Expert 977 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread MRDAVIDALEXANDER - 2012-10-25 1:40 PM Should I try to leave Wednesday instead? Look at the tracking map. You might be better off leaving Thursday as it should be past you. On Wednesday it looks to be right off the coast. But, that is also 6 days away, it could peter out by then too. Living in Florida I have given up on trying to plan around storms. I've changed flights only to have them cancel and the original flight be OK. I stopped trying http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at3.shtml?5-daynl?large#contents Good luck, Duane |

Member 186 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread MRDAVIDALEXANDER - 2012-10-25 1:05 PM I really don't think you will have an issue. Typically these storms are not bad at all on the west side. All the bands tend to wip around from east to north (as the rotation is counter clockwise) Also even if bands are coming through it shouldn't delay your flight for more than a few hours but I don't think you will have any problem at all. P.S. I fly for a living. For all those that travel by air a lot.....major storm is going to hit east coast Mon-Wed. I am leaving Boston at 0600 Thursday AM (11/1/12) for Florida. What are the chances my flight leaves on time? What are the chances I get out at all? |

New user 15 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Swimming start question: This is my last big internal fuss. How do I chose where to start? Alone in the gulf, I swam 2.4 in 1:30. I have a IM veteran friend urging me to take advantage of the draft by throwing myself into the melee. She broke her finger during the swim! I'm not completely against this, but trying to figure out how I decide where to start and how to seed myself. Any insights? (My HIM was wave start with about 150 people. The shorter races were all waves of 20-100). Thank you!) |

Seed yourself up current and mid way in pack. You don't want to be up front where people are going to run over you but you also don't want to be running over the really slow swimmers and slowing yourself down and wasting energy. I volunteered last year and watched the swim start. There was a decent current pushing the pros to the left (West). Use it to your advantage. Good luck! |

Expert 977 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Last year I ended up off to the right to take advantage of the current. Seeded pretty much in the middle like you are planning. It wasn't that bad. Yea all the way out there were peeps all around but I found a bit of swimming space. The draft is unbelievable. I plan on starting in the same place again but will factor in the current. I'm not fast but finished in 1:18:xx. Gonna be fun! Duane

Regular 78 Erie, Colorado | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Did the race 4 years ago. Seeded myself to the right for the initital swim out and had pretty clear water. Yes I did not have a draft but I also didnt get hit, kicked, or pushed under. After the first turn I slid in and got in the draft. Still stayed a little to the right, never had any issues, and still emjoyed the draft. Swam it in 1:17 and I am not a good swimmer.
Have a great race.

Just to have an idea on to what to expect, what is your pool time for that distance? I just swam 2.4 m at the pool in 1:18 (h:mm), so wondering what to expect at IMFL swim.

You will probably be close to that. Gosh I'm not sure in a pool anymore. Maybe 1:15ish right now? I'm a few seconds per 100 faster in a pool My swim times Do not underestimate the draft. Before my first I aksed my coach about it and he said "It HUGE. At small venues like Lke Placid there is a whirlpool that develops in the lake during the swim" at IFML its MUCH more on the first lap than the second for sure. You will get contact but its not that bad and its not malicious or intentional. You will get hit and you will hit others. Think about it this way...yes there are 3000 people starting at the same tim ebut only so many of them will be in you vacinity so its really no worse than an average swim start as far as contact goes. Its actually quite fun |

Anyone know how far Gulfcrest is from Boardwalk. Is it an easy walk? Gulf Crest is about a mile from the start/finish line and was my choice if I wasn't staying at the Boardwalk. The rooms are gorgeous, heated swimmming pool, enclosed parking garage, two hot tubs and right there on the run course so your suport system doens't have to travel to watch you throughout the run. It's is within real close walking distance of Wendy's , Mellow Mushroom and a gas station for things that might pop up on race day. Actually - it's a little closer to 3/4 of a mile:

Veteran 209 Windermere, FL | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread So I'm not real sure how I'm going to get in my last brick before leaving for IM. It's CRAZY windy here because of the hurricane. At least I know I can get in a run...slow and possibly all over the place, but I won't get hurt like I could on the bike. Hoping the water is calm and there is no wind in 8 days! |

Veteran 494 Berkley | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Basically 1 week to go. My tapering has been going great. Short runs and bikes. Only 1 pool session though Tapering couldn't have come at a better time, my work schedule was switched this week to second shift so I miss my afternoon workouts. I've come to the realization that I am as prepared as I can be for the race and I will just give it my all once it comes. It has really been a load off the shoulders knowing that I'm as prepared as I could be and I can't stress about "what if I trained more" scenarios.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and safe travels. I look forward to swimming with everyone on Friday, you guys rock and have been a great inspiration and motivation for me.

Member 50 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread like there isn't enough to worry about...this hurricane on the east coast has really bad timing. I'm in Philly, right in line of where they think it might hit. My parents are heading down w/ my gear early b/c of it and I'm hoping flight delays/cancellations are ironed out by Wed. The bigger problem, can't leave the house until we know we're in the clear from flooding/power outages. I know no one can fix this, but I had to vent some place. I'm a little stressed... |

I'm a bit faster in the pool, but not much. I took it easy because I had a long day ahead. On the way out you have your head out of the water a lot. enjoy, Duane |

NY here...yup, storm is probably going to be bad. If it's as bad as 'they' say it may be, then I have to imagine that flights up and down the east coast, especially in the NY-Philly-DC corridor, will be cancelled or massively delayed for days as the system gets back to normal. Heck, flights are usually delayed in our area on a good day, but fingers crossed. Contingency plan...road trip. Not my preferred route to get down there, but a distinct possibility. Or perhaps leaving on Monday, unless the flights are already booked. Last minute storm certainly a PITA. |

How much of a real danger is flooding where you live? Personally I would leave if I could and the house could be damned as long as my animals were in a safe place. Really you can't control the weather so take a deep breath. I live in the Ft. Lauderdale area and we had clouds and rain the last few days and some wind but really were realatively uneffected. Certainly the storm will change dramatically over the next few days as it head outover the ocean but if Ihave learned nothing living in FL its that the storms a REALLY unpredictable and there is alomst alwasy WAY more doom and gloom on the forcast than actually occurs. Hope it all works out and amy you make it to the start safe and sound |
