Meulen - 2010-05-27 7:52 AM I wanted to ask you guys about recovery drinks. Currently, I just it a cliff bar after workouts. Would I see a significant benefit from a recovery drink? What are you guys using? Are there options out there for us natural/organic freeks? Do you use them after every workout, or just hard efforts?

Personally, I have a chocolate milk usually after working out.  No real reason other than I like it, and I read somewhere that it was a good post workout drink having some sugar and proteins.  That's as much science as I know about it. Sealed

Hehe...I'm on a posting spree today.

I like to drink coconut water as a recovery drink. It has all the electrolytes that Gatorade has, but it's all natural and with no sugars added. And it tastes soooooo good. You can get it at health food stores. I just ordered a case yesterday.

I'm glad you asked this question because I was going to ask everyone's advice about hydration/nutrition during a 30 mile bike ride. I have one coming up this Saturday (knee permitting), and I'd like to know how often and how much I should hydrate, and what with? Also, what about nutrition? I'm thinking the ride will take me about 2 - 2.5 hours, depending on hills/wind/heat, etc.

For 2 hour rides I make sure I'm fully hydrated and fed before hand. If it's quite some time since your last meal I'll either eat a power bar 45 minutes before the ride or do a gel within 15 minutes of ride time. I'll drink between 12-24 oz of water on the ride depending on outside temps and how hard I'm sweating. I'll have a gel with me, but won't take it unless I feel sluggish after an hour. I won't do any kind of electrolyte replacement unless I go more than 2 hours. This is what I do, but everyone is different. It takes some time to come up with your own perfect routine.

I use Endurox R4 and chocolate milk.  I DO notice significantly less DOMS w the R4, and chocolate slam is just fackin awesome after a tough workout and has just a good 3:1 ratio of protein:carbs and a little fat as well.  I drink something after every workout.  Not sure what you would use AFA natural/organic ingredients unless you threw some spirulina in milk which would probably make you puke from the taste.  Goggle it, Google will know

I'm trying to find some of this for my smoothies!  Did you order it online?  I can't find it locally anywhere (big surprise).

x2.   1 gel and 1 bottle of water is enough for that distance.   I take 2 bottles on my 20-30 mile rides and I always come back w/ 1 full bottle and part of the 2nd full also.

I'm not gung ho perfect on the organic diet plan. I just try to do my best to consume natural fuel. I'd be more concerned if the drink I chose had high fructose corn syrup in it and I drank that every day. I think Endurox R4 contains all natural ingredients. I'm not 100%, but if that's true it might be an option. I bet I could get an organic Chocolate milk at whole foods. I like that suggestion, I'll have to check into this. Maybe, the chocolate milk on normal workouts and R4 after the hard days.

I just signed up for a 70 mile group ride for saturday morning. I'm told to expect 20mph avg. I'm sooooooooo gonna get dropped!! LOL

I get my coconut water from a local health food store. You can also always get it at Whole Foods. Where do you live? I'm sure that you can order it online. I'll PM you with the brand name as soon as mine comes in. You could probably call the company and buy it directly from them if you're willing to buy in bulk. I always throw a few cartons in the ice chest when we're out boating or camping, also. It has electrolytes, carbs, and a tiny bit of fat - but it's the healthy kind of fat. Perfect for smoothies and rehydration.

I use Hammer products exlusively.  Afterwards, I drink Recoverite immediately after training (over two hours) and races.

I like their gels, and I think it's them that do the all natural recovery. Not Endurox like I originally thought.

thanks

I've decided to do the sprint on Saturday instead of the Oly on sunday.  My daughter (8yo) is doing the kids tri (along with a cousin, I think) on Sunday, so I'll be there Sunday also for sure.  We are staying in a motel in Galt, about 10 minutes or so from the race site.  Is that the race you are thinking of doing?  If so, we definately have to hook up!

Yep.  Let's meet up for sure.  I'll be driving up in the morning.

Short distances like this I pretty much go hydration only.  16-24 ounces of water per hour.  So, probably two bottles would suffice.  Also, I might dilute some gel to consume on the half hour with electrolyte supplement on the hour if it is warm to hot.

Yes.  To my knowledge, all Hammer products come from certified organic sources.

It's going to be 90 degrees, very humid, and I sweat like a beast. I mean....I sweat more than most men do. So....I guess I should plan on two bottles of water and a small bottle of diluted gel? Should that take care of hydration/nutrition and electrolyte supplementation?

Yep!  That's me

No, seriously, I have had the best success with Hammer.  I think I mentioned this before, but I have a very delicate GI system, especially when exercising.  So, I spent a lot of time and experimentation to get my nutrition plan correct for me.

So, with these conditions, I would mix one bottle with a complex carbohydrate-electrolye solution and have the other bottle with clean water.  Specifically, in my snobby opinion , I would mix one bottle with HEED, one bottle plain water, one flask with 4 ounces gel diluted with two ounces of water, and 4 to 6 Endurolytes.
