increase!

WKO+ lists both ride time and total time.

Having the method be consistent is key. If you go by total time your speed could be significantly effected. If RaceDay uses total time it will make your vi or his name for vi higher with stops with power at zero.  One positive is when you go to race your VI will be instantly better and closer to one as you won't have any stops.

If you do race rehearsals you may want to calculate both ways with and without stops to see where you were vi wise.

Nice that you were able to get out for long ride. Roads are a mess here.  I just put on my saddle bag before ride yesterday and yep got a flat. Interesting to change a flat with snowbanks and lots of sand on side of the road plus super dirty bike.

Todd, you may want to do a test if you could fit it in as the results could help you set up zones plus it would be fun to track your progress. You have gained a lot of watts very quickly so clearly what you are doing is working.

Have fun with your ride and swim today Rene!

I have 2 hour ride on CT today with lots of time at sweet spot which is about 86% of my FTP or near top of zone 3. Two years ago my coach had my avoid zone 3. Last year I had a hard time keeping watts steady and in zone 3 most of the season so it has been a focus for me this winter. It was odd how zone 2 and zone 4 I could execute well. Zone 3 isn't as hard but takes a different kind of focus to keep it steady for me.

Todd great job on the improvement!

The spin bikes that they have at my local LA Fitness are Keiser M3's and I love them. They have constant power readings and average power readings.

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-19 3:13 PM Well there were 45mph wind gusts today, so it was a trainer ride for me. My schedule is as follows:
Train Sunday-Tues as usual. Then we leave for Disney. I may be out of contact for a bit depending on wifi access, but I have no doubt you folks will carry-on just fine without me.

I will definitely update my log via the Android.

Is there an app for that?

Sweet spot ride went well....I've ridden almost 6 hours last 3 days. Building some bike volume in hopes of handling spring training camp's bike volume okay.

I leave next Thursday flying to Tampa and driving with a BT friend who is moving to South Texas. Not sure what training I'll get in but some runs and hope to swim a couple days.

Just wanted to let you know I made my blog private.

I'm frustrated with some things and need to stew a bit in private.

Fred Doucette - 2011-02-20 7:49 PM

Just found out that a good friend of mine's (and a former BTer) wife died today. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had a short battle.

His screen name here was Daremo and he ruffled a few feathers from time to time, but he was pretty helpful to me as a new triathlete in 2006-2007. He hasn't been participating in tri's in awhile as he has a heart problem as well (a. fib).

3 very young kids as well

Fred, thanks for letting us know. I can't even begin to imagine what he is going through right now. I remember reading some of his posts when I first started on BT. Praying for him and his family.

Very sad.  Hard to imagine dealing with that situation.

Kathy-hope things get better and these are not long term issues.

I'm back home after being gone since Thurs. am.  Was able to get a couple of short runs in and a spin on the bike after getting home this afternoon.  Big drop in volume and intensity over the past week.  Looking forward to getting back into my regular routine for a couple of weeks.

Hope things brighten up in the coming week for those dealing with tough times. Safe travels to everyone heading out on vacation-ENJOY!

Randy

I was away from BT for the weekend and came back to read some bad news here.

I hope everything is OK for you Kathy.

And thanks for sharing the sad news about Daremo.  I only know of him from reading his posts on BT.  He was very active here when I was just getting (back) into triathlon, and I know he had some problems with his heart that caused him to limit/quit training.  So sad to hear about his wife.

Late last week we also learned some bad health-related news about the young daughter of a colleague.

Hard to know how to process this stuff.
