| Expert 1051 San Jose | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Sara, we're going to stay in High Wycombe during the week and then London for the weekend. One of Dave's co-workers lives in Oxford so they are going to take an early day and he is going to give us an Oxford tour. I'm looking forward to it. Our hotel is near the river and there is a path so I can easily get my runs in. I'll have to use the stationary bike at the hotel which is going to be a chore and who knows about the swims. I've only been to London once, 24 years ago on another of Dave's business trips. I took our 5 month old son with me so this will be a much easier trip Mike, I've had morning problems all week! I swim at 5:30 and I think last weeks trip and Sunday's race caught up to me and I just couldn't/didn't want to get out of bed at 5:00 this week. Next week, no excuses for me! Kate, you have done amazing this year. It's so fun to read your posts. I hope you realize how fit you've become. Suzie, you should share that link here on BT. Most people here don't even come close to the health issues you are overcoming. Your consistent put one foot in front of the other attitude has been great!. Curt, love the new sig. No more drowning for you I did my long run yesterday. I'm working on not using walking breaks as a crutch. They have value but I've been in the habit of overusing them Today's my day off, yea! Anyone racing this weekend? Johanne | |

| Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Last night I got my first run/first exercise session in for the week. It went OK as I took it really easy. Muscles and cardio felt fine, but did have some joint pain in my hips. Today my muscles were killing me!!! Planned on taking the day off, but when the pain would not let up by 8:30, decided to go for a run this PM. Time was abysmal as I took it super, super easy. Do feel a little better afterwards. Any ideas on why I'm having so much pain this week? While I went hard on Sunday, I did take a few days off to recover. Was hoping that would have made starting back easy. |

| Master 3195 Just South of Boston | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Not sure why you're hurting, Curt. Cold beer usually works if all else fails Went on a nice 26+ mile bike this AM. Everything felt good. Took me about 15 minutes to get things really moving, but once I did, it was good. Pace was a shade under 19 mph which was OK, but would like to get faster. Need to get running, and that is happening tomorrow. |

| Veteran 940 Citrus Heights, CA | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Had a great ride yesterday--16 miles on the trail, in 1:15--a little faster than my last race time, but I was okay with that. It did feel good though.Oh yeah, I also stopped to play 'crossing guard for a big ol' rattlesnake who was making his way across the bike path, I wanted to be sure no one bothered him. Awesome. It was the first time I have actually encountered a snake while out and about on my own, go figure! Today, however, I have just been fighting a major case of the blahs! I have no reason to be down in the dumps, but I just can't get my mood right. Who knows--I will just take a nice, relaxing night for myself, and hopefully tomorrow will be brighter. |

| Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Took the day off training, but did walk 18 holes on the golf course. Awesome round as I shot a 79 (40-39), breaking 80 for the second time in my life. Could have been even better if it were not for the 37 putts!!! I must have missed 6 birdie putts inside 12', missed 2' par putt, and 3 putted 3 holes. On the flip side, my ball striking was incredible as I hit 12 greens for the round. Looking at getting up in the AM and heading on a group ride of around 40 miles. Will remember to hydrate this time so I don't have to call my wife to come rescue me. |

| Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Great job on the golf Curt - what's the 40-39 mean? Is it 40= par and 39 is what you were over or what? Kate - hope the blahs go away. Great job on the ride though. Mike - great ride

| Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Suzie 40 and 39 refer to the number of strokes respectively on the first 9 and second 9 holes. Par is 72 for the course, so I took 7 strokes over par. 80 is a threshold number that people look to "break" (i.e. take less strokes than). If you are consistently under that score, most people would say that you play very well. This year I've been playing about once a week and have spent literally zero time practicing. My scores are the best they have ever been and I credit it all to the tri training. Like I've said before, I feel healthier then I have in years and it's helping in all aspects of life. Heading on the group ride in just about an hour -- hydrating right now to avoid the "locked up legs" fun of last time Have a great Sunday folks. |

| Extreme Veteran 746 | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Curt - ah that makes sense. I've only ever played mini golf, lol but my scores were lousy - par was somewhere around the same as yours but my scores were somewhere in the 100's, lol. Great work on the improvement. Good luck with the group ride tomorrow |

You've got nice goals! Johanne, sounds like you've got a great walking strategy. I've done a walk/run combo in long races 13 miles + and end up being faster when I have a 30 second walk break every 10 minutes! Kate, good luck with the blahs. Sometimes you just need to take a time out from your routine... the feeling will go away! |

| Master 1471 Dunedin | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Had my first DNF yesterday.  I signed up with a friend for a "Point to Pint" 88 mile ride from Syracuse, NY to Cooperstown, NY.  I wasn't feeling well at the start.  I have canker sores in my mouth that hurt when I eat or drink, I've had sinus pressure and pain in my ears for a couple weeks, etc, etc, etc.  I was happy I got so far considering I was way undertrained, but I couldn't hack the hills.  I needed to maintain a 15 mph average and I think I averaged 11 mph!  Considered throwing my bike in a ditch a few times...but the SAG wagon saved me and brought my friend and I to the brewery.  At least we can warn others in our tri club that this ride is crazy hilly! |

| Expert 1051 San Jose | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Yesterday was one of those days when you're happy to get home safe. I planned to go with a friend on a group ride so we met on a corner near our homes and planned to bike about 5 miles to the meeting spot. About 1/2 mile from home, I got a flat on my rear tire. This was my 4th flat and I'm done with that stupid tire! I'm getting news ones this week. Anyway, I decided to walk home to change it since we were on the expressway and my friend was going to go on and let me know if the group ride was going to head back up near me on their route. I figured I could get the tire changed before they would go by. I'm getting faster changing tires AND I was able to figure out the chain without help So she calls me and everyone is a no show so she heads back up to my house and we go out for our 2 hour ride. It was fun to ride with someone since I do most of my training solo. Afterwards I rode to my barn to medicate my horse before coming home. I do that, leave the barn, come around the corner and there is a bicyclist down by the side of the road. Her husband is with her and a car had stopped. The car guy called 911 and I rode back around the corner to a fire station in case they were there so she could get help faster. As soon as I told them she was unconscious (I'm sure they would of responded just as fast) they all jumped up and got in the trucks and zipped down the road. I told the husband that I would ride home and bring my truck back for his bikes so he could go with her in the ambulance. They were loading her up when I got back and he asked for a ride home so he could take his car to the hospital. Poor guy was just in shock. He was in front of his wife and didn't see her go down but he thinks she must of lost control on the gravel on the side of the road. They usually tandem and he said she isn't used to riding by herself and she tends to overcorrect. They have taken tandem bike tours all over the world. Scary and sad to see. They belong to the same local bike club that my friend belongs to so hopefully I'll find out how she is doing. I have a 4 mile run to do today and then a good training week ahead. Happy Sunday! |

| Extreme Veteran 793 Naperville, IL | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Sorry to hear about the DNF Sara. At least you still got to enjoy the post event activities! Got out this AM for the group ride. Ended up doing 50 miles in 3 hours. Had a great time on the ride and learned a ton. Confirmed that the hydration strategy I'm using keeps the cramps at bay. Also learned that at 3 hours, you need to take in a bit more food. Was fine until about the last 40 minutes and then I just did not have any juice in the legs. Limped home and attacked whatever food I could find. Nothing but relaxing and reading for the rest of the day. Enjoy |

| Veteran 940 Citrus Heights, CA | Subject: RE: Sink or SWIM! with WittyCityGirl - CLOSED Sara--Sorry to here about your DNF--I know you'll get it next time though! Of course, you did get the beer--thats the important thing! :D I'm still a bit off today, mentally, that is...I think its just that I've had to be incredibly 'social' the last week or so--I am used to working by myself in the reptile house at least a few days a week, but lately, I have been training new keepers as well as working with the other primary...I am truly not the most social person--I enjoy 'me' time, curling up with a good book or movie, etc...if I have to consistently be talking to another person while working my ENTIRE shift, I just get really worn down! I dunno, I have always been this way--I guess I'm kind of odd. In any case, tomorrow after work, I am leaving with 2 of my friends for a brief camping trip in the Sierras---while it will mostly be eating and drinking, I am looking forward to just doing NOTHING for one full day! ...And then it will be back to training on Wednesday! Til then, everybody have a great few days!!! |

Was it working out where you were in the sets you were doing or the time wasted by the side of the pool that messed you up? If it was the first bit I find counting the laps helps to work out where you are in a set when I have to interupt swim workouts |

By the time the 2nd guy showd, I'd 'cooled down' to pre swim conditions. I figured I'd just go swim with the remaining 15 minutes I had. The lap counting I leave to my watch |

So yesterday I had to do a 2 hour run. I told myself that I could walk 1 min at the 15, 45, 1:15 and 1:45 and 2 min at the 30 and the 1 hr mark. So in all I walked 8 min and ran the rest. It was the best distance run I've had in a long time and mostly it was because I made a plan and then stuck to it. I got 11 miles in and could of kept going. It was a confidence boost for me because I'm always doubting that I even could run some days. The mind is a fickle thing.
