Morning!  1600 yd. swim this morning where I mostly did drills.  I was super excited to swim back and fly!  I actually liked this swim a lot because there were so many different elements to it.  I was supposed to lift after, but I forgot a sports bra.  I'll have to make it up later this week.  I am feeling so strong in the water.  Something must have really clicked over the last 3 months, because I've improved.  Now to fix this run....

I was thinking of getting the metronome app on my iphone and using it for running.  I think it would help with my overstriding issue.  Has anyone used a metronome to help with running cadence?

The biggest thing that will help with over striding is running up hills.  Its almost impossible to over stride because the angle of grade esentially "reaches up" and catches your foot before you can over stride.

I had this issue which was part of the cause of my ITBS.  I used a lot of visualization when I first started running again.  Visualizing your foot landing under your body instead of out in front.  I also found that with a proper "recovery" phase of your stride your foot will tend to land naturally under/slightly out in front of your body.

Do I really need to rent race wheels?  Can't I use the ones on my bike (or am I a fool for even considering it)?

You know you can just wear your swim suit under your work out clothes . . . I've had to do that several times.

I had already taken it off, rinsed it, and showered off my body.  I have severe eczema and have to wash the chlorine off asap.  I will remember to do that if I ever forget my undergarments again though.  I can deal with being itchy if it's once in a while.

Thank you both for the feedback.  Visualization works really well.  Once I get distracted or tired, the foot starts landing out front again.  It's something I need to work on.  I'll pay more attention when I'm running hills next time.  I'm always too focused on getting to the top v. where my foot is landing.

There is no need to rent race wheels (and I wouldn't rent race wheels if you've never ridden on them before).

Wow a good day for swims it seems. I had 1600 with drills and it is starting to click with this early vertical forearm! It has made my shoulder feel a lot better as well. I had a little break after the swim then got my ZR bike in with some OLP. Best OLP I have had to date. It is really smoothing out, althought the last couple I was getting fatigued.

Jen, a heads up on race wheels for our bikes. There is some small modifications/adjustments that have to be made for the newer rear zipps and others to fit. Some people said they have to shave the brake pads a little.

Don't shave the pads. Widen the calipers.  It's not hard.

luv2bhealthy - 2013-01-27 5:51 PM 20 mile bike ride and a 5k run! It is nice today. Overcast, but humid, in the 70s with 13 mph winds. Made the bike ride interesting.

Did ya check out the new pool?

Not yet.  That is next on the agenda.  I needed to make sure I was ready for the biathon this Saturday since I am doing a 10k and a 30 mile ride especially since I've been sick.

kidtri33 - 2013-01-28 12:20 PM Kelly may I ask why? I was considering it for my races this year. Is it something you have to get used to?

Deeper wheels can be diffilcut to handle in the wind and on steep descents (especially if you are a lighter rider).  If you rent race wheels on-site and have never used them before, it can be difficult to adapt to handling them.  If you want to rent race wheels, I would do so from a company that rents them out for longer periods of time and do some training with them rather than just take them out on race day.  The other thing to consider is that the aero advantage from race wheels is relatively small -- about the same amount of advantage that come from wearing an aero helmet.  I wouldn't give up comfort and knowledge about how my bike handles for the advantage that may be conveyed by race wheels.

Which is another reason why renting race wheels can be tricky.  You don't want to be making adjustments the day before the race if you don't have to.  I also don't like the idea of breaking up a chain and cassette pair the day before a race.

Yea I think this was mentioned as well. I will have to find the article. They were against that as well but the guy was getting the put on race morning and that was the quickest thing they did. I believe they did eventually widen the calipers but I don't remember. I was looking at it after the LBS told me when I was buying the bike.

Alot of places up here have a 30-day introductory fee for unlimited classes for about $30. Otherwise I am seeing groupons as well.  They are not cheap if you don't have a deal of some sort ... about $17/class.

I rented for all three ironmans, and had no issues. RaceDayWheels is awesome! For Louisville & Wisconsin they swapped everything out & adjusted the brakes the day before on site. The only minor issue I had was at Wisconsin, the brakes were squeaking like crazy! So I had my husband swap out to special brake pads (yellow) and all was good. For Vineman I also rented from RDW, but they were not onsight so I have them shipped to my brothers in No Cal, and had a friend swap everything out. I went with 404's front/rear for Louisville & Wisconsin, never felt any different riding except for the cool zipp sound them make. For Vineman I went with 808's front/rear, only once did I feel wind pulling me. (But I'm not 110 pounds either.)

I doubt I saved much time with them, but I sure felt like I was fast!Wink

Thanks!  Whatever this stuff is, it's not going quietly!  I am mostly recovered.  I just know I am not 100% yet.  Still experiencing some nausea throughout the day.  But yeah, I am excited because it's the start of my race season.  The Hot Chocolate 15k is the following Saturday.

Anyone have issues with their Garmin or whatever in the pool? I used it for the 1st time tonight and it did not accurately read distances....it gave me more distance. For example, I did a set of 5x100 and it read 125, 150, 125. The other distances were correct.

Karen - toys are fun. What exactly is a powertap?
