Warren, sorry you broke your nose.

I guess I missed a post about a fight, got to go find it...lol

Thanks, and in the interest of full disclosure the nose was actually after the race - I won't go into details since it defies description on the stupidity/dork scale,

Tony - Your a beast. From what I hear IMMT is a great race and the bike course isn't that bad. Just one big climb that you have to do on each loop.  Plus they have poutine and actual beer after.

Derek I saw the pics on facebook of the buckets of ice cold beer that they have at IMMT. I'd say that is my kind of race and finish! My friend who I train with has done IMMT so that'll definitely help and that one big climb I believe is a 17.5% grade climb which as you know you have to do it twice. That one makes me a little nervous to say the least. All the more reason to continue to lobby for that power meter next season.

That's good to hear and I've only heard good stuff about IMMT. The course has some tough climbs and a few fast descents and you are right the run is done partly on the old railway tracks which they turned into a trail. Looking forward to it and general registration sold out in less than 4 hours, wow that was fast.

Wow, even for us New Englanders that's some nice cool race season weather! Was it the heat or the humidity?

We had our tri club meeting and a guy raced this bike race. He finished in 32 day I think with the winner finishing in 14. it is a mountain bike course and you carry your supplies with you, tent, clothes food etc. It is over 2,000 miiles and part of the way you are pushihg your bike...sound like fun for Jeff...lol

He just showed pics and talked but did not go into details of how to pack, waht he ate etc which is what I wanted to hear. He did say he lost 40 lbs. he did show pics os tents and they tried to put them under trees at night to keep the dew off because of the extra weight of the water. He loved it when he came to a town to get a motel and shower.

That seems like it would be great running weather but that could be a little deceiving with the humidity being that high. I can see where that could become a sweatfest especially if you don't normally experience the high temps. I understand Will, Jenn and Karl probably dream about this type of weather for a run.

Karl that actually sounds a more extreme than the RAAM, Race Across America bike race where they race coast to coast. This is defintiely hardcore.

I thought you would get a kick out of it!

I usually run when it's cloudy/foggy with temps in the 40s or 50s and humidity in the 90s to 100% because of the fog.  (And we all run in tank tops and shorts in those conditions.)  I think it was the sun beating down on me in combination with the humidity (and "hot" temp) that wiped me out.

When I was on vacation in July, one of my runs was sunny, 94 degrees and 7% humidity!  That run didn't feel as bad as yesterday's death march!

Humidity can sure kick you in the rear.

Yes, the Vinegar appeared to work for me too...but the problem is my stuff always smells fresh after washing, but 20-30 minutes in to a sweaty workout I start to smell the skank again...the problem is that I don't generate this odor...I don't have body odor issues, so it's not coming from me. It's coming from the clothes (usually my bike shorts).

So when you say it works "until the next time", I think you are experiencing the return of the skank like me.
I will elaborate more in a follow up post.

Jeff....I did the cloth diaper thing.  When I would wash the diapers, I would add baking soda (about 1/2 cup) to the water.  Stir it around with your hand to get it nice and mixed up BEFORE adding soap and clothes.  I'd put about 1/2 cup of vinegar in a little downey ball thing and throw it in, too.  I would always do a second rinse to make sure all of the vinegar was washed out.

Here is what I believe is happening when the 'skank' sets in to a piece of clothing.

First, a little research (Wikipedia, mayo clinic, other online sources) tells us that sweat doesn't smell. There are billions of friendly bacteria on our skin that feed on our sweat. Their digestive process gives off the body odor smell. In short, they eat, they poop! That's what smells bad.
These bacteria can never be eliminated from our skin, nor should they. They do good for us. but if you have a particularly bad problem with under arm odor for instance, try washing your arm pits thoroughly with anit-bacterial hand sanitizer some morning. By killing most of these bacteria under your arm pits you may find that you have a much less odiferous day.

As for the skank that takes up residence in our shoes, or our shorts, shirts...what I believe has happened in these cases is that through use and probably mishandling...a colony of our skin bacteria have taken up residence in the fabric. At some point we probably left the article sweaty long enough for the bacteria to grow to enormous levels.
These friendly bacteria are VERY, VERY robust and washing our clothes, even in hot water, even with vinegar and baking soda, and even with bleach does not kill them.
We can simply wash the items and they smell good, but that's because we've removed all of the sweat and the living bacteria are not eating, therefore not excreting the byproducts. We think they are clean.
Why won't bleach kill them? Well, in theory it should. Maybe it would if we got the concentration high enough. But adding a 1/4 cup to 10 gallons of water in the washing machine doesn't appear to be enough.

So as soon as we press these clothing items back in to service, these latent bacteria are served a fresh meal of sweat and the odor begins quickly.

I may be more prone to this than most of you because all of my weekday workouts are indoors so there is poor evaporation and a lot of sweat.

What promising 'solution' have I found this time?

Get your hazmat suits ready....bleach and ammonia. You may know that when these are combined full strength there is a nasty foaming reaction that generates heat and puts off a caustic gas that can harm you. So do not ever mix these 2 directly!

If doing a load of laundry, load your washer, allow it to fill with HOT water and detergent as normal but leave the lid open so it won't begin the cycle.
Once it's full pour in 1-2 cups of bleach, then separately pour in the same amount of ammonia. Then close the lid to allow the cycle to go and leave the laundry room and don't come back until the load is done!
If you need to remove the odor from something that can't be put in the washer...I haven't tried this, but it might work...take the item(s) outside and with 2 spray bottles (one filled with bleach, the other filled with ammonia), spray down the item(s) with ammonia until all surfaces are good and soaked. Then spray the same with the bleach solution. Be careful regarding the fumes. If you feel your throat or lungs burning, take a break and/or move upwind.

How much descripition are you looking for, size, shape, lol.  Its pretty much all bad.  Gloves are the worst, your hands stink after.  They have sports stores here that take all your gear and place it in machine and it comes out smelling great.  Apparently.  Ive never done it as I refuse to pay for something that will stink again after a week or so.  But if I could find a way to get my under amrour, towels, socks etc. smelling good enough that I could wear them again in public without getting looks then I could live with that.

Well, can your gloves survive a trip through the washing machine? I know they are expensive and you may not want to subject them to that. So a soaking in the sink with my 'recipe' should suffice.
Once you kill off the bacteria inside, you can then control the return of the odor if you can get them dry quickly after each use.

Your other items can be done in the washing machine which is much easier. And as I said above, I think that once the bacterial colony in these items is killed, the return to stink won't just happen during the next use, but would take time to happen and could be avoided if everything that gets sweaty is allowed to dry fully after use.
But getting gloves dry after a sweaty workout isn't easy! However, if you get one of these, your glove problems should be solved....

Interesting run this morning.

First off, I did 45 minutes on the bike in spin class...intensity wasn't too high.

Then I did a 5 mile run on the t-mill.
My opening warmup mile was at 9:13 pace and my HR was only at 118 at the end of that mile.
Then I sped it up to 8:34 pace. By the end of my 5 mile run, my average HR for the duration was 123.

That's not good or bad. It's just curious. It's not always true that a low HR means anything great. Especially since my max HR may only be 170.

I would have picked up the pace and put myself around 140bpm, but running faster hurts my Achilles and in the interest of finishing out my season, I need to keep things slow.

Ok, So Im looking for some input.  This weekend is our local marathon weekend and last year I ran the 10k.  Having been my first 10k race in some time and only having gotten of the couch two months before I was pretty happy with my time of 50:4X.  Im trying to decide between running the 10k (to see how much I've improved), running the 5k which is the night before the other races, or not racing at all and doing a long bike and a long run each day as I have my next tri coming up on Sept. 8th.

Thoughts?

Derek, have the best of both worlds, can you ride your bike to the 10K race? A few months back I rode 34 miles to one and PR'ed the race, use it as a brick....then if you PR, you'll be so HAPPY!

lol,  It would be a short ride, the start line is actually about a two minute walk from my house.  I would still get a ride in on Sat if I did the 10k on Sunday.

Jeff, sounds like a great theory. I will give that a try.

I heard a podcast about this problem, and some guy who runs a company which sells commercial products to eliminate odors (who knew?) was on the show. They apparently specialized on pet odor issues and expanded to other things. Their products kill and/or absorb the organic matter which causes the odors.

He gave the show hosts a demo sports version with some sort of bag to hold the clothes. It was an air borne "bomb" type product, like a fogger. They put the smelly stuff in the bag, released the product, and they said it worked great.

I immediately thought about using this product for my hockey gloves, which are nasty beyond description. Unfortunately, the podcast was a few years old and it looks like the company never actually made the sports product. The hope was that a consumer version would be productized and marketed to sports types. Here's the company: http://www.goshproducts.com/
