David,

Any recommendations for websites or software to download my power data to.  Right now I'm using trainingpeaks.com, but to get full access to the power data, they require membership...which is $120 per year.  Garmin connect is cool for mapping and stuff...but not really for power analysis.

I downloaded the free trial version of trainingpeaks WKO+ 3.0, which is the software you can buy and install on your PC.  Haven't played around with it much, but it looks pretty comprehensive...maybe more info than I know what to do with.  It's $130 for license though.

Free is always good...but I'm looking for something that can tell me what I need to know to get better at training with power.  I assume it's a lot more than just knowing your FTP, and what your avg power level was during a ride.  WKO+ got good reviews, but just interested in your opinion on what you used to do with your power data.

Still need to read that darn book.  I'll get to that this weekend.

if you want hte best, WKO is it.

that said, i think poweragent is the PT version (i had an SRM so have not used PT software). I thin kthat is free (check their website for download).

there may be a few more out there made by independent places as well (post on slowtwitch.com and you'll have more than enough answers on other software quickly).

All that said, i just used what came with the SRM, very similar to power agent or whatever PT uses now. gave you the numbers, showed the graph, but left all of the annalyzing up to you.

I probably only downloaded about 1 out of every 15 rides or so though. Tests and some longer hard rides were about it. Once i knew the numbers i needed to hit, or chase after, i didn't spend a ton of time pouring over files. If i went too hard, or something went wrong, i tpyically knew where in the ride it was.

Carl, awesome job on that brick. I probably would have of grabbed  a beer after the ride instead of a 3 mile run.. but thats just me.

Anyway onto TT questions, I havent been putting on too much volume lately since my TT is only 30 km so I have been training at about 25-30 miles. Long for now being 35 miles. I take it trying for the negative split would work out well for this course. It is supposed to be flat and fast. I guess give it 85-90% for the first half and then 100% for the rest? I have never been a strategy kind of guy. I just go with how I am feeling. But to me a Time trial is completely different than anything I have ever done before. Thanks in advance for any advice yall have to give.

Ok...good to know.  I think I'll just use this free trial for now...then use the free software from Garmin.  I'll calculate the zones on my own and see how it goes.

I think I'm just a kid in the candy store right now.  I see tons of graphs that look like candy...but after a while when you eat too much candy...you get sick of it...and you realize you just need it in small doses.

One thing you will want to do is get in a good warmup.  If you have a trainer...bring it.  Get in a good warmup with some hard efforts thrown in.

Also, I'm guessing your going to have an assisted start where someone is holding you up by the saddle.  If you haven't done this before, it's a little awkward.  Just trust your spotter and relax.  If your tense, you're likely to wobble side to side and might tip over...lol...I almost did.

If it is assisted, you also want to start in a fairly hard gear.  Maybe one gear easier than you plan to be in for most of the ride.  When they tell you go, just stand on your pedals and start mashing.  I didn't see anyone trying to spin their way up to speed in the first 300 yards.  It's not like how you would start the bike leg of a tri where you start in an easy gear.

I defer to David for anything else...LOL

I made it back from mine and my daughters trip to DC and made a lot of memories with her.  We had an incredible time with her and her classmates (with a few exceptions).  The trip to Arlington National cemetery was the best.  The changing of the guard and the wreath laying with student from our school was one of the highlights.

I did have time for one run whiole there and I made it a 5k with a strong effort.  The only problems I had with the run was that it was on a dreadmill that had been set up in kilometers rather than miles so I didn't have a good idea about my pace until I got home and downloaded the info.  It was a 7:31 pace in a small room where it was pretty warm.  The rest of the time we were back at the hotel at 10 PM or after and up at 5:30 AM.  We walked 34 miles in 4 days so I feel like I had plenty of exercise but no elevated HR work.

Anyway, I'll have some catch up reading to do and I hope everyone has done well with their training.

I've been out of the pool for a couple weeks due to the fact that I've been obsessing over the bike and pure laziness.  My goal is to get back in this week and try to get as fast as I can over the next few weeks.  Hopefully I didn't loose too much fitness.

Did an OWS today with my masters group. Nice. I think I really prefer it to the pool. We did 1600 yrds. I'm the slowest, but not by much, so it pushes me to try and keep up. I think this will be a good thing cuz it will push me to up my speed & distance.

I wanted to get a swim today too but family time came first.  We went to see a movie after I got back from my run and then I have been catching up on some other things that got left when I went out of town.  I hope to get a good hard ride and a hard swim in tomorrow but I am not counting any chickens until I get them both in.

I have officially popped my cherry.

I graduated from tipping over learning to clip in, to crashing my bike.

Luckily, by some miracle I'm okay.  I was hammering down a flat after coming down a hill and was on the wheel of 2 guys in front.  Somehow a 1 foot branch ended up on the sholder lying perpendicular to the way we were heading.  The first two guys avoided it, but I wasn't so lucky.  Didn't see it coming, lost control, the wheel eventually turned 90 degrees, and I went over the bars at about 25 mph.  My left hand, forearm, and tricip has some decent road rash, but I didn't hit my head, no broken bones, and my shoulder joint is completely fine.

It all happened in slow motion, and I thought I was a complete gonner.  Luckily nobody was on my wheel, as most of the group was about 100 feet behind.  My bike is fine, as only the brakes got a few scratches.  The rest of the bike pretty much ended up tangled in my legs, so the frame doesn't even have a scratch.

Overall...I'm pretty darn lucky.  If I did that 100 times, I would say this result would be in the top 3.

Showering sucks...and you should have seen the faces I was making when I put peroxide on it...but I'll take it any day over a concussion, separated shoulder, or broken arm/ribs.

Ride safe out there!

you know what's crazy about having training data from your garmin...then downloading it to trainingpeaks WKO.

You can view your second by second progress as far as speed, power, distance, cadence, etc

When I crashed...I went from 24.9 mph to 0 mph in 4.7 feet.

Someone can probably calculate how many newtons of force your body absorbed to bring you and your bike to 0 mph.   Glad to hear that all you ended up with was a serious case of road rash.

OK....I joined the ranks, yesterday.  No idea on the splits, but I did the 300yd/12mi./5K in 1:15:39.  I was really pleased with how it ended up.....but I have nothing to compare it to.  First race of any kind.  It was really humid/hot.....but I'm thinking I wouldn't want to run it again next weekend for a better time.  I think I ran a pretty good race (for me).  The swim was a minor issue.  But, until I see my splits.....I'm not gonna get upset.  T1 was OK.....T2 was great.  Bike was 1.2mph faster than I hoped to do.....and the run is what I really wanna see.  I know I beat 30min (my goal).  I just don't know by how much.

Anyways....I'll post a full report when they post our splits.  Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

In other news, our diet plan seems to be working.  Besides this stupid stuffy head cold that I have, I feel great.  Lots of energy and my workouts haven't been suffering.  Down a couple pounds...probably 1 or so overall from last week.

sweet...I watched that on the Versus channel yesterday.  Pretty exciting finish.  I was hoping the breakaway group could hold on.  Amazing how those guys have that much left in the tank after riding for 6+ hours
