When it comes to cycling, there's really two ways about it: (a) find a group and ride, or (b) hit the trainer. Trainer Road is a great way to approximate training with power (or you can train by heartrate), and they have an 11 week novice century plan that runs about 6 hours per week. It's only $10 per month, and all you need is (1) a supported trainer, (2) a speed and cadence sensor, and (3) a USB ANT sensor. Since you already have a 910xt, all you might be missing is the speed/cadence sensor, which is like $35 from Amazon. You could run the 11-week program twice, or do the novice century and then jump to intermediate base plan I. Go for it, and enjoy the ride! |

I would love to tackle a 100 miler next year prior to IM. That has to be a great confidence booster going into a 112 mile ride! Find a plan and go for it. you can do anything in 5 months! |

Played my first hockey game on Sunday night. Man, a totally different set of muscles. Signed up for the whole season this year not just a spare, so it will be a weekly thing! Watched the Tour of Alberta last night! Man those guys can fly! Amazing! It is neat having cyclists who have competed at the tour de france here. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed I got my run in today. The dynamic stretching that my coach has me doing prior to the run really is challenging for me. It makes me think that perhaps part of the reason why i get injured early in the season as opposed to later in the season is because these sub muscle groups take time to build when they are not being directly worked on but that they get stronger as the season goes along. Hopefully the pains in the knees will go away as I continue to do the exercises. Ive got a sprint this weekend is anyone else racing? |

Soooo last Saturday I did a local sprint tri. I was really nervous because I hadn't trained for two months. I ran three times prior to the race and suffered the sciatic pain something awful after my 3 mile run/walk. My leg hurt so bad the day before that I could not even sit at work I had to stand. Husband asked, as I was wiping the dust off my bike, if I should do this race since I was ill prepared, injured and would be taking a risk of further injury. This was something that needed to be done. I needed to know my true grt, that I had not been beaten by injury, and to not let fear stop me. Despite wanting to take the path of least resistance I assured him i would stop if the pain was "wrong" and would call him. So the goal was just to finish, no expectations, and race with a pleasant face blah blah blah. Happy to report, though I had some pain I had no major issues during the race. Took a little time to stretch in T2, I had to keep my bike in an easy spin gear because pushing did cause pain in my glute/sciatic spot. I of course had noooo endurance on the run and walked a lot! I did not find out my time because I had to head to Lake Tahoe for a retreat for our U of Nevada ambassadors. The cold water of the Lake felt amazing on my legs by the way. Before heading to the Lake I stuck around long enough to hear the places for my age group. I did not place but I hadn't really expected to. I was disappointed because the third place winner in my age group finished with a time that was 13 minutes longer than my time from last year. Damn! I really added over 13 mins to my time? Well it took me a week to get the courage to look at my exact time. Come to find out I took 2nd in my age group. i actually did all the events faster but because I took the time to stretch my T2 was longer! Yeah! I only added 4 mins to my time from last year! I feel so much better! Oh and sorry i haven't been logging or on here...Students moved into the dorm last week and i had parents at my desk crying, on the phone yelling and everything in between! I am fried and fried. Also, I found a running group in my town Whooo hoo! Sciatic pain is still there I am just building slowly...but not as slowly as i thought. Proud of you for even stepping on the starting line of the race, then having the grit and guts to go through and finish. You should be proud of yourself. As someone who's been in many positions where people whine and cry and yell at me, You have way more patience than I do. What's next? any racing/training left for the year, or do you just go to maintenance, or do you take time off hoping for healing with you nerve? I have an OLY in three weeks...ran almost 10 miles the other day .....well honestly ran 6 walked 4....and I am training with a group on Tue & Thur doing running and core work...kicks my butt each time! So glad to "see" you again on here. |

Hope we can support you in your quest and look forward to conversing over the fine beers of the world. Originally posted by Qua17 PS - I invited someone to join our group. She is from Sweden (think of all the beers she could suggest) and she is training for a sprint in order to raise money for charity. Hope y'all don't mind. Hi! Thanks for the invite! My name is Nat, short for Nathalie. I live in Sweden but am originally from France and part of my heart is still in England where I lived for 8 years. Family: a husband (sort of, not married... Yet) and a 9 year old son. We're getting a cat soon and a dog is on the cards in a couple of years My story: done sports all my life but ones involving balls (soccer, european handball) or martial arts. Had to give up those games due to a bad knee. Not enough stability in it and I don't want to go through a big operation. So I have to choose less violent sports. Triathlon seemed like a good idea. Qua mentionned that I am raising money for charity. Getting people to sponsor me for my race is a great way to make sure I go through with it. I have already 8 sponsors on my page, including some very good friends I don't want to let down. At the same time I am helping a cause I believe in. It's a win win situation. It's the 3rd time I do this (first 2 times were a 10k race and golf tournament). Training: well, not so much at the moment. Had this idea about a month ago and did too much too soon and hurt myself. Hopefully it's nothing but I am getting it checked before I start again. Much slower this time, the race is in May next year, so plenty of time. Beer: nothing beats a nice cold lager on a hot summer evening. Carlsberg is my favourite. That's it for now, looking forward to exchanging with you! Welcome Nat! |

I did a 62 miler this spring with friends having never ridden more than 30 miles before. I sure would have needed some more training to go another 40 :-) |

Extreme Veteran 968 Cape Coral, FL | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed I am wondering if any of you have tried Heed or Cytomax or both? I am getting rid of my Accelerade since my son has severe allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish and it contains them. It's just not worth the risk to have it in the house anymore. I saw that both Heed and Cytomax are safe for him and before I pick up a jug with a million servings I would find out if anyone has used either. I'm not to concerned about taste unless it is unpalatable since I can choke down some real nasty stuff anyways Just mainly looking at performance during the workouts and if they can be used for recovery as well. |

No better way to get out and get a good workout. + the beer tastes pretty sweet after a hard skate. It figures Canadians would've already started their leagues. Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed First - the confession - I blew off a bike ride today. I su@k. Second - the reason... A friend came over and we smoked a ton of meat. Salmon and wild boar that my friend's wife shot. B@dass. What a fun way to spend the day. The boar tasted like beer brisket but with texture of pork. The amount of beer that has been consumed today has been epic. Now I am watching the Broncos/Ravens game. I was trying to decide which team I hate more. Both teams have caused me so much pain. It has taken me the first half to decide. I hate the Ravens more. The entire town is a bunch of hypocrits. Oh, how could indianapolis steal our team. Oh wait... We can take Cleveland's. Oh, never mind. |

I use Cytomax, since you're not concerned with flavor you'll like (it not as sweet as gatorade, even if its concentrated) I usually water it down. Unfortunately Cytomax is not for recovery, it's meant to be taken pre or during workouts, I mainly used during my bike rides it can keep me hydrated for a good 40+ mile rides on two bottles. As far as recovery I use FLUID, I mix it with non-fat milk or almond milk, I've tried it with water but I had a hard time chugging it down. I hope this helps! Edited by ockeme3 2013-09-05 11:28 PM |
