Subject: May training totals

How did everyone do for May AFA your training goals?  I just totaled up what my month SHOULD have been according to my plan and I was short across the board for everything

Swim: Planned - 8:00 / Actual - 6:30
Bike: Planned - 10:00 / Actual - 8:23
Run: Planned - 6:40 / Actual 4:20

Not so hot, but considering I did a couple running races and a tri for the month, I don't feel too bad not hitting those numbers.  June WILL be better!

I fell a little short too.  I think part was because I ended up sick for a few days.  As for the swim, I started swimming more in the open water and kind of neglected my pool time, oops!

Swim: planned 25k yards; actual 13.5k yards
Bike:  planned 400 miles; actual 385 miles
Run:  planned 40 miles; actual 42 miles

As for June, looking for similar training goals with slightly higher run miles as I try to enter back into my run routine.

I was pretty loosey goosey with my 'plan' and any goals, but I'd estimate that I hit my swim about as hoped, fell WAY short on the bike (by well over half), and hit the run dead on (was hoping to hit 100 miles, ended May with 100.84 miles (in 16.5 hours.  Imagine how far I'd run if I had any speed!).

June will be lower numbers for sure, at least on the swim and run.  Hope to jack up the bike mileage a bit though.  Not off to a great start, today is day 3 of a big fat nothing for training...

I don't think I could ever plan a month on my work schedule. I just try to do what I can when I can and make concious effort to periodize and or build depending on what races are coming up. I'm completely OCD and would drive myself insane if I actually wrote out a plan and had to try and follow it when I don't know what nights or weekends I have to work until the day of or the friday of. I'm happy with my totals though in May, especially with the sick days, and races/rest days involved. But looking at how hard I work, I feel I should be faster !!!!

May's totals:
Bike: 13h 49m 58s - 210.88 Mi
Run: 9h 28m 30s - 58.8 Mi
Swim: 6h 31m - 14154.67 M
Strength: 6h 45m

Well as I have said I had to reduce my volume a bit and it put me back in the gym.  In the past I have always researched and kept up with supplimets and their benifits to performance if any.  My thoughts of the past when I was lifting back in 2000 were that other than a multi vitamin, Omagas, Creatine & a good Whey Protein powder everything else on the market was complete useless CRAP!!!  This time around I have found something else to add to that list of WORKS but IN this case the product also has a Noticlable benifit to endurance activity like running.

 http://www.betaalanine.info/

I started taking a supliment called Jacked 3D which has Betaalanine Creatine and some other stuff in it.  You take it about 30 min before a workout and it puts your energy through the roof but without side effects that some crap like fat burners or Effedra did.  I didn't expect it to have any benifit to running but I have noticed a nice boost in performance if I use it before a run.  above link confirms it is probably the betaalanine in it.  Check it out may be something you want to give a try.  Let me know if any of you try it and see similar results.

I have a # of supps in my pantry that I used to take w/ BA in it.  I can't stand that 'I'm on ecstasy tingly feeling' that stuff gives you.  USP labs does make some pretty intense products fo sho.

ETA: I took my RHR this morning after I ran across this chart in another thread yesterday.  51!  Which is awesome, one of my goals for 2010 was to get 'fit' enough that my RHR was below 50 so I'm right on track!

Trina,  Not sure if you're interested in a larger serving of the coconut water, but this 12 pack is a couple cents cheaper per oz than the 11.2 oz tetra paks.  I'm gonna go w/ these and just throw in some regular water to top off a 24 oz bike bottle.  Saving 2 cents/oz won't get you a 'free' pack until after you've purchased 5 of them, but if you drink it regularly, might be worth it.

I'm doing Muddy Buddy on Sunday, although it won't be much of a race...just a fun event really. Actually, my buddy broke his finger last weekend and could very well have some trouble with the obstacles.

Did another swim in the ocean after work this morning.  I was planning on a run too, but just didn't have the desire after a long night.   Instead, I spent the rest of the day working around the house.  I'm leaving for a week vacation with the family after my race on Sunday so I'm trying to get a bunch of yardwork done now.

No races planned for the weekend.  Looking to enjoy my rest day today and continue to build the base over the weekend.  Excited about next Tuesday as it will be my first swim lesson!

Angels Camp.  Its an old gold mining town located in the Sierra foothills.

This has become an annual family tradition for us.  Its mainly about relaxation with the family... lots of sitting by the pool, tennis, local wineries, hiking, and, of course, some MTB riding with wife.

Last year, we toured two local caverns, hiked Big Trees State Park, and took the kids to the RR museum in Jamestown.  Not really sure what excursions we will do this year though.

YEAH!  Those runs look fun. My buddy wanted me to do the Warrior Dash with him in October, but unfortunately, I'm committed to another race that weekend.

3.4h — Abandoned equipment.

This rule is quite simple: don't leave any litter or gear on the course. Littering the course with cups, bottles, goo packs, pumps, tires, etc., threatens the ability of race organizers to get permits to produce events. While it is permitted to drop trash at aid station, participants should refrain from leaving trash anywhere else. Besides, it's against the law!

Here's the rule:

3.4h. Abandoned Equipment.
No participant shall leave any equipment or personal gear on the race course. Any violation of this section shall result in a variable time penalty.

It really pisses me off when I see competitors leaving trash on the course, even more so on the trails during MTB and XTERRA races.  Why do people think just because they're competing it gives them the right to liter?  I wish this rule would be enforced more often!

Fun! I love Ironstone...have you seen the gold nugget they have there? It's MASSIVE! Oh, the wine is good too. My gf and I tried to go to Moaning Caverns once but she is claustrophobic and chickened out. They were nice enough to refund our money.

My family has a place in Mi Wuk Village - so we spend lots of time at Pinecrest Lake fishing during the summers.

Errrr... tempo run was less than stellar today.  I'm going to contribute part of my misery to the weather, whcih was hot and humid.

Richard your analysis of my run plan might of been spot on.  I had a pretty rough time holding a sub-seven minute tempo today.  My run fitness is definately swirling in the toilet right now!  I'm still going to shoot for 42-45 10k off the bike this weekend, but it won't be at the low exertion I originally had planned.

What a difference a few months can make! Frown

Hey, I broke my ankle (fibula) 1.5 years ago...gotta a steel plate in it.  Couldn't run for a few months & then was a slow buildup to mileage.  I know how much fitness you can lose!!!

Fortunately, you started from a high shelf, so your loss, is still greater than many, in peak performance!!

Good Luck this weekend!!

The weather wouldn't cooperate this AM so I ended up back at the local gym for the first time in a couple of months and did my circuit training (weights mixed in with cardi for an hour) course.  Work out went very well.

This PM sat down and reviewed my logs for the past couple of months.  Totally convinced I've gotten value out of the BT membership!  Progress is hard to see when you look day to day.  But when you look at a couple of months, it can really show the gains.  A couple things really stand out to me.  First, in spite of my massive frustration with the swimming, there's been real progress.  On 12 May did my first 100m w/o stopping.  On 24 May did 200m.  On 3 June did 250m.  That's a gain of 50m every 10 days.  New goal will be to add in 50m every week.  Hoping with the swim lessons it will be easier.  Second, my perception of the required effort has gone down.  I can now do the distances much more comfortably.  Third, my times have really lengthened out.

Thanks again for all of the encouragement.  The "inspires" that show up from time to time really do help.  Also enjoy reading about everyone's challenges -- although I'm not sure that Tim's challenges are comprehensible to a turtle like me!  It's easy to get caught up in thinking that others are doing training with no hurdles/challenges.  Sharing the stories helps to keep things in perspective.

Hope everyone had a great Saturday and have a great Sunday.

Another big positive this AM.  Decided I'd try a bike-run brick.  For the bike, did 20 miles.  Went well / no problems other than the wind.  Did a quick, just over a minute transition and headed out for the run.  Decided the 2.8 mile out and back that I run on occasion would be a good challenge.  Legs felt a little heavy, but not uncomfortable.  As I checked the times, noticed that I was keeping a really solid pace and the HR was relatively good (not as low as when I focus, but not going through the ceiling).  At about 1/2 mile felt normal and just relaxed.  Everything went well and actually got stronger as the run progressed / ended up negative splitting at a 9 minute pace.

The sprint in a couple of months is 12 miles bike / 3.1 miles run so I feel REALLY good about handling that.  Challenge will be the swim.  Optimistic it'll come over the next few weeks, but it sure is frustrating to see the gains in this area are so slow.  On the positive side, the bike/run progress is quite encouraging.

Only other challenge is the lovely arthritic right hip.  It's been "talking" to me a bit lately and I've had to use the ibuprofen on occasion.  Hopefully it will settle down as time goes on.

Hope everyone has a great day!
