i wish he'd wash my cats. they stink.

"washing cats" sounds like a euphemism for something else...

approx 70 days until everyone can find out the name of the baby...or maybe earlier since you are all manatees...just don't tell the DW

I would love to keep this thread alive as it has helped me in so many ways.  I also would love to start my own group too but I am not sure quite how to do so. It would help me a lot since I won't be training and racing as much with a newborn in the house.

Happy holidays everyone. I had off of work this week and visited family but back to the grind next week.

So, did everybody survive the holidays? Sheesh, can't believe I didn't post my Christmas card in here ... durrr ... sorry.

Everyone in my family is still alive and a little bit heavier, so all in all it cannot have been a bad holiday!

What is it about Christmas that makes everything and everyone fall apart.  I managed to break my toe (just the little one, no doctor's necessary and I'll be running again in a few days), my kid has intestinal worms and my little guy has his left eye crossing almost non-stop.  Now instead of a relaxing week at home with the hubs on vacation I'm running around to doctors and appointments.  Grrrrrr.

On the plus side, I got my entry fee for Racine from Santa, a Kindle which should be delivered any minute now and my third set of salad tongs in three years, all three courtesy of my crazy mother.  Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Serenity NOW!

Yes, I want serenity NOW!!!!!!!!!!! too

Glad I'm not the only one with a crazy mother.

The problem with holidays is that all the whackos get together and the resultant synergy creates a critical mass whereby everything on everyone explodes at once.

I sure hope you and your little piglet'uns heal soon!!!

See, when I first read the salad tongs part, I was thinking you must eat aLOT of salad to go through 3 pair in 3 years.  Then the Mother part sank in.  They do buy some random things sometimes.

Hope your kiddos recover quickly and you get to enjoy the DH and his vaca a little!

I'm not Alison's mother (oh dear could I be old enough???), but here's a guilt trip for her.  I don't have a single set of salad tongs?!?!  Does this mean my mother is sane?  Or I'm not worthy of tongs???  Darnit, need me some salad tongs here.  Har har.

Ha ha ha, my mom is hilarious. She's still so sweet. She will think I ought to have a cup of tea and will bring me one. Then she'll forget she brought me one, but the thought is still in her head (I think it went to autoloop), so she brings me another. Confused by the one there, she figures it's old and cold and wants to carry it away. But it's hot. So she shrugs and leaves it there.

Then, a couple of minutes later, the germ of the thought sprouts again ... I got up to six cups of tea once. Well, one can never be too hydrated. At least, if I'm not running a marathon or something.

That is too funny Yanti.  Although with a double post are you in autoloop as well?   Is it hereditary?!

Just finished registering for Racine 70.3. May God have mercy on my soul.

Ryan, I agree that Yanti's polyposting does seem reminiscent of her mother's tea fixation. Every year that passes brings me that much closer to becoming my mother so I've taken some precautions to avoid picking up the more annoying habits. I actually keep lists of everything I've bought everyone for Christmas and birthdays to avoid being a repeat gifter.

On that note, would anyone like what I consider to be a hideous bright yellow baking dish with some type of heron looking bird painted in the center? It's from France (thus cannot be returned) and only needs to be submerged in very cold water before the first use to avoid chemicals from the paint leeching into the food and poisoning your family.

The money from the rest of the returns will go towards a kick board and pull buoys.

Happy New Year to you too Lynn and to all of the other manatees!  Here is to health, happiness, and success in the new year!

Allison and I have started a new mentor group for 2011 but we have not been moved to the official page just yet.  But of course we will still linger around our original manatees as you have all inspired us this past year.

Happy New Year to my fellow Manatees!  Hope everyone's holidays were tolerable.  This is the first holiday in as many as I can remember that I didn't have to travel out of state.  It was nice to lay low and relax for awhile!

Hope everyone has a good outlook on 2011.  I love new years and chances for new starts

Since when is spending the first week of the new year sitting on the couch with no voice, a broken toe and an owwied Achilles because of over-extending myself an accomplishment?  Seriously though, I put my 35lb weight loss in there but if you think I have other accomplishments that are worth mentioning please tell me what they are.

Ryan, you should add in something about your blazing fast 2nd overall run place from the Chicago tri.  That's impressive.

I cannot relate to that in any way and therefore should probably withhold comment. HAHAHHAHAHA ...

You should play up the half-mary more. That's a big deal.

And RyRy should definitely toot his horn about 2x 2nd.

Hmm, maybe I should have written Ryan's bio and he should have done mine since we're apparently too modest My goal is to have more than 500 posts before our group goes live. I may be the only one, but I do judge the worthiness of advice given by other members partly on their post count. I'm shallow like that.

On a separate crazy note, I'm already considering my race plans for 2012 and looking at Ironman TX.  The IM brand may cost more but my brother lives on the north side of Houston so I could crash at his place and save myself $$$ on lodging which would offset the extra in registration.

So for Lynn and Yanti, how long did you ponder doing a full IM before you pulled the trigger and what kind of things did you, and should I, be taking into consideration?  I just want to work through it in my head over the next few months so that I know what I'm doing when registration opens.

not a bad idea. because ryan is the post initiator he can still change the content ... i have no modesty problem but i did rewrite lynn's a couple of times because she does.

do it do it do it! life is short.

how long did i ponder doing a full IM ... I don't know, I don't ponder much. I'm shallow like that ... I guess I'd done a bunch of marathons before and during tri life, and some long bikes, and knew I could pull off the swim no problem ... I started looking to an IM within a few weeks of finishing HIM and I signed up for my first (although to date i have not actually done one, but signed up and trained for three) ... later that year.

the main thing is your life, health, motivation, stability such that you can consistently train a minimum of 8 hrs/wk for 20-30 weeks? that is really it. if you can consistently do the training and toe the line, I hear the IM is easier than all that and almost anti-climactic!

also remember TX is hot, hot hot and humid, but there are ways to prepare for that.

Alison -- I never in a million years thought I'd sign up for an Ironman. I also never thought I'd do a marathon. It was not on "my list" and I had absolutely no desire. But now 3 marathons later, I love 'em in a sick and twisted sort of way.

I've done 2 HIM and an aquabike, which is the swim and bike portion of an IM without the run. Once I finshed that and knowing I"ve finished (with respectable times) a marathon I realized I have the mental fortitude and focus it must take to do a full one.

Most people from here in SOCAL go to AZ for their first IM. It didn't hold any fascination for me. I went and watched a couple of years ago and if anything it turned me off from doing an IM. So, I started searching for an IM that sparked something in me and that happened to be IM CDA Coeur d'Alene. I considered Texas but it is so hot and humid and I'm just not used to that here in CA. It would be harder to replicate the conditions I'd probably be racing in.

It was a bit like a leap off a cliff, but I have a friend/coach and the resources of my local tri club and of course BT and the full support of my family. I think the family aspect is super important. The heavy volume of training doesn't come until much closer to the race and it really only lasts a few weeks, but it's a very intense few weeks. I'm fortunate in that my DH just said, "tell me where and when I need to be."

I still think I'm a bit nutty for signing up, but watching people cross that finish line and knowing several people who've completed an IM, gave me a place to ask questions. If you pull the trigger, drink the koolaid, or whatever other metaphor you want to use, let me know and we can walk through it together.

Best of luck with your decision. And, when does your and Ryan's mentor group start up?

Lynn

oh and another thought for the would-be IMers ...

you'll need LACKTITUDE. Most of us, including me, have fortitude in droves. But when you're putting that much volume on yourself for so long, it's critical to know when to dial it back, to really make the easy workouts easy and the recovery weeks recovery, and to take breaks or adjust when you need to.

I am *terrible* at this and would say other than major life events, it is THE factor that has prevented me from completing IM training.

Allison, I think you learned this lesson well in prepping for your half-mary. It is, as I said, right up there with consistency.

Allison is right...maybe we are too modest. Allison what do you want me to add to yours? Break your modesty!
We are waiting in a queue for our turn to go "live" right now.
I am really really really wanting to do an 1/2 IM this year but I'll need to wait so I can devote time to baby and DW. So I will instead live vicariously though mini-piglets if we're chosen to become mentors.  Insteat maybe I'll set my sights on running a 1/2 mary or full mary this fall.  Although I'll be able to bike train easily this winter because my wife bought me an awesome bike trainer for xmas. She even did extensive research on it! I am so proud
