Barry, thanks for the allergy tip.  I started back on my allergy meds yesterday and that seemed to help.

I also had a pre-race massage and 9 hours of sleep.  At least I will be rested on Sunday.

Jen, you are where I was a few months ago.  You want it but are still trying to figure out how to get it.  Just don't give up.  Rely on the conversations on the forum and take what works for you.  I agree this is the most powerful tool in my arsenal.

Everyone have a great weekend whether you are racing or training.

Athlinks.com is really straightforward.  It caches endurance type athletic event results for pretty much every organized race/event across the US.  You can go in and search for your results and claim them.  Then you can link to your friends who also compete so that you can see how each other are doing. I'm linked to my Brother-In-Law since we do some races together and just added Chris as a friend.  They've added some enhancements so you can see quickly how you did against the field and also tracks PRs for you.

My guilty pleasure is after I have met someone that I know competes or appears to compete is to check them out on Athlinks.  you can look up anyone's name.  For uncommon names like me it is easy to find.  More common names will return results by age, event and state so you can then narrow it down.  More often than not I am throughly impressed and use it as motivation to improve myself.

Great Jackie!

I just uploaded my to garmin connect. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/118694653
Official time (at least on the website so far) 3:35:59. So no Boston Qualify.

Felt really good for about 20 miles. Wheels fell off the bus after big hill at mile 21 just after 3 hours. Started walking then running, walking then running. Really just a death march at the end. All I can say is that a marathon is the hardest athletic event I've ever done.

Oh well. Race report to follow.

Congrats to all the racers!

My weekend was two solid runs leading up to my half mary in two weeks.  Pace run on Sat and long run (Higdon 3/1) on Sunday.  I ran the pace run faster than I should but was happy with how I performed.  Given yesterday's run I was very happy with how my long run today turned out.

I'm sorry to hear about your meltdown, it is awful to have to slow down. Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail...

Regardless, many dream about that time, and it is very, very fast for a rookie marathon. I agree that having to walk brings you down, but rather than concentrating on that and missing Boston by a couple of minutes, I would say you should embrace the joy of being a marathoner, not too many my friend can say they've achieved such thing.

Since you already have the base, come on over to Dallas December 4th and do White Rock marathon (it is huge), much more forgiving as a course than that climb on mile 21 you had to endure and almost a downhill (slight) for the last 5 miles.

Thanks, but that reminds me of a colleague who said to his wife "when should we have another one?" immediately after she had given birth.

Right now, 11 hours after the event, my legs still hurt too much to even think about another marathon. Tomorrow I'll be walking verrry slowly.

Congrats Ernesto, Carol, Jackie and Chris on competing and finishing your races this weekend!

Ernesto, glad to see you finally decided to compete and overall, it seems you did pretty good considering you had not trained much (and even gone through 70 days without swimming Smile).  Your bike and run segments look solid and I'm sure you are now enjoying the good feeling that comes with finishing a race!

Jackie, congrats on taking 3rd place, that is awesome, especially considering that you were worried about how you were going to perform on this one!

Chris, in my opinion you did great on your marathon and I'm very impressed with your results! Your pace and execution seem right-on for the majority of the race until you hit those unfortunate hills at the end.  Congrats on a great effort!

Gabe,

Thanks a lot, man. I am jumping back into the water this week, I'm not joking with that anymore... I had a great race despite my lack of training, the course was slow, lots of rollers. By looking at other people's times, my bike leg was actually superb, run kinda average and my swim put me ON THE BOTTOM 50% of the field.

How do you feel for Chicago? are you ready for the challenge?

Thanks Ernesto. Actually, I would have EXACTLY BQ'd for 2013 if they hadn't tightened the standards by 5:59 per age group.

I'm coming to the conclusion that every new distance is a completely new experience, so you learn a lot the first time. An olympic is different than a sprint, a marathon is different than a half marathon and so on. Will be considering over the next few weeks or months whether to do a HIM or an olympic for my spring tri. The advantage to doing the olympic again is that I could use what I learned last spring.

Once again you're coming to the right conclusion. About the marathon, everybody has heard that it is a 10K race with a 20 mile warmup, about the "wall", etc., but there's a difference between hearing it than KNOWING it. Now that knowledge will help you decide wether to try to hit that one split perfectly or ease it up the hill, sacrifice thirty seconds but run the rest, etc.

The "listen to your body" rule applies in a critical way when the event is an ultra endurance. Your first twenty miles were superb, paced incredibly well, so I would say that your "powered up the hill to hit my mile split" was maybe the culprit. That hill happens to be in the wrong spot too. Mile 21 is what all runners call the graveyard, when your body starts to shut down because of depletion, lactic acid buildup, etc.

White Rock marathon has an arch at mile 20 that says "START", identical to the one at the actual start of the race. Nothing more true than that, now this is something you know first hand.

Welcome to the Club, you made a wonderful entry.

I think I have frequently trapped myself in stepping up distances due to wanting to always beat a past time.  Instead of looking at things as unique experiences I consistently live in past performances and this concept that I have to master (whatever that means?) that race and best all previous times.

Chris:

How do you think the Hanson's plan was not that you've have finished your first marathon.  If I recall it tops out at a 16 mile run.  If I'm correct, do you wish you had done the typical 20 miler?

Again, you ran an great race, especially for your first full.

Not really sure Mitch. Not enough data. One thing the Hanson plan did do for me is that I was able to actually start. A lot of people train for a marathon and never start because of an injury. I needed to take off a week because of shin splints, but that was probably caused by racing the day before a 16 miler. (That week may have been important. It was the highest mileage week, four weeks out, and included one out of only four "long" runs of 15 or 16 miles. So I skipped 25% of my long runs).

The Hanson plan I followed was me averaging the mileage from their beginner plan and their advanced plan on their website. The two plans were pretty close toward the end, but pretty far apart at the beginning. So basically, while I was doing the weekly mileages associated with their advanced plan toward the end (except for that one week), I was going into the marathon with fewer weeks of high mileage running than their free advanced plan. I don't think the beginner plan (or the hybrid I followed) was meant for people trying for fast times. The beginner plan was probably designed just to get you across the line. So I don't think it's fair to blame the Hanson method because their beginner plan didn't have me BQ.

But who knows? Next time I probably will increase the mileage on the long runs.

Hey coach E, I'm actually feeling good and am totally ready for the challenge!  It will be interesting to see how my triathlon fitness carries over to the marathon as I compare myself to other friends that have only been training for the marathon for a long time.

Thanks for all of your support and congratulations guys!

Chris, great job on the marathon.  Wow, I hate it when they stick those hills in at the wrong place.

Today was recovery day.  I slept late, had a deep tissue massage and took a nap. My mentor says I get stronger during recovery Innocent My calves and ankles still hurt.  And my left knee hurts just to the left of the kneecap.  I iced it yesterday.  Tonight I'm doing the epsom salts bath.  Now I'm going to recovery walk around Town Lake with no Garmin!

Chris, I owe you pics from Austin and Rockwall.  I'll get to them this week, I promise.

I'm pondering what to train for next.  Half marathon, another Olympic, half-iron, or back to sprints . . .  Any suggestions?
