Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Karen - excellent job of staying strong! Sounds like a tough day!! Scott- pretty funny picture!
I actually prefer a handheld over the fuel belt - I feel like I get hip/lower back pain with longer distances with the fuel belt. If I am running around town, I will put out water bottles in different friends mailboxes so I don't have to carry anything!!LOL
Can you give me your thoughts on this: When I ride in aero, my heart rate always goes up 5-8bpm, often bringing it above the zone I want to be in. If I sit up on the horns, it goes back down. I find this consistently. What could be the reason for this? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I cannot stand having a fuel belt on. But, I do run with a hand held. I've pretty much always ran with a bottle of water or gatorade, so it just seems normal to me. First IM I did not carry one, and I regretted it. Second IM I did carry one, it worked out great. I would drink whenever I wanted, and as it got low I could fill it back up/add ice at the aid stations. But I also didn't have to stop at all the aid stations which was nice. It's just what you get used to. |

If I sit up on the horns, it goes back down. I find this consistently. What could be the reason for this? How agressive is your fit? The more agressive the fit, the more you're going to compress your diaphram area and make breathing a bit more of an effort thus the higher HR. Or that's my theory anyway. I find sliding forward on the saddle and rounding out my mid/lower back eases this. |

I find that I have the same problem when I ride in aero, and I just assumed that it was because it's new to me and I haven't developed those muscles yet so I'm working harder. I am curious to hear the answer to your question. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For the HM distance I like to carry a hand-held flask with gels and waters premixed. The strap is so tight on my hand that I don't even notice it's there. I grab water at the aid stations. I will do the same with the run portion of my HIM. I don't know what I would do for a 26.2 or IM. I HATE fuel belts. I get really serious when I'm in pain (tunnel vision stuff). If that guy chased me down in that devil suit, I would probably want to punch him (but in reality I would ignore him and keep running). I know, I know, I have no sense of humor. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So today became and off day for me unless some miracle happens and I can get to the pool later. I went to get my googles out of my bag that I used for transition and they were not there! I know I threw them down on my towel before I went on the bike ride but now I don't remember putting them in my bag and I double checked the ground before I took everything out of transition. Maybe my goggles were similar to the people next to me and they accidentally picked them up. Luckily they were nothing to expensive. Hopefully they serve them well So I was thinking I can swap my bike day tomorrow for the swim today but that would put swim days back to back. I can only go on Tuesday and Thursdays because I am not a member and my Master's meets on those and every other Friday evening. What would ya'll do? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a quick question for you all. I was about to sign up for Culpepper International however they gave me the option of age group or novice. The novice group is for first timers. They are the last wave in the OWS to help you out by not being crushed by the age groupers. If you had this opportunity what would you do. Just dive in and get used to OWS madness of age groups or do the novice? Thanks! |

Depends on your race experience. As a race director I know USTA is telling us to start a novice swim wave to make peopel more comforatble. As people are drowning from panic attacks not heart attacks. At A 1/2 IM I did last year the race had a novice wave. the guy who took 5th overall swam in that to aviod the congestion. I don't know if thats fair either. Byt that chip timing for you. |

to ease into OWS its not a bad idea. you should be more comfortable and hopefully there will be less contact. But someday you will have to step into the MOSH PIT!! |

At Niantic Bay last year, my AG was the first wave, and within the first 100 yards or so, I got kicked inthe head and goggles went flying. I had to swim the whole course with no goggles and kept my head above water. That SUCKED |

The area really doesn't qualify as any of the three so I can't figure out if it's hip flexors, part of the gluts....If I wasn't so close to my A race I'd probably take a few extra days off but on the other hand it's not painful and isn't impacting my performance. A friend of mine is a certified massage therapist and a kinesio tape certified and if I think your saying where I think it is then there are 6 muscles that run from your hip/buttocks/hamstring. I had a similar pain but perhaps a little lower and she said that it can happen to anyone of those muscles so it may be one of those? She massaged mine and I felt a lot better afterwards. Good luck and hope it doesn't turn serious. You can always come down to VA and I can point you her way ![]() That does sound right. Do you happen to know the name of the muscle grouping? Is it just tied into the glutius medius? Thanks for your help. If I was closer to VA I might take you up on that! Sent you a PM with all the info she sent me. It was kinda long to post here but if anyone else wants the info I can post. |

I didn't have swollen eyes, but my upper arms/shoulders were bruised. A couple of my friends said the same thing, their arms were sore and bruised. Those people were brutal! That swim kind of freaked me out, and I'm pretty comfortable in the water. You should do it! Funny - I've only done 2 tris since Wisconsin. One was a time trial start, so little contact. The other was Sunday, and was a mass start. But with only 40ish people, and us spread out amongst the shore line, I never had contact with anyone. It was great. |

Bryan I had great luck this past weekend with a 24 oz bottle with 8 Hammer gel and the rest water. it got me through a 4.5 hour ride with 4500 ft of climbing. The only solid I ate was a Bonk Breaker bar 1/2 at 1hr the other 1/2 at 3 hours. I Drank Perform the first 2 hours and Gatorade the last 2 hours because I had to refuel at the local store. The Gel bottle was awesome plus it was a new drink flavor. Montana Hucklebeery was a much different drink taste then Perform. Nice change!! Thanks for the advice. This weekend I a going to try a Roctane Bottle and see how that works. |
