Hey there everybody! Sorry I haven't been keeping up with the MG lately. After being sick last week I got sidetracked. I hope all is well with everyone.

I put up a little poll in the main tri forum to help me figure out which bike to take on my upcoming vacation and first tri of the year.

Good morning!!!
First Saturday that I can sleep in since the first of the year and I was up at 6:20.   Decided to make the best of it while the rest of the house was in a good slumber.  Did 30 min on the bike and a 30 min run on the treadmill.  Felt strong.
I'm in charge of a ski/snowboard fundraiser tonight.  Looking at about 80 participants for the competition.  It's going to be a busy day.
Enjoy the weekend.
Kelly

Hopefully Helen is somewhere in blissful sleep!

As for me...I am also working this weekend! I got a 4 mile run in today. I took a trail which was still covered with snow and ice. I keep thinking its getting warmer. needless to day I ended up wogging alot of my run. Its supposed to be 40's here today. I am going to attempt an outdoor bike today before work. Hopefully I wont be too much of a popsicle.

Have fun this weekend.
Hope you raise lots of $$$ Kelly!!!!

Oh ... Lisa... safe travels in the coming week. Hope all is well. As for the bike... take the bike that you're most comfortable with. It's a long season... no need to get hurt on the first tri.

x2 what Kevin said Lisa!!! Comfort is key on the bike. Glad you are feeling better

How is everyone? Missed you all this week!!!

Hardly got any workouts in this weeek, but race on Sunday was awesome! Had a great time.

What's on everyone's agenda this week?

Question: why is it that I don't enjoy at all doing my short runs(2, 3 miles) and will skip them but i love, love, love my long runs(6-9 miles) and will hardly ever skip them. Same thing with bike. love my 70 milers, don't enjoy my 20 milers as much.

Whether or not I enjoy a run seems to have to do with other factors in my life, not the distance.  If I'm feeling down, I won't have a good run and I won't enjoy it much, regardless of distance.  If my performance is poor, I don't enjoy it.  That is my experience.  Lately, I'm having trouble getting up for the run.  I don't know why.  It's easy for me to just bag it and say, "tomorrow".

Hmmm...........I can't say I feel the same way. I adore every run I get out there for. To me the prospect of a quick 30 min run is awesome. Gets me out into the fresh air and never ever fails to make me happy.

Now having said that I used to really love my long runs as well. But right now I am increasing my run mileage by trying to incorporate a steady diet of frequent short runs. There is something to be said for frequency and consistency .......

But we are all different in what we enjoy and what we do not really care for, so its all good. As long as you do not allow your distaste for a certain workout to give you an excuse to SKIP the workout. Again CONSISTENCY.

Think about your training like this: its all pennies in a jar. Day in day out, week in week out, year in year out......this is how we become fit. Slowly over time with consistency.

Make sense?

Interesting.
Duane have you tried running "naked"? Take the Garmin out of the equation? The watch?

When my asthma is outta control.....which is unfortunately not an infrequent occurrence, my runs tank. I simply lose ALL my run speed . Not that I ever really HAD any run speed to start with but you know what i mean. So I run along, gasping, chest heavy staring at the Garmin WILLING the numbers to be different than what they are. Horrid.
It simply makes me angry .....and sucks all the joy out of the run for me.

I now know that for me a much better approach is to run without any external data about what is actually transpiring during the run. Either Garmin free......and just use GMaps after to get the dustance. Or by running with the Garmin but covering the display.
Then when I get home I get to peek and see what happened during the run.
This may not work for everybody, but for me its been very helpful.

Just a thought.

OK then. So now with two days of night shifts under my belt I am going out to run.
And you can BET that two days of no sleep and CRAPPY nutrition will perhaps negatively affect my performance. Duh.

Oh well..........

Quick question for you all - I am to do "long hills" tomorrow.  I live about 1.1 miles from an overpass - thought I'd bike there, do my hills and bike back.  My hills are supposed to be .25 mile long, but these aren't that long.  I'm pushed for time in the a.m. and I know if I don't do it in the morning it won't get done.  What do you think?  good plan?

I meant to ask this earlier.  I seem to have a strange stride/gait since I've slowed my pace and started longer runs.  My left foot, and only my left foot, seems to strike the ground "flat" - meaning not heel first, not toe first, just, flat.  This seems to cause my shin muscle to get a work out.  I really noticed it yesterday later in the run and I couldn't seem to change the strike unless I sped up.  Right leg does nothing different.  My only known trauma to that leg was knee surgery 25 years ago (artho, had a chipped kneecap)  I sound like a lopsided horse going down the road.  Thoughts, comments, suggestions?  Don't worry about it, run faster?

I don't think it is so much the time involved in getting ready or even any outside factors like a bad day. I feel like I don't get in my groove in such a short distance or i feel like I am just getting warmed up and the run is done. Maybe I am not getting the runner high that I enjoy so much during and after my long run. Who knows. I will just have to make myself do it. Thanks for the input!

Morning Rebecca... we've missed your beeming sunshine too. I hope work is not getting you too stressed. Try to get those workouts in... even a short 40 minutes is preferrable to nothing... it really helps to reduce the stress and clear the head.

As for your question... I'm getting that now too. I believe it's that we don't feel it's a good use of our time. Let me explain.... a 2-3 mile run takes between 20-40 minutes... getting ready and cleaning up takes X amount of time (for me 10 minutes prep ....depending on how cold... then 10+ minute cool down ...again depends on temps.... and shower/change). That X amount of time doesn't change with the length of the run... so going out for a nine miler feels like a better use of our time since you have more time running then you do spent preparing.

The same goes for the cycling... and swimming. We have to realize that ALL workouts are important and the body needs lighter/shorter workouts to properly aclimate to exercise. You are far less likely to get injuries by following these plans... they ARE time tested and should be followed as best you can.

Of course... this is my experience and I'm open for other's interpretations. Helen, Marianne... what say ye?!

Wow Duane...i have experienced EXACTLY the same thing as this. Happens on my left leg as well. Clop clop clop....you CAN hear it. I have figured out for me what causes it is kind of a super tight muscle in the shin area...........and when I really work on it with the Stick it settles down. It is NOT a shin splint...I do not really have any pain until I use the Stick on my shin then I realize how tight it is.
Let me know how this goes ok?
