I spent the weekend shooting and watching the philadelphia international cycling championship, lot of big pro tour teams were here racing 156 miles through philly. photos will be up tonight! That is so awesome! Yeah, I was watching on Versus and I was getting tired watching those guys putting the hammer down! |

HAHAHA...I can laugh at your swimming time only because it was a couple seconds FASTER than my pace in my first tri. Congrats |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff- Awesome job. I posted a comment under you're race report. Stop stressing out about your swimming and saying it's so bad, because your time is faster than mine was. You're making me look bad. ![]() |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You guys/girls are nice. And, I may be looking at this all wrong. But, I'd give up some time for some endurance (crawl) RIGHT NOW. I'm headed to Miami for the rest of the week, leaving in the AM. Our SE sales rep is a triathlete (HIM/OLY dist.) and the house we have rented has a pool. FREE LESSONS!...lol I know him, well. He's already scoped us out a pool, somewhere, to use (25 or 50yd/m). And that we'll do. I hope to come back home.....and it take a few days for the prune-fingers to subside. All I'm gonna do is Swim/work/run. Wait.....that trio sucks worse than what I'm CURRENTLY doing! Edited by nc452010 2010-06-07 6:49 PM |

![]() Jeff...you are long overdue for a break through. When it does happen, it's like the flood gates opening. You don't get slower...but all of a sudden you feel like you can go all day. Don't worry about it so much, and just let it happen. I actually think you're trying too hard when it comes to swimming. My breakthrough happended when I started to relax. All the muscle tension from trying to swim perfect was what was holding me back. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff great job on your first tri! I know you are stressing about your swim but you will progress and get faster as you keep at it. You had awesome bike, run and you had pretty fast transition times, that's free time right there. My first tri I had EPIC T1 and T2 times....like a 6:45 T1 and a 3:00 T2. ![]() Anyways, nice RR and congrats. |

No laughing at my swimming woes. Sounds like a good race to me! A nice showing for your first race ever. I am hoping to place in the type of percentages you placed. We will see this weekend. I am starting to get real antsy to get mine going. My wife thinks I am not prepared well enough because I haven't done all 3 disciplines in one day. I think I am as prepared as well as I can be. The only thing that concerns me is my nutrition during the race. Not having done a Tri before either I want to make sure I am able to finish well without crashing physically. |

I know you have done several half marathons, but have you done a full? I found it's actually quite similar to how you would handle nutrition for a full marathon. The details might be different, but the idea is the same. For my Oly, I did a gel and endurolytes 10 mintues into the bike (45 min overall), another gel 10 minutes before the bike was over (85 min overall), then my last gel and endurolytes 3 miles into the run (125 min overall). Water on the bike, gatorade and water during the run. |

I've seen several posts from more experienced BT members that say you don't have to do all 3 disciplines in a day in order to have a successful 1st tri. I know I never did, and believe me if I'm capable of finishing a tri- you're more than capable of rocking one and placing well. My mom said the same thing to me about never practicing all 3 in one day. Didn't realize how concerned she was until after my race. Her first comment on hearing I finished was "Oh, thank God. Your father and I thought you were gonna drown during the swim." Glad she has so much faith in me ![]() Good luck! Sure the guys in this group will be giving you some great advice on the nutrition. I, as usual, I'm useless in this capacity. But I'm cheering for you. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() dirk you deff dont need to do three in one day. really the only reason i and many others do 2 or 3 per day is simply to fit all the workouts in. you have been training well for a while now, it should be a blast! |

The only thing that concerns me is my nutrition during the race. Not having done a Tri before either I want to make sure I am able to finish well without crashing physically. I think doing all three is a day isn't worth the logistical problems it would have (at least for me), and it'd really only be for mental peace of mind (again for me). I thought about doing it, but after my first tri and doing all three in a row, I never saw the need to train like that. Honestly, when I do more than one in a day now, I try to plan as much rest in between as possible to NOT feel the previous workout. Nutrition is more a personal thing. I've seen 1.5-2 cal/lb/hr on the bike and 1-1.5 cal/lb/hr on the run as guidelines (though that might be for longer than Olympic races). I've found I tend to prefer the lower end of those ranges. In my last 2 olympics, I did one gel near the end of the bike and water. The first run I did with just Heed from the first few aid stations then water on the run (I generally skip the last 1-2 aid stations) and the second I did a gel about 2.5 miles in, along with the Heed then water then nothing at the aid stations. I had a Gu on both runs and only planned to take if I felt I'd need it (the second bike was a lot harder, hence ate the Gu on the run). The guidelines will get you close, but the only way to know for sure is have try it during training. If you don't have time to test, just bring extra gels or bars or w/e you're gonna eat (and make sure you've eaten it without problems while training before) - not eating something is much better than running out. I've never done electrolyte pills or anything like that, never bought into it preventing cramping or w/e it does and never had an issue to make me think I needed it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Everyone, thanks for the encouragement and advice. I have told my wife I didn't need to do all 3 in one day but she remembers a hard training day in Oct or Nov where I rode 30+ miles and ran 8-ish and I was near total exhaustion at the end of the day. This was probably one of my first 30+ mile rides but my running was normal long run for the time. Since that time I have run longer (10 mile long runs) and ridden farther (4-42 milers) and have not had problems. I feel confident I will complete the race and perform well, but I want to go as hard as I can too. I am hoping for a high AG placing percentage like Jeff had. I have done well in my running races by almost every race placing in the top 1/3 overall and top 10% of AG, but this will probably be different. J, I have never run a marathon, but that is actually my "A" race this year (MCM in Oct.). I really haven't thought much about nutrition for that race but I will use your thoughts about fueling for this weekends Oly. Also like Joe said I will have extra fuel and take as required and I will not use anything I have not used during some hard training sessions. For this race I believe I am physically prepared, its the mental aspects that I will probably struggle with. Things like how hard should I swim? Should I push hard on the bike? And will I have anything left for the run if I push hard on the bike? These are the types of things I am thinking about. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() I'm sure you'll do fine. FYI, I also carried an extra gel in my bento box just in case. You never know if you may drop one while riding. It's not like you're going to stop and pick it up. The extra ounce of weight cost me .015 seconds. =) Your nutrition should largely be dictated by your training. You're going to be going harder, so you increase the frequency just a tad bit. Normally during training, I take a gel every 60 minutes (If I'm going more than 2 hours). So for my Oly and my marathon, I tried to take a gel every 45 minutes...which was more than enough. Think of what you do during your long training sessions and base it off of that. Not everyone needs a lot of calories...in fact, some people can't handle taking in too many calories while racing or training. |

![]() got back on the trainer tonight for the first workout since the crash. The worst parts of my road rash are starting to heal up, and while still fresh and pink, are no longer bleeding oozing puss like fluid. The sweat didn't bother me, and showering isn't nearly as bad. I should be back on the road this weekend, and running and swimming next week. The only reason I won't run this is because of the constant arm flexing and stretching of the skin when swinging my arms. That and my shoulder is still a bit stiff...but the range of motion is getting better by the day. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I remember some people here talking about excessive drinking...I need a pity party right now. Started the softball season last night, which is really just an excuse to get drunk on a weeknight (though I grew up playing baseball and love it). Then the thing to do is go to a bar and play the team you just played in softball in flip cup, then argue about whether winning flip cup or softball is the bigger deal. I'm happy to report my flip cup skillz are still there, but my drinking skillz are not. Poweraid sent everyone who signed up for Rhode Island 70.3 a case of their new Ironman sports drink and I can now attest that it seems to help hangovers, though it still feels like my head met a two by four and lost. Now I just gotta slouch down at my computer, throw a random document up on the screen I can pretend to be reading and zone out for awhile... Dirk - Its your first race, and I know its tough to do, but don't sweat the details on this one - just race. Whatever you do, you probably won't execute a perfect race, but you will learn from the things you do wrong. Then you go back for the second or third and know how to do it, and your times will improve with experience. Bt dubs - your body is smart, it will tell you how hard to go if you listen to it and race by feel. I think you'll be amazed at what your body can do in a race when its rested and ready to go. My only advice on strategy on the swim is that the race is not won or lost there, so save your energy for the bike/run. To me, the perfect scenerio is I get on the bike and feel like the race is starting then, i.e. I don't feel like I just swam at all. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joe- Good to know that the game of flip cup is alive and well. 10 years ago, I was a flip cup champion ![]() . J- Glad to hear the wounds are healing, but I agree with Jonathan- I need to see some pics. David- I really like the B&W with the brick bridge & the early morning shots on the water. Did a little brick this morning. 11 mile bike, 2 mile run. I'm loving this morning workout thing. Now that I'm not working during the summer, I don't feel so worn out and rushed in the morning. Too bad this only lasts a couple months. I'm currently trying to organize our trip to CA for my next tri in July. We wanted to take the kids to Legoland (heard it was good for little kids), and turns out there is a sprint tri in the same city (Carlsbad). I've been liking the OWS I've been doing in the Lake & am really excited to try an ocean swim. So I think it should workout if we did the park on Sat and then my tri on Sun morning & maybe hangout at the beach the rest of Sun. Two endurance events in one weekend (come on- taking 3 kids under 5 to Legoland should count as an endurance event, it'll prob take more out of me than the tri ![]() |

![]() I'll get some pics up this weekend. I have some from that day, and some from today now that it's healing. I'll show some from Saturday where hopefully it'll be better. I don't know, but to me it doesn't look nearly as bad as it felt. I suppose road rash sucks becuase it shaves off the top layer where all the nerve endings are. |

![]() also going to try and do my FTP test today. Question...for those that ride on the trainer a lot...do you wash your bike after your done. I noticed how much I sweat on my bike while on the trainer and I assume all that sweat can't be good. I just did a quick hose down and towel off last night. |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i really only wash my bike like two or three times a year (i know, not ideal). on the trainer i have about 3 fans going and a towel so not really an issue. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() yeah...I think I need more fan action. I suppose you need to simulate the 20 mph breeze you naturally get when riding. |

I suppose you need to simulate the 20 mph breeze you naturally get when riding. I DEF need more fan action when on the Drainer! But I won't have to be on it until the weather breaks cold again, I hope. I usually only have a ceiling fan going but it does little for comfort. I have lost up to 4 lbs on some of my harder trainer rides from sweat. |
