croixfan - 2011-08-05 7:52 PM Finally got off my backside and got back to exercising.  Headed out for a run after work.  27:54 for 3.4 miles.  Check points were 9:42, 4:16, 4:13, 9:42!  Effort was slightly harder than normal, but body felt great.  Was a little more winded at the end of this effort.  Checked my PR and it's at 27:51, so this was definitely a good effort / I'm pleased with the run!

Nice run, Curt!!

Thanks. I'm going to try 150 truly continuous next week.

Are you sure you're willing to pay the mail costs to send stuff to me, lol

Hope the balloon ride goes well.

I'm starting to toy with the idea of doing the sprint distance at race 5 of the tri-series my mini-sprint is race 1 of. It's in the same location so it'd bring me full circle. The distances for that are 750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run - it's in late march which would give me about 20 weeks between them.

It'd be a good way for me to figure out how long it takes stuff to get from the US to your part of the world before I move. =)

Did you look at the race results from last year for that tri-series?  It's a good idea to guestimate where you'll finish.  It's helpful to figure out if it may be the right race or too challenging.   20 weeks is great for giving you enough time to train your weaknesses, figure out your strengths, and figure out how to race your strengths. =)

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE!!!

Tomorrow is my third tri! Its basically the same as the last one, but this time I have my inhaler! My coach has me aiming for a finish of 2 hours or less (Last time I finished at 2:54)--Strangely enough, I think I can at least get close to that time--Truthfully, I will be happy if I finish faster than the bottom ten overall! Laughing--that would be my best finish!

Anyway, wish me luck, off I goooooo!!!!!

GO! GO! GO!  Hope you're having a GREAT race!!!!!!!!  Kick some butt!

You'll do great -- was showing a co-worker our group the other day and told her about all your gains and how much fun it is to be part of a group like this.  I'll be watching for the race report!

ETA -- 17 mile ride this AM in the rain with a group of guys I met.  First time I've ridden in the rain and it was not bad.  Actually really nice to be in cool weather for a change.  Only challenge was when the lead guy started to push through an intersection and then backed off -- I locked up the bike and went in to a lovely fish tail.  Fortunately I saved it and got unclipped, but there were certainly a few moments of fear there!

While we don't enjoy moments like that, it's why we practice and train so that we get better at reacting when something unexpected happens.  Nice job riding in the rain!

Hey all, The race went really well today! My 1/2 mile swim was 'easily' completed (i.e. slow, but with minimal breaks, and NO breathing issues!), according to unofficial timekeeping (my watch) it took 30 minutes, The bike went REALLY well, it was 16 miles, and I shaved off ten minutes from last time, coming in at 1 hour; the run was also quite good, 3 miles taking about 38 minutes--that one I am not completely sure of...Anyway, my total time was around 2 hours and 13 minutes---SO much improvement, from 2:50!!!! As soon as they post the actual time, I will write up my report (hopefully tomorrow. Needless to say, I am quite happy!

Next race will be the Luna Woman's Triathlon Festival (sprint) on September 11! Same venue, with a longer bike(20 Miles) and run(4 miles).

Glad you saved it. The only time I've had issues so far is when someone beeped at me out of nowhere and when I really bumped the speed up yesterday.

dumb question:

Is it normal to lose some balance on the bike when going really fast?

Sara - not yet. I will though. I know I'll probably be towards the end though. If I don't do the sprint 20 weeks after the mini though I'll probably redo the mini to see how much improvement I've made. Depends whether I decide to race that or volunteer at IM Melbourne though as they're on the same day.

Light Up The Sky – Van Halen

Animal – Nickelback

Feel So Numb – Rob Zombie

Edge of Glory – Lady Gaga

Ok...this is odd I know, but I really like Brittany Spears-Circus. When it comes on, I seem to put some pep into my workout!

China Grove – Doobie Brothers

Paparazzi – Lady Gaga

Uh oh, that's a pretty short play list!  I can round it out since I have all sorts of music.  Keep the suggestions for our groups playlist coming!  I think it'll be a fun memento of this summer, after the group is done.

Hello all! I had to back track a bit to see what you all have been up to! Kate, nice job on your tri! Fantastic improvements!

I'm having a day off today...I put in a hard week of workouts, longest yet. Got in 72 miles on the bike, 3200 yards in the pool and over 9 miles running. My lower back is sore, I think from the bike. I've been riding with groups that are a bit stronger than me and have been pushing the pace and the hills. Good for me, but I hadn't planned on a rest day due to leaving for vacation on THursday and knowing that the taper week will be a bit longer than a week. Oh, well. Can't tri if you are injured. So a laundry/tv/hair coloring day for me! (The grays are taking over!)  Iron girl is just 2 short weeks away. I plan to hit it hard Mon-Wed and get up really early for a run on Thursday before we start traveling at like 6 am...We will see how that goes! Some treadmill and stationary bike at the hotels and on the ship should keep me where I am at least.

I never did get in any OWS. At this point, I could get one in...but if it goes badly I will worry the whole time. If it goes badly at the race, I will just suck it up and finish. I did a lot of it last year and was pretty comfortable with it. It should be fine. I also signed up for a tri the week after IG. Presque Isle Tri is a nice one if anyone is in this neck. It does close early, so get your app in asap.

Have a good week, everyone!

I've been planning on it, but there aren't too many ideas I've seen that are feminine.  Hubby got a big ol' M dot on his right calf (supposedly so people can see it better when he passes them). =)

That's a good question (not dumb)!

I found that I was wobbly as I was getting comfortable cruisin' at higher speeds.  Your body is going to have to adjust to reacting quicker to bumps in the road.  With practice the balance will come.

My outer quad hurts so no running today and no money to swim - well I can swim (already paid) but I can't get a drink or anything - so technically a URD although I kept my peachy birthday month going with 17 mins of Home improvement in the guise of pegging laundry out, lol. That counts right? It still means twisting and raising arms above head to do so, lol.

Ended up going for a run and it helped. I think the quad is more to do with the way I normally sit rather than sport related.

Hey, everyone. Looks like lots happening here!

I had a decent weekend, and hit the 'reset' button on my planning for the next few weeks. I missed a few days last week for a number of reasons, so I'm repeating last weeks plan in full to befor moving on.

Saturday was a mechanically shortened bike ride. Had issues with the rear tire rubbing on the seat post cut-out, and the other was the front deraileur having problems going from big to small ring. Took it to the LBS, and all is now well. And I learned how to fix it myself in the future. Did buy a small seat post bag for a tube/CO2/tire levers.

Sunday AM was the swim workout to make you cry. My masters swim class started back up, and there were about 8 people there. I was the only one in the 'beginner' lane which suited me fine. After a 500 yard warm up, I did nothing but drills for the following hour. Shark fin/catch up/side kick/'head first' balance/one arm, etc. Oh, and did I mention all of these were done while holding onto tennis balls? When I was done, I was totally croaked. The remainder of the day I felt it. Nothing sore, just an overall lack of energy. Was a fantastic swim session. Was able to 'swim' for the last 5 minutes, as the coach wanted to see the results of my drill work. He said it looked fantastic, and offer a couple of small pointers. I felt super sleek and streamlined in the pool. Looking forward to my next class!

Ran this AM as well. Just brutal humidity and heat at 4:30 AM. I sweat more on this run (just 30 minutes/3.4 miles) than I have doing just about anything. Next few days will be more of the same. Oh, fun!

I've seen tons of people writing about tennis balls when they swim.  What's your opinion of it? Do you think it's helping while you do the drill work?  Is it helping you keep your elbow high or is it just reminding you to cup your hand?

The tennis balls were a great tool for developing a feel for hand entry and for the pull. You really had to be sure where your hand/arm was going when you took a stroke as you couldn't control it as much as you could with a 'normal' open hand. Their boyancy also forced you to fight them to some extent to keep your hands/arms where they should be. Using them during the drills makes them harder to do, no doubt.

The payoff comes when you can finally get rid of them. You feel so fast & smooth with the stroke/entry/pull its amazing.  My stroke count never went over 16 per 25 the entire day (once I was allowed to swim! ).

Mike - good luck with the repeat week. Great job on the low SPL. I need to reassess mine soon because I have a feeling they are going down.

Sara - I thought so, then again you counted washing the dishes, lol.
