Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Morning all! Slept in and now trying to clear the cobwebs enough to head out for a ride. Swam and ran yesterday, the swim was good but the run was not fun. Just had to gut it out. For the swim I was talking with my Masters coach and asked her about swim paddles (had read a thread over on ST about them) and she recommended a brand. But she loaned me a pair of her 2nd choice. These are pretty much held on by one thread around your middle finger. Really emphasizes good mechanics or they fall off. Used them for 550 yards then swam without. Wow, a difference that I could feel and it was great. Not a big fan of using swim aids too much I will incorporate these. Received my TI DVD's and book. Book is aimed at Triathletes but a bit old. Refers to gas going over $2/ gal. So far the book hasn't told me much I haven't heard (Long body, etc) but only 1/2 thru. Will watch the videos tonight. Dorm - foot cramp while swimming is a common occurance. It can be related to pushing off on the wall too hard. The long term solution seems to be swim more and eventually they go away. Potassium helped me somewhat and always have a X-ade drink with me when I swim. Once you get one you can either stop and stretch or you can try writing the alphabet with your foot (I think Elizabeth recommended this one) to work out the cramp. |

I get these from time to time and the only way I can seem to relieve it is to stop and stand up. Do you get these, what seems to be the stimulus and is there a way to avoid? It seems for me these occur mostly after pushing off from the wall, but what is your experience? Nothing worse than having to stop in the pool during a race because of a cramp.
I don't get foot cramps but overheard someone that did receive the advice to eat more bananas and drink more electrolytes. Can't hurt.
Have fun on your ski trip! |

Have fun on your ski trip! Dorm. - I occasionally get foot cramps and don't know what causes them. I too usually just have to stop and massage my foot. Sometimes I keep swimming but just stop kicking the leg. It usually resolves itself in less than 50 yards. Knock on wood it hasn't ever hapenned in a race. I had a nice long run this morning and will go for a ride tomorrow This 6 days a week plan is kinda kicking my butt right now but I know that I'll get used to the increased volume soon. Dorm - very jealous about your second ski trip. Where are you going? Enjoy! |

SLC ... these have begun to have decent snow over the last 2-3 weeks so we're headed out. Up until 2 weeks ago we were poised to cancel, but plans are to go now. Love that Utah powder. My family has skied/boarded as a family for 12 years or so now and once the daughters married, all except 1, married skier-snowboarders who love to go as well. So we go as a family every other year. On the swim-foot cramps, I mostly notice these from pushing off the wall, so it may be I'm pushing off too hard. The cramp is more of a nuisance, but I can't straighten out my foot and I hate swimming with it pointed down and just dragging in the water. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Quick flyby. Planning a 6 mile run then watching the Superbowl commercials. The game interests me less than the commercials, hopefully they will be good. Body has gone a bit off as I am eating junk and a lot of it (DW is out of town) but I am losing weight. 3-4lbs in the last 4-5 days. Hmm maybe I can make it to 170 which I haven't seen since college. So far on the TI video its a lot of what my Masters coach taught me except for one key item that I emailed her about. When you extend the hand for a stroke the TI video has it placed at an angle about 30-40 degrees down. Whereas my outreach is about 10 degrees. Not sure if that is my mistake or just a fundamental difference in teach styles. Thoughts? |

Whereas my outreach is about 10 degrees. Not sure if that is my mistake or just a fundamental difference in teach styles. Thoughts? First off, I am amazed when I watch TI videos at how smooth and fast the swimmers are with little motion. From your question, I believe extending your arm in this downward angle works like a type of pontoon and/or rudder. First off it adds some buoyancy with just being out there, and then the downward angle ... doesn't this work to keep the torso more level? As well, doesn't this affect the legs and feet, wherein it makes or helps these rise? Edited by Dorm57 2012-02-06 6:20 AM |

May miss a workout the next day. Hey,question,I noticed on my run Sunday that the front of my ankles kept getting tighter with each run walk rep. It got a little bothersome. Should I do some sort of exercise for that? Weird how it just started with no off time. Enjoy your weeks! |

Dorm - I am talking with my masters coach who taught me a lot of the things that TI is teaching but the arm down is difference in technique. For now I am sticking with how she taught me but we will be discussing in-person soon. Texas - Not sure what to tell you on that one. Did you stop and stretch? New distance? |

Can you just point your toe and circle it around and stretch it that way? Sometimes that makes my feet feel better I'm not a huge believer in stretching, except for my hamstrings. I've also read mixed reviews about it. But every night I lay down with my butt against the wall and my feet straight up in the air against the wall and it feels soooooo good. I dont know if it helps keep my injury free but I know when I dont do it I just feel stiffer and creak-ier. Hope everyone is having a good week. I slept in through my morning trainer ride this morning so will swim at lunch and then hopefully get in a short run tonight. |

Then it was stretching is evil! Then its stretching, when done properly, can be beneficial. My take: Stretching after a run or after you have warmed up can help. In your case where you reported tightness I think doing some stretching after the muscles are warmed up would be helpful. When I did PT they would always have me warm up then stretch. Just my two cents worth. |

Thinking I am coming down with a cold as my allergies have gone haywire which is usually the first sign for me. Easy swim today and a run tonight. How is everyone's training? Training is going well. Picking up the running adding some "speed" work. Knees are a bit sore cycling which could be due to the speed work (or the 2 hour and 45 minute trainer ride Sunday). Extreme fitness class is going well too. It combines swimming sprints with push ups, burpees, squats, etc on deck. Pretty intense. |

Pretty intense. That class sounds like a blast and a great workout! I'm short one run and one swim this week. I have been to spinning class twice and will go again tomorrow night. I didn't do my Wednesday morning run due to pain in my right hip. It seems better today so I will run in the morning. I skipped my swim tonight as I have knot in my right shoulder blade that needs to be worked out. I really feel it when I extend my right arm or tip my head to the right. I was 50/50 if I should go or not so I tossed a coin! Sometimes a good swim works them out other times it makes it worse. Other than spinning I just didn't feel like I was on my game this week. The weather is going to be cold this weekend (24 for the high) so no riding. I will run and swim both days amd I'll also get in an hour spin session on my own. I'm really hooked on "Sweatfest" that I downloaded for free from Trihardest. Great music, good hills and some jumps mixed in. It does what it says, I'm soaked by the end of the workout! |

I'll have to download that workout. If you have a knot somewhere, consider buying "the stick" and rolling it out. If you can't reach the spot, have your husband or a friend do it. It hurts, but really helps. |

Expert 819 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed Just got back uesday night from Sarasota, FL. I did my "long" run outside with shorts and a T-shirt. Amazing running at 7am in 65 degrees and sunny. Did 8.5 miles at a 9:35 pace. Not amazing but reasonable. I ran across the Sarasota Bay Bridge, which I did not realize was quite a climb, until I was on it. Out and back over that really killed my pace.
Hit the Drainer for an hour yesterday and planning 1:40 this weekend for my long "ride".
I am wondering why I live in the north. It was sunny today, but a high of only 35. What am I doing in Michigan???
My best to all. I will be on BT at night. I am starting a 5 day night shift stretch tonight. Happy training! |
