WHATS THE BEST WAY TO TRAVEL WITH YOUR ROAD BIKE?  (when you fly)

im thinking WHEN i go someplace SUNNY AND WARM, i might take my bike.

can anyone tell me whats involved?

stacieb

1) take it to your LBS and have them pack it up and ship it, but it's expensive
2) take it with you and check it as baggage
3) you can buy cases to pack them in to take them as checked baggage
4) rent a bike where it's warm and sunny

Copy Cat

from the looks of it...

you can ship your bike via UPS.

you buy a case.

K9100 AIRCADDY

and then take it to a UPS to ship it.

the case is $100 bucks and the shipping is ????? depending on where you want it shipped.

as long as you have a business/residential address to ship it to.

hmmmmm.

gots me thinking.

I know you are doing China 70.3 so that would probably be best case scenario so you have the case already.  Best option is still renting a bike.  Might not be top of the line, but you can still get some mileage in.

Ship it to the hotel you are staying at or a LBS in the area.

yay.  i talked to my friend about CHINA.

more than likely i'll purchase my own bike case before then. either that or beg/borrow/steal one.

but she suggested, because i'll be staying on the mainland BEFORE my race, to have my bike SHIPPED to the HOTEL (where the IMers are stayings) rather than carting it all around Chengdu and then try and get it down to Haiku.

though.  i would LOVE to be able to ride w my friend who lives in CHENGDU.  he's an AVID cyclist and goes on these UBER FAB RIDES into the moutains in Szcechuan.

im thinking he can hook me up w a bike though.

its never the same when its not your own.  but in the long run it would save me the hassle.

RENTING is a good idea too BILL.

i know our local TREK store rents bikes for you to use, mostly to customers that are considering a certain bike and want to 'try it out' before laying down the cash.

i bet i could find some thing like that there.....

when i figure out where THERE is.  LOL

but for the IM i will DEFINATELY have my own bike w me.  come hell or high water.  even if i have to strap the thing on my back and haul it over there myself.

heck. the bike only weighs 18 pounds, its full carbon.

all the other sh^t i'll be taking with me will weigh more than that!!!!!

Stacie I've been thinkin' because well what else am I going to do today. You should think about at least doing the sprint at Black Bear. From what I've been reading you can walk your bike up the hills just as fast or faster than you can climb them, and there is no shame in it because almost everyone does it.

You would totally rock the swim and the run. NJKim is going to come Sherpa. The sprint is on Saturday, I'll come early, you can crash with me.

If the timing is good for you atleast consider it. CGI is supposed to put on really good races.

AW thanks ANN.

that would be GREAT, especially spending a weekend with you and KIM.

i have three local races that im gonna be doing around that time.

a nice progression...

a Sprint right over the border in OH.

then an Oly just a little ways north in Edinboro

and then my A-race in OH mid-June with a few of my friends.

this way i dont have to miss to much work or be gone from the kids.

wgraves7582 - 2010-02-10 1:55 PM So I am contemplating a new bike for TransIowa and all that fun stuff I do all year long:

Let me know what you think of the color choices?

thats not a BIKE??!!?

[what is it that were looking at?]

the color IS UBER COOL though i have a preference for ALL THINGS RED.

x2 on RED.  My roadie is named "Big Red."  He's a Specialized Roubaix Comp.  Red and Black. 58cm 'cause I am tall. There was a long debate on gender of and naming of bikes in another thread prob CoJ.  Big Red is definitely a "He."  My MTB is white (boring, but it was on sale and I have love/hate relationship with off-road.)  His name is Stumpy.  And of course, I told you all about Beautiful Blue Betty somewhere a million threads ago.

Seriously cool colors to choose from.

Good afternoon Ghoulies. Glad everyone's still having a nice day.

Bill, I love the idea of building your own bike. Especially if you've got a good LBS to check your work.

Stacie, good luck with the bike-travel thing. One thing to keep in mind is that if you're DEFINITELY going to take your bike to China, a shorter air trip to somewhere warm might be good practice. Then again, I understand that good travel bags/cases are quite expensive. Tough call!

Anyone else still around today?
