Not as long as Texas stays in a drought, all the snow in the upper Midwest breaks all those beards, and China has their worst winter in 28 years! I predict a bumper crop and rising fortunes for the Kansans!!!

How's that for over exuberance over wheat futures?

Wow you guys are on a roll tonight!

I've been feeling so blah all week. I wish I would just get sick or get over this muck... Know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean! It's the mid winter blahs! I think you should go to Key West for rest and recuperation!

Ha!

I will be home a week from Weds, Miami, Jupiter, then Orlando (Disney) for a few days, then back to Jupiter. Great times. Lots of time with my lovely and my kiddos. I think I'm suffering from a hug deficiency...

I meant the question was stupid...

How does a cop become a detective? If you're a detective and you make Sergeant, do you have to leave the job you were in?

You can put in for an opening as a detective if someone leaves the unit or you can get promoted to detective. Then if you're promoted to Sergeant the department can leave you in the detective unit or put you in any unit they (command staff) choose. So sometimes getting Sergeant means you get a much worse shift or assignment. Its risky.

That's what I thought. I'm watching the Wire again and I was wondering why being Sergeant put you ahead of better police. I guess if you wanna keep doing what you do, you stay in your regular position. If you get promoted, you may have to move to a crap unit or shift. Bizarre if you ask me.

It is weird. Thats why I think alot of really good cops I know don't want to or have any desire to get promoted. Its a huge gamble and if you like day shift you could get stuck on nights for years.

My knee and my calf are a little sore and not in good way.  I have been racking up a string of days in a row and ego is getting in the way of resting. I probably could swim today but won't.  We are in Cleveland, TN. Lap swim times at the Cleveland Y are 5:30 am to 7:30 am which I have already missed and 12 pm to 1 pm. I probably will be busy then.  Also, it costs $10 for an out-of-town visitor pass which I just think is too high.

How is TAN today?

Are you a member of your local YMCA?  If so, ask them if you present your out of town card if they will discount or give you a free pass.  When I worked at a YMCA, we could allow "x" amount of out of town passes per person if they showed another YMCA card.  Some we could discount and others were free.  I don't remember the reasons for two different costs.  Each YMCA is a little different in how they handle that.  I found that out in different town in the same state and some that were in the same town and the same "management", but different locations.

I'm not a member of another Y. This one is the only one I could ever use. It's odd. My wife gave the Y $100K for their new building because it is good for the community but I won't give them $10 to swim because it seems like too much.

I understand completely.  I think our small YMCA rates went up again by over 3%, and the daily went up for adults to $10.00 for a day pass.  It seems to me to be extremely high, but some people stay for four hours and lift weights, run, swim, hot tub, shoot baskets, shower before getting into the pool, before getting into the hot tub and then before they leave.  Laughing  Worth the $10.00 in energy and water usage.  Others want to swim and leave.  But, how do you know which person is going to do what thing.

When I first got to Austin, I bought a book of 1 day passes for a fancy schmancy gym here in town where the rich and famous workout.  The passes were $15 a piece when you buy 10.  I still haven't used all of them. But I just use them for the spin classes which are really good.

I think the punch-card/10-pass concept is one of the best for the consumer because you see those things and say "I really need to go workout.  I bought all these things!"

If you get a full membership, you already paid the money but you don't have a concrete reminder to go workout.

Just my opinion.

As for energy usage... Why in the heck have we not hooked-up rowing machines, stairmasters, spin bikes, etc to generate power for the gym?

Seems a class full of spinners pushing ~200 W for an hour spin class, that could be some really solid net-metering!  The industrial strength solar panels are 300 Watt panels.  That means in one hour, you can produce almost as much as a solar panel.  Think about it...

There was an article a few years ago about taking the energy from the spin bikes and elliptical machines and help with energy costs for the gym.

I think it's just a case of the gym owners not understanding the cost/benefit of paying a little more for a bike that could feed power back to the gym.

Actually, I did the math... and it don't look good.  Maybe the gym guys are smarter than we thought...

Assuming 10 cents per kW which is roughly what people pay for power.

Assuming the average spinner generates 200 watthours in a class.

Assuming the average class has 10 people.

That means each class will produce about 2000 watthours or 2 kilowatthours.  So in one class, you only save $0.20.

Now assume you have 3 classes a day, that's only $0.60 per day.  It'll take you about 2 years to pay for the alternator on one bike.

Enough math for TAN for one day...
