Anyone have issues with their Garmin or whatever in the pool? I used it for the 1st time tonight and it did not accurately read distances....it gave me more distance. For example, I did a set of 5x100 and it read 125, 150, 125. The other distances were correct.

Karen - toys are fun. What exactly is a powertap?

Powermeter.  It's hub based.

I have the timex global and I just turn the GPS off and use it to time laps. Now supposedly the 910 is better in the water than the timex but I couldn't tell you why.

I checked the Garmin support and the first reason it said for a discrepancy was "inexperienced lap swimmer." At the end it said that with improved technique, discrepancies will reduce.

Blame the novice. I feel shame.

For anyone interested in my Hot Yoga escapades ... I have a horrible heat intolerance and signed up for a very heat intensive race in mid-July.  I wanted to see if I could get my body to accliminate to heat.

I have done about 10-12 hot yoga classes over the last month.  It was very hard at first, either not being able to do the work or being so miserable with the heat I frequently had to sit down for breaks as I was near passing out from the heat.

I have found that I very much like the hot yoga (the sweating is very addicting).  I can do all the poses and get better each time I go.  While I still sweat a ton (depending on the class), I don't really feel the heat that much anymore. Fans during my workouts now actually make me a little bit cold.

I have found that this class has really helped to de-stress my very stressful life right now.  I find myslef calmed during and after class.  It is certainly helping with flexibility and has helped to eliminate small pains/sorenesses.  It has also really forced me to pay attention more to hydration given the intensity of the sweating.

Anyway ... happy Monday

Yay!.... as I have written here I am a fanatic for hot yoga. Yes totally agree with the de-stress.  I did it today.  Was thinking how I am already looking forward to being "post HIM" because all I am gonna do for 2 to3 weeks is hot yoga.

Maybe one day I'll get to try hot yoga! Sounds fun. I've tried regular yoga, but I am too impatient. It is hard for me to hold possess without getting antsy. On another note, has anyone ever worn two pair of bike shorts at a time - you know, double padding?

I have not, but it sounds like too much material with lots of chafing potential. I actually switched to tri shorts exclusively because I found them to be much more comfortable on long rides. Less material, just need to use lots of lube.

Kel wanted me to weigh in regarding bike trainers and fluctuations in speed over different types of trainers.

One of the reasons that I tell people to spend the extra money to get a fluid trainer versus a mag trainer is the reality of power output compared to outdoor.  A mag trainer renders a straight-line resistance curve while a fluid trainer renders a parabolic resistance curve.

The downside of that is when you go from riding a mag trainer to a fluid trainer, your speed will drop b/c you are used to pushing a set number of watts which, on the parabolic curve, relates to a lower speed output.  Don't worry about the speed output.  Just worry about the power you are putting out.  Just focus on the fact that your speed will increase over time and, with that increase, you are increasing your power output more than if you were using a mag trainer.

For the math geeks, here is the power formula:

y = 0.0115x3 - 0.0137x2 + 8.9788x
Where "y" is Power, and "x" is speed in MPH.

Wow ^^^^ that's quite a difference. I've seen the graphs for a specific trainer, but not the different types all stacked up together. Very interesting.

I switched from an old Cyclops fluid (probably original version) to KK Road Machine. So both are fluid, but I can feel a different with the two. Maybe it's all in my head.

Thank you for the explanation, Shaun.  It helps.  I just switched from a mag trainer to a fluid trainer and was floored by the change in resistance.  My little 2 hour ride was horrible.  I hope it becomes more natural quickly.

My 910 is almost always accurate.  I've had it skip a length if I did a lousy flip turn, and it doesn't count kick sets, but other than that it's been great.  I don't hit the lap button for rests, as I prefer to stop the watch and then hit lap.  I want to see my average pace per 100 as I'm doing my workout.

How long have you been swimming?  Do you swim masters or on your own?

Great explanation and chart Shaun! I didn't realize that it was that much different. Thanks for the math formula as well ha! Now I just need to sell the home gym and elliptical so I can get a new trainer.

It's a rest day for me.  I'm heading in for an EGD at 11.  No food or drinks until after surgery, and I'm already HUNGRY.  Not even allowed to have water though I may sneak some sips.   I have the worst luck with surgery scheduling (a noon gallbladder removal turned into 5 p.m.).

Rest day today! I have swim and run test this week. Not really looking forward to running 3x20mins, unless I was running it at high school speeds. Ahh the good ole days...

I have worn 2 pairs of shorts, it can help, but it also changes your position because it raises you up a little bit.  I have found that a thinner short, chamois cream and a good seat and fit will help a ton.  Any seat is gonna hurt a bit ... or be somewhat uncomfortable during long rides.

On another note ... I thought morning workouts were supposed to energize you.  I feel totally exhausted and could have easily fell asleep on the way to work.

On another note ... I cannot wait for my rest day on Friday ... just going at full tilt between work and trying to get workouts in.

Also, I am very proud of myself that I was doing flip turns again during my swim (haven't done them in along while, but open turns have been really stressing my shoulders).  I still really suck at them, and couldn't do them on my warm down cuz I ran into the guy on the kick board .  I will keep trying.

EKG? Good luck.

Glad to hear that you haven't had any problems with your 910. It was/is  likely due to, as the Garmin support website says, user form technique issue.

I have not been officially swimming for very long. I began taking lessons through a TRI swim class in OCT and have been doing it consistently since. I am slow but I think (according to numbers) I am progressing. I must say I am very impressed with your swimming totals/skills. How long have you been at it?

Most bike comfort issues have to do with position and needing to spend more time in the saddle.  If you think about it, riders who are on their bikes the longest (pro cyclists) have the smallest, hardest seats.  Get a good saddle, get fit for your bike and ride -- that's the best way to get comfortable on the bike.

50 minute run this morning.  My legs are still a little beat up from Sunday, but I trudged through.  Hour of Tabata intervals on the trainer for lunch.

We have a painter coming by to give us a quote on painting the inside of our house.  Something Cindy wants done before Quinn gets here.

Love the name. It's actually my sons name, short for Quinten.

Karen - congrats on the new toys.

Jen - please update us when you're back.

Chris - make sure your Garmin is set correctly for your length pool. Mine is always accurately inaccurate because my pool is so short, the garmin doesn't go that low for yardage. I always have to do a correction after my swim, but it is still good for lap times. I stopped wearing it in the pool because I think the salt water ruined my connections to charge it.  It was within warranty and they replaced it with a brand new one and now I don't swim with it.

Every trainer is different.  People get really hung up on how fast they are going on a trainer and there are no many variables (including the calibration on the trainer) that the numbers are pretty disconnected from reality on the road.

Yes, I do know this, of course.  It's just that I guess I got use to my old bike and acclimated to that seat.  Now I am starting all over with my new bike seat.  So...it's toughing it out again!  Yay!

Hi, group.

I felt drugged and drowsy after the surgery yesterday so didn't update (sry!).  The endoscopy confirmed Celiac.  There is extensive damage to the duodenum.  I will know more about that after the results of the biopsy come back.  I am so relieved to know what is going on with my body.  This explains so much.  I have been sick and fatigued my entire life with tons of GI distress.  I have been anemic off and on, vitamin d deficient off and on, and I lost half of the enamel on my teeth.  I ate so many wonderful, healthful foods, and my body wasn't absorbing all the good stuff from them.  Anyway, I am hoping that with the dietary changes I will begin to feel strong again.  It makes it a little harder to fuel for athletics, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.  GI doc suggested that I meet with a nutritionist to discuss my diet.  I want to find one who works with athletes.

I rode for the second time on my new trainer.  Still didn't feel natural  I think I may need to readjust my saddle because it's creating pressure in this one spot and then I get piriformis on that side.
