I am still finding it tough to get into things. My Oly is about a month away and HIM maybe 7 weeks. Hopefully I will find the love soon. Hamstring/glutes still telling me I am old. Foam rolling like a BOSS. Who knows. Great job with all the work you guys are doing! You are motivating. That is what I need. Unfortunately I am training for a race, slightly injured, that I don't really want to do. But I want to support my tri buddy who has supported me and not be a Nancy. Bobby - God knows - NO ONE wants to be a Nancy! I hear you about motivation - especially when you are doing things to help someone else. Try to tap into how good it felt to cross that finish line during your first HIM and see if that helps. Based on your logs - I know you are working out, so keep it up. I did a strength workout today for the first time on my legs (before it was just dynamic stretching). Wow are they weak! Its my hope that as they get stronger, I can put these nagging injuries to bed and get going. Say a prayer for that. Just got home from my son's back to school night and am enjoying a glass of wine (it was left over from dinner on Sunday). It's tasty - but I miss my suds. Have a great hump day everyone! How are y'all doing on your goals? And speaking of goals - that's the topic for the week. What thoughts do you all have a goals and setting and achieving them? |

My hearts behind this one, and the head is not in the way. I've gotten healthy over the last 6 mo. of inactivity, and I'm chomping at the bit. |

How about off-season training? At this point, my triathlon season is over, and I have the marathon in about a month. My tentative plan is to rest up and keep it very easy for the week after the marathon, then go from there. Swim: I have Masters swimming three days per week - Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. That should let me make some good progress in the water. 3 sessions per week, ~4 hours per week. Bike: I plan on hitting the trainer pretty hard this winter - the trainer road 11 week century plan will take me from the marathon to the end of the year. 8 hours per week, 4 rides per week. Run: ??? I figure on three runs per week (long, speed, and a fartlek/hill/random), but I'm just guessing here and trying to figure out what I want to do on the run. Distances, etc., I just don't know about. That plan should take me through January 1, which leaves me 36 weeks to IMWI. |

It will give you a great base from which to work from as you head towards the finish line of IMWI. Have you given any thought to taking a little more time off? You've had a busy year and the IM training is nothing to sneeze at. Give some thought to giving your self more time to recover and blow off some steam before hitting it hard again (there will be plenty of time for that for the both of us!). Onward! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed I woke up this morning and my legs (quads, hammys, and glutes) were a little sore from the strength training yesterday, so I decided to skip my dynamic stretching (the lunges are killing me) and just ran. It was a nice run (I was able to get it in early before it got to hot here. It's so hot - I thinking of moving to Canada! )but I kept pushing the pace and running faster despite my best efforts to slow down and stay in Zone 1. Once I noticed that I had sped up - I was able to slow down only to speed up again once my concentration strayed. Its a constant fight for me to do less. When I do an interval - I will often think about running a bit more just to reach a sign or the end of the song that I am listening to. I'm compulsive that way. But since I signed up for IMMT - I'm becoming more vigilant - but its going to take a while to break this habit. No wonder I've been constantly injuring myself. Does anyone have any suggestions to help me stick with a slow pace as I build up my pace? With the goal of slowing down, I've loaded slower music onto my iphone and I run along with the beat. I spend time focusing on form. What else can I do? Thanks! PS - I know this is the Beer Drinker Appreciation society but I've brewing a batch of cider for the fall. Should be pretty tasty after a run or bike ride. First wine, yesterday and now cider - what the hell is wrong with me |

On my Garmin 910xt (or my old FR70), you can program high and low limits based on HR or pace; the annoying beeping creates Pavlov conditioning, in that it annoys me to no end to I slow down to stop it from yelling at me. |

I set a per mile pace goal for each run. Some runs are slow, long. Some are short sprints. Interval training inbetween. If you have a knowledge of where your threshold mile time is that causes you difficulty and leads to injury, set a goal of :30/mi or 1:00/mi slower, and build from there. Do that until your base is set, (think weeks) and your comfortable to move up in the pace. You should be able to have a few slow days, maybe a longer slow effort in there, and get away with adding in a higher tempo paced run (shorter distance) after you've established that healthy base. Nothing wrong with Cider. Doesn't that fall in line with the whole fruit motif???? Wine on the other hand? |

During these walk breaks you could do dynamic stretching during the walk break (swing kicks). I usually do this 4min run and 30 second walk with swing kicks for runs over 4 miles. |

Guilty of drinking beer, I was at the Monday night football game where I enjoyed some tasty Ballast Point Big Eye IPAs (bad idea for a tailgate beer). I had to take the next day off from training as they kicked my butt. Today I went for a run and I was sleeping by 7:30, I skipped swimming since I was asleep. The plan for the rest of the week is a couple more runs, OWS Thursday, Brick on Friday, visit family on Saturday, come home Sunday and see if I have time for a workout. Next week is tapper week for my first race! |

PS - I just want to point out that the idea fpr Monday Night football came from Cleveland (I won't use the guys name because of what he ultimately did to the city) but just remember that every time you're getting ready for some football! |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Hi all - thanks for all of your great ideas on how I can stay healthy by going slower. If I can make it through this week, it will mark the first time in a while when I haven't missed a workout due to injury (now being drunk while smoking meat is another story ) I have a video training session today for the first time and got to meet my trainer. I think I got lucky - even though I am only paying her $25 a month - she spent 30 minutes with me and was great about answering my questons about how to do my rehab exercises correctly . She also told me that as long as I wasn't really pushing it - I could go a little faster and follow a natural pace. (She made the same point you did Kevin about figuring out the speed if I get injured and then running slower) So, when I went out for a bike ride - I pushed it a little bit. It felt good and I burned enough calories to enjoy the game tonight with a few tasty beverages! Oh yea! PS - I had my first ironman dream last night. This year is going to awesome... for all of us! Prost! |

It gets plenty cold in your neck of the woods, right? Wait for it to get cold, leave your cider out in the cold, then take the ice that forms in the morning, and throw the ice away |

Hi David, Tailgating is a blast! I'm already loving it, I volunteered over the weekend and was so excited watching athletes compete I went home and signed up for my second race (Oct 6th) and I haven't even completed my first race yet. Thanks for the support, I feel good about my strengths and weakness (swimming), one of the reasons I signed up as a clydesdale, hopefully not too many of us. I'm more excited than anything, I need to calm my excitement! PS- I will remember that next time I'm having a beer getting ready for some football! |

I don't know if you all know this but 9 years ago my youngest son fell out of a third story window and suffered a serious TBI. He spent 3 months in a rehab hospital and thanks be to god, he came home with is 3 days before Christmas. The rehab hospital saved his life and it's my goal to raise 10 grand for them this year. So I am on the phone with the hospital today talking with the head of charitable giving. He has invited a doctor to join the conversation. This guy has done 9 IM... He tells me that he will do anything to help franciscan and get its name out there. So, he tells me he's going to help me find a bib for boston and that he is going to try to find one for himself so he can run it with me. And then... he offers to run IMMT with me. It's sold out - but he's going to get a spot through the IM charity... How awesome is that! I've got a running buddy! Lord help us. I'm gonna need everyone's help. I cant f$*@ this up! |

Boston and IMMT - looks like 2014 is going to be a busy year for you! A training partner is also a wonderful thing - I run almost exclusively by myself, and the boredom gets rough. I keep trying to get my boss to start running again (he's a former marathoner, and talks about getting back into it quite a bit), but there are so many times where I would love someone to keep me accountable and push me that last bit. With swimming, I have my master's group, and with running, there's the bike club, but running is just me and the road, and it's rough sometimes. |

Charles - I've gotta say, I haven't run with anyone else sense HS CC. I enjoy running solo - especially now that I have my kids and I don't get a whole lot of quiet time. But there is no way I can say no given my lack of inexperience. He sounds like a good guy and I hope we become friends. If he helps get me to that finish line, He won't buy another beer as long as I'm around. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society 2 - Closed Got in my run today. Boy am I slow. I ran a 37.5 minute 5K on a somewhat challenging HS CC course. The good news is that I figure I can shave off 9 to 10 minutes over the course of the next few months because I ran a 28 minute 5K at the beginning of the season. Luckily, I've got a rest day tomorrow before a 40 minute bike ride on Sunday. Knees are a little sore and I hope to ice them a lot of the weekend. All in all - a decent week! I'm gonna celebrate with some pizza and beer. Right now, I'm drinking a lot of sours - anyone like those? |

Charles is right in that you have your schedule full for next year. We'll all be here to support you on this outstanding ride. Crazy thing happened today which I must share with you... I'm a lone wolf when it comes to training as well. That would be cool to have someone to commiserate with while training. Hope the best for you, and I'm pulling for you out here on the left coast. |
