![]() | ![]() Not sure what I am going to do today. I have an 11 mile run scheduled. 3 miles easy, 5 miles at marathon goal pace, then 3 miles easy. BUT.... It's currently -11 F outside with an expected high of 0 F. We'll see. I really don't want to spend 1:45 on the treadmill. |

![]() | ![]() ernestov - 2012-01-19 6:23 AM Dang it Chris, aren't you risking your health running in those temps? I'd say dreadmill, get an ipod. cross-country skiers ski (and really go all out) in these temps and lower all the time. And there is a controversy about whether they hurt their lungs doing so, but I think the consensus is that they might be temporarily burning their throats if they don't cover their mouths when they go, but that's it. I'll probably do the treadmill because of the wind chill. That's -31 F. I don't want to have to deal with that. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jenputnam - 2012-01-18 11:05 PM The only thing I would do different is backing off the intensity stuff on Friday, you will be toast for the weekend and I can see you're planning on going long Saturdays and Sundays.Ernesto Quick question... Since I an going be doing most of my easy runs on the new, more level trail (elevation gain/loss around 80 ft verses 600ft-1000ft) should I change anything I've been been doing? Today's run I was trying to figure out how to get on and off the trail so there were lots of starts and stops. It isn't entirely flat but I told Scott how I liked the "slopes". (can't call it hills, it doesn't rise or drop over 200 feet) Also, considering the 10k we are going to do has an incline starting at mile 1.5 to mile 2 (mild slope). Mile 2.3 to 3 it rises another 140 feet (4%). Do you think I need to do tempo runs on that same type of inclines when the time comes? I guess I'm looking for training advice to get my time as close to 50 minutes, given last years results. Here is my link from last year. (sorry no HR data back then). http://connect.garmin.com/activity/77305193
Our training plan right now is as follows. Monday-Off/recovery/Recharge Tuesday- Swim(start next week)am/trainer session(tempo/muscular endurance)pm Wed- Hills/Speedwork-track/speed sharping/strides Thursday- Swim am/Aerobic short/speed sharpening pm Friday- Hills /track/time trials-tempo Saturday- Long Bike or Trainer Session-Aerobic Sunday- Long Run Aerobic
The slashes indicate the different workouts that we will be doing as we progress through our training plan. Scott's will be slightly different because of the swim. As for the 10K, you are doing a lot of hills already, I think you need tempos to get your body used to race pace, but do them after a warm up and cool down after. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WOW Chris that is cold. And here I am complaining to myself this morning about how cold it is. Was about 18 F this morning went out for a run and didn't dress warm enough. Turned around about 8 minutes out. Ran on treadmill for another 30 minutes. I really hate the treadmill. In my small gym it faces a wall and a clock so depressing. A few questions: 1. How do I get my garmin to beep when I hit my MAF heart rate? I went to settings and setup my MAX heart rate to MAF but it never beeps when I go above that number. 2. Today was first day I used HR monitor on treadmill I found I had to run a very fast pace to get my heart rate in the MAF zone. I can't keep up that pace for a long time. Should I just keep a lower pace on treadmill? Thanks Edited by Jrdimaur 2012-01-19 6:53 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris: I just logged 90 minutes on dreadmill because I couldn't bring myself to running in 16 degree weather in the pitch black. Ain't fun, but it serves its purpose. I had a treadmill in my basement, but I can't handle running on it for long periods of time so I go to the gym. At least looking at people helps to pass the monotony. Joe D: What garmin are you using? Only downside was the kick set - felt like I was going noware - anybody any tips for KS? Get some fins (like these http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/23059.htm),not the short ones (like zoomers). Joe - I have always wondered about fins, but to me [uneducated] they seem like a cheat as it makes it easier to move through the water so you dont get the same work out - so what benefit do I get from using fins? |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Chris, I agree with Ernesto....hit the dreadmill. I run in the cold here too but at some point you have to suck it up and head indoors. I've heard stories about people freezing their lungs in extreme cold and landing in the hospital with pneumonia. I'll take boredom over pneumonia anyday. Awesome Rachel! I know quite a few Brits that have done IMCH and they say the hills aren't too bad. IM France was much worse for hills. In Zurich, the names of the hills are much scarier than the hills themselves.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() chapfallen - 2012-01-18 11:59 PM Continuing Ernesto's taper week. 30min easy spin on the turbo last night. Was glad it was an easy one as my cold has developed somewhat, and between a bad night's sleep and a long day at work yesterday i was very tired. But it's good to spin the legs out before bed... In other exciting news, we've finally sorted out our plans for this year. I know I told you all about how we were planning on doing IM France. Well a couple of weeks ago one of our friends started convincing my husband it wasn't a good idea He's done a couple of different IM events and pointed out to Kevin that he's really going to stuggle on the bike. My husband isn't great on hills, and of course IM France has one mother of a hill. Anyway, there's been some juggling of leave from work, and a number of other issues to sort out, but last night Kevin and I entered IM Switzerland! So it's official. We've got the confirmation emails, we've paid out the (ridiculously huge amount of) money. There's no turning back now. So 15th July is the target date. I've been looking forward to this for ages, but now that we've actually entered I'm mostly feeling terrified... Rachel, Congrats on pulling the trigger. My dear friend Billy Durham (from Dallas) will be doing the same race. He says that IM Switzerland is a beautiful race and a forgiving Ironman course if there is such thing. Much easier than IM France. Count on this group's support for tips and strategies for your (madness) upcoming IM training. Edited by ernestov 2012-01-19 7:56 AM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I thought I had a great plan, my wife had an early meeting out of town so she got the kids up, while I slept in. Then 1 hour sufferfest fight club this morning and short run this afternoon. A computer (operator) error caused the video to stop at 16:23. By time I figured out what I was doing wrong I had 15 minutes left to work out. So, I stopped at 30 and will do a longer runch. - Mitch 19 days 25:35'00" ----------------------------------- |

My swim coach recommends fins to help develop proper kicking technique and improve flexibility. The key is to use them sparingly and not as a crutch to prop up your swimming. I use them for kicking sets and certain drill sets, but never use them when I am focused on all round swimming. Finds are meant to be a training aid and not a crutch. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto et al: I am giving my calf until Monday run to see if it heals, but a little concern it might be issues with the Achilles (although it would be rare, as the "knot" is not in the heel area but midway between the heel and the calf - so in the upper portion of the AT) or inflamed soleus muscle. Possibly leaning towards the soleus inflammation theory, as there is no pain, just a tight/knot sensation. Also swimming and biking are not a problem, and do not seem to aggravate it. While doing some research, I have read from different sources that running too slow might actually cause injuries - mainly due to a change in running form to acquire the slower speeds, which results in putting extra effort on muscle groups that haven't worked up for this distance, such as overworking the small calf muscle and not engaging the larger ones. I believe it might be a combination of this, and adding too many miles to soon, but difficult to tell. I know that when running slow, I feel my legs working harder (or maybe supporting more load might be a better description). So a couple of questions: 1) How do you keep your running form when running at 4-5 minutes slower than your regular pace? I feel like I am plodding along instead of running. 2) Would using a foam roller (or equivalent) help? can it worsen the injury/symptoms? If symptoms persist next week, might end up at a Dr. However, first I need to find a PCP (as mine quit his practice a couple months back) to get a referral to a physical therapist or podiatrist.
