mehaner - 2012-09-05 11:18 AM car diagnosis:  OIL FILTER FELL OFF.  mother effer, i hope that car isn't completely screwed.

Yikes.  Did engine sieze up?  If so.  It's a gonner.

When was your last oil change and who did it... its their fault.

Did you drive it in any unusual places, ie Offroad?

it likely happened when i left my house this morning, i heard the clunk of something hitting the undercarriage, assumed it was just some crap in the road.  i drove to work - 15 minutes - car was shaky and noisy and "surge-y" - like it stopped running for a second when i was moving faster/steadier, oil light came on, stalled once when downshifting to make a turn.  After about 3 hours, I drove it across the street to the nearest service shop - 2 minutes.  No issues besides shaky, noisy.  Oil light still on.  Grand total of 10 miles, maybe?

Oh... not good.  put a filter on it, oil in it and trade it in if it still runs... unless you had a very recent oil change.

I'm not a mechanic, and there could be damage, BUT, if it was still running, there may be a chance that with a new filter and putting oil back in, it might be ok.

But I will defer to anyone who knows more.

Football tonight!  YAY!

I need to get my quick run in first, but then kick back and enjoy...

I also have a 2 hour run tomorrow night.  My longest has only been around 80 min.  What up with that?  Stupid plan, making me run and bike far.  me no like.

those are tough little engines, but driving anything without oil is bad bad bad... if indeed the filter was off all that time you have probably used up most of if not all of the engines life...

If it was still running you should be ok. It might have cause some wear but that won't be present for a while. If you have an oil pressure gauge in your cluster watch and see if it's lower than normal. I have seen cars that have done this before and they were fine after.

I think the test is if they can get it to turn over for starters.  It may run for a while without oil, but as soon as you stop and it cools, it never starts again.

You might be fine since you did not drive it hard and it did not have much of a chance to warm up.  Suggest this... Drop the oil pan and clean it out.  Replace and do a good oil change.  Then after a few hundred miles, do another oil change and drop the oil pan.  open up the oil filter to see if there is a bunch of metal.  If not button it up and press on.

Odd that the oil filter would work its self loose like that.  then again... I have had odd things happen with my vehicles too.

Worst case they can prime the motor before starting it but it should be ok as long as this doesn't happen again. Watching the oil pressure will be the biggest clue to see if it drops due to the excessive clearances.

Does it have an oil pressure gauge or just a warning light?

True, might be ok, depending when the oil pressure went to zero and how long it ran after that... I still say that if you where even considering a new vehicle... if its still running, sooner is better than later...  good call on checking the pressure after though...

I know of a pickup that was actually seized from a guy doing his own oil change and forgetting to put oil in it before he started it.  Once it cooled off it ran, was never the same but he drove it for quite a while.

I'd agree with the sooner is better sentiment here. I had an Audi that had oil issues and was never the same even after getting a ton of work done.

Cheap option is to do what Cord suggests, Oil her up and see.  If you can get a day or two out of it drive it in to carmax, and trade it out.  My suggestion is more detailed and given the age of the car perhaps more work than you would want to do but I play weekend mechanic sometimes.  Go with Cord's idea and consider a oil additive so it runs sweet when you brin it in to Carmax

Meh do you have a in cluster oil pressure gauge?

Also I am guessing it has variable valve timing and that was the rough engine and sputtering you felt. The CVVT needs oil pressure to control the timing and when low on oil pressure the engine will run rough. As long as the bearings had enough oil the engine will be ok for now.

The shop should prime the engine first before starting and check the oil for flakes of babbitt (bearing) material.
