My oldest son competed in a little three lap, small bmx style track race.  He took another boy in the last turn for his 1st place finish.  I wish he could tell me how to make it to the podium.  I've been shut out so far this year.

Too cool for your son!

brick94513 - 2010-04-18 9:52 AM Its been one crazy weekend.  Three days in Monterey, then race on Saturday morning, finish and immediatly leave to get my oldest son home for two baseball games.  Hmmm... being sedetary for two hours in a car after racing, not so good!  Another baseball game today and my middle son has tryouts for his AG baseball all-stars team.

Race performance was less than stellar, but we had a great time.  I'm going to try and get a race report and pictures up in a little bit.

Sorry to hear the race didn't go as planned...but having fun is what this is all about right??

just finished reading...sucks to be stuck behind slower riders, I was asked to hold back on my ride on Sat...which I didn't mind but it was so windy I just wanted to be done and she was giving it her all! There was a point I thought to myself "can't you peddle just a little faster???" But all in all it was a good HTFU! for me!

brick94513 - 2010-04-19 8:42 AM Morning everyone!  Not really sure what I'm going to do for training today.  I need to get some stuff done around the house too.  It never ends.  Why does life have to interfere with my training? Yell

On a fun note, my wife and I are doing a hydrostatic body fat analysis this morning.  She's doing it as a measure of her new eating regime, so I thought I would join out of curiosity.  I'll report back on the process and MY results. Laughing

I so wish I could do this!

Thats just one of those inherent parts of MTB racing.  It sucks, but there's nothing you can do about it.  Normally, I use the time to rest, get my HR down, fuel, and hydrate.  But with the broken front derailleur, I wasn't able to get into the right gear for the pace and wasn't able to get comfortable.  It cost me later for sure.

Happy Monday, A-Team,
Another workout-less weekend.  Mulch, softball, mulch, soccer, mulch, cut lawn, softball, mulch, collapse.  I'm sore over every inch of my body, but still have a big blank spot in my training logs.  Off to the Y at lunchtime to get in a run.  I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend.

So here's an update that might make you feel a little better about how the team is doing.  I just compared the team standings and we're not losing on all the goals. Team B has us on goal 1 but not by much. There are probably a few that haven't updated the spreadsheet for the weekend so there is still a chance we may take the lead on this by the time everyone is done updating things. Team B isn't so lucky on goal 2, we have them by about 1%. Goals 3 and 4 are where we are falling behind.  They have us by 2% on goal three and a whopping 8.9% on goal 4. I know I have some work to do on goal 4.  Let's try to focus a little more and bring up the stats.  And on a positive note, we are kickin' tail on the important challenge (posting).  There's no contest. We have 70 pages, they have 18. Way to go A team!
            A team - Team B
Goal 1 - 38.9% - 40.2%
Goal 2 - 44.2% - 43.3%
Goal 3 - 51.0% - 53.0%
Goal 4 - 37.1% - 46.0%
Overall - 43.2% - 44.6%

brick94513 - 2010-04-18 12:29 PM Alright folks, I think I'm caught up around here and spreadsheet is up-to-date.  Good news is I put my training in after Dee posted those results.  But, darn, I'm running behind on my goals this month.

I did an unoffical race report in my blog if you want to check it out.

Pics to come.

Hehe...  I had the exact same thought!

x3-That little trip threw my training off. I've got some work to do to catch up but I should be able to do it.

Congrats to your boy! The podium isn't even a possibility for me at this point.  My plan to make it to the podium is to hold out until I'm the only one (or one of three) in my AG. For now my goal is to finish in the top half of my AG and that will take some work. I was 100/132 in Saturday's half mary.

mndymond - 2010-04-18 10:02 PM So I have pretty much zero idea whats going on with the A team right now! Sorry guys, dropped the ball...we will just say I've been training hard? Haha

I'm almost done my run goal with 2 weeks left...who would have thought...biking over 60%, swimming just under 50% and core/stretching over 60%...I think I'm at about 68% or something...

swim, bike and run on tap for tomorrow I think! swim, run in the morning and short bike at night!

Good job staying on top of you goals.  I wish I was as close to where I should be on my goals at this point in the month.

I'm a half slacker?  I should end up over my swim goal when all is said and done.  I'm a little behind on my bike and runs, but will catch up on the bike tonight.  I should make my run goal in the end too.  I'm definitely slacking on goal #4....  But I promise you, A-Team, that I will make progress on that TODAY!

I had a surprise when I came home Friday. My handicapped neighbor mowed my lawn and was just cleaning up when I pulled into the driveway. She is an amazing person. She is handicapped but still pushes herself to be as normal as possible. She had her foot crushed and it damaged the nerves so it feels like it is on fire.  Amputation or similar things don't help (I forget what the condition is called) she will basically be in pain for the rest of her life. Even a slight breeze against the skin increases the pain and yet she still puts on her shoes and socks (causing more pain) and goes out doing things for others when really we should be doing things to help her. No matter how bad things get, she still puts on a smile and moves forward looking for ways to help others.

Oy, I always fall behind with the posts on the weekend.  I think that means I'm a slacker at work, because usually I can keep up during the week Wink

Anyways, I just had time for a quick glance over the last few pages. . . Michelle - congrats on having your 2nd offer accepted.  Tim - cute pics of the kids racing!  Everyone else - congrats on being in the lead over the weekend!

I know from the standings it *looks* like I'm behind on my goals, but I'm actually not!  As long as I finish my marathon on Saturday, I'll be WAY over my run goal, even if I skip all the other runs I have planned.  I'm definitely planning on some pre-race relaxation with a yoga class or two this week, which will put me over the top for my 4th goal.  I'm planning on spending the week after my marathon biking and swimming, and I kept my goals for both of those pretty low, so they should definitely be doable!

Saturday was a busy day with the half mary in the morning and a wedding to help my wife cater in the afternoon/evening. Only had time for lunch and a shower before I had to leave again. The happy couple threw us a couple of surprises last minute so things were really busy. If they had told us sooner we would have had another helper so things wouldn't have been so hectic. Why is it that people always know better then the pro's? They wanted all this food but it was way more then was needed but they insisted.  As long as they are paying for it. We only used about a third or less of the food. Too bad it was too late to take it to the soup kitchen so they could use it to feed those in need.

I've been working on my race report but the web site is all messed up and the results are wrong so I will finish it up later and let you know when it is done so you can check it out if you want. The short story is that I started out strong but lost my groove when I stopped for a potty break and couldn't get back into things.  For the first two thirds of the race it looked like I would beat my goal by ten minutes but in the end I missed it by three. Definitely a race I want to do again next year. Not the most organized but a good way to check my conditioning at the beginning of the season.

It would be nice....  Some people get it and are courteous.  I think the only way around it will be to ride Cat 1 (semi-pro) next year.  Unfortunately, I'm would definately be a back-of-the-packer at that level.

Hydrostatic body fat calculation was pretty cool.  Imagine a large stainless steel bathtub.  The bottom is supported by cables and functions as the scale.  You lie prone in about 18" of water with a weight on your lower back.  You exhale, then put your head under water, and continue to exhale until you can't blow anymore bubbles.  They repeat the test three times, then use a calculation based on height, weight, and correction for dead space air in the lungs.  The test provides you with your lean muscle mass weight, body fat weight, percentage of body fat, and your resting metabolic rate in calorie expenditure.

My test results showed 7.2% body fat or 10.6 pounds of adipose tissue.  Resting metabolic rate is 1,832 calories.

I'm right there with you, Paul!  You and I will just have to work on the laws of attrition and just outlast everyone and race until we're in our 70's and 80's.  Being in the 40-44 age group, I'm amazed at how close people in that AG can get to winning the races I'm in.  My goal is always to finish in the top half of the overall field and the top half of my AG.

I enjoyed your writeup, Tim.  I realize you didn't get the results you wanted, but congratulations on getting everything you could out of the race.  I guess you can't yell, "ON YOUR LEFT!" when you're on a trail that's about 12 inches wide, huh? Wink
