I just signed up for a half marathon in December. so I guess I just pretty much defined my fall training.  I won't do a HIM this fall (was considering Rev3 Anderson -- maybe I'll do the Olympic instead, though).  Jamie, I think maybe you're doing Rev3 -- is that right?

Our week here at the beach is almost over.  It has been much less stressful than in past years.  I didn't get in as much training as I would have liked (maybe because of the lack of stress?), but not too bad.  OWS has been sort of a bust -- I always forget that I really don't like swimming in the ocean and plan more than I can really take.  I'll try to get in a bit more tomorrow.

All the talk about the Fall reminded me that if I want to try the Richmond Marathon again this year I needed to start the training plan soon... well, I pulled up the spreadsheet from last year and realized I was supposed to start the training this past Monday.  Hmmm... guess I'll have to make this decision sooner rather than later.  Think I'll sleep on it.

Yeah, Nate and I are both going to do the Rev3 Oly in Anderson. I'm also planning on running the local Spinxfest HM a couple of weeks after.

Had a good but tough bike workout this morning followed by a brick shuffle.  Headed to the beach for the weekend. Will check in later!

Hope everyone has a great weekend. We're out of town for the weekend with friends. Luckily two of those friends are also triathletes! Planning on a few fun workouts and a little drinking in between.

Enjoy the weekend Randy and Rene!

Anybody racing?  I almost hope not, given the heat...

We head back home tomorrow morning.  I just did a pretty good bike/run brick.  I just stuffed my belly, so OWS is probably not going to happen, which is fine by me.

Long run and long bike this weekend, probably in that order.  What have others got going on?

Good luck at the race, hope you get your PR...and don't forget to have fun!

I got my longest swim workout ever in this morning, 50 laps in the pool, which is good since I haven't gotten a good pool workout in awhile. Also got a good ride in on the bike. I have a run scheduled for the morning, that's about it for me this weekend. Well, that and watching the Olympics.

Hey all,

Sorry for the delay of responses. Had a great train-cation in Iowa this past weekend, felt really good to bike and run in new surroundings. Especially since there is a great 40 mile bike path that runs right near my g/f's grandparents house. It definitely was different training in the rolling hills that Iowa has, a great precursor to Augusta 70.3.

Randy-I am sorry to hear about Augusta. I happened to get a text and a call from my mom (yes, my mom) who is 'friends' with Ironman on Facebook (again...yes, my mom). Essentially, the FB status stated that only 13 spots were left. Luckily, I could finally get signed up via my phone (it only took about 4-5 attempts). I would have been devastated, and had to really assess my final training segments leading to IMFL, as I was going to use Augusta 70.3 as a dress rehearsal of sorts. I have a good friend who did not get into Augusta and he is rather devastated about not being to get in.

Glad to hear everyone is getting some solid training in. Skipping the workout this AM in the hotel, in hopes of getting home in time to knock it out on my home turf, and not on a mediocre hotel treadmill.

Nice easy spin in a little bit to loosen up my legs for tomorrows tri. Other than that nothing much going on ... oh I have to complain about something ...

TV Networks in the US just suck! I can't believe NBC is putting everything on delay ... what is the point of watching the swim final tonight at 7PM when it actually happens at 1.30pm?!? I know you can watch it live online but it is just not the same ... RANT over!

:-)

Hey group - looking for opinions / advice.

I pulled out last year's marathon training plan and I realized that I don't have the same base I had going in last year.  1st week of training started at 26-30 miles and goes up from there, and this week I did about 18 miles, probably a reasonable amount given my recent training.  I'm also way off last year's training pace right now (due to training, weight, and heat).  So, for the coming weeks I have a few different options as to how I might approach the training and wanted to get any opinions from those of you who have some running experience.  I liked the plan and definitely was running well last fall when I was following the plan and it prepared me well for the marathon despite a couple of other challenges.  What I don't know is how much I can "cheat" when it comes to the 10% increase / week rule of thumb.

So here are my current thoughts as to approachs:

1) HTFU.  Jump in to the plan as best I can, get as close to the training pace as I can and in time I'll catch up. This is predicated on the assumption that past experience allows me to go up to that level without too much risk of injury (not sure if that is accurate assumption).

2) Distance but not pace.  Jump into the plan in terms of distance, but don't worry about the pacing runs until I've got my legs back under me.

3) Split the distance.  Aim for a point 6 or so weeks into the plan and increase mileage from my current amount to the training plan amount between now and then, recognizing that a large jump might do more harm than good.  Again, focus on getting the miles in and don't worry about the pace yet.  Besides, I will be biking and swimming as well, so overall, I'm not as far off if those count a bit toward the overall fitness.

4) Scale back.  Forget the marathon and do the half instead.  Will be easier to keep up the biking and swimming anyway and the risk of injury on the running isn't worth it.  While I'd like to do the marathon and I feel like a need a stretch goal for motivation, aiming for a Fall OLY and a half marathon is plenty.

Thanks in advance,

Stu

P.S.  Yes, the USA coverage of Olympics (at least on the main station) leave much to be desired.  But enjoyed watching the road bike race (yay for the old guy!)

Good luck in the race Michael!

Stu -- can you combine approaches?  If I were in your shoes, I'd jump right into the plan for distance, but not for pace, and if it isn't working out, scale back and do the half.

That's pretty much my approach, now, to IMWI, especially for the run.  I've been doing the distance for now, and I'll worry about pace in a week or so.  Alas, there is no 'half' to scale back to in this case, so I'm 'all in'.

I did an experimental long run this morning -- woke up, ate nothing, and ran 18, eating nothing (but drinking plenty).  I was absolutely shelled by the end (and remain so).  I'm ramping up far too quickly, but it's that or plan to walk the marathon.  Next will be a huge test -- I'm going to try 20 with 10 at goal pace.

So, what are some favorite snack foods and meals from everyone? I just wrapped up my biggest training week yet and I can't get full to save my life. I ran 7 miles this morning, after having a Gu just before, then had a turkey sandwich on a bagel for lunch. I had a bbq sandwich and fries, then a piece of pizza, both from whole foods (I love their bistro) for dinner. But now I just ate a cucumber for a snack I'd like some ideas for foods that will fill up without stopping my heart, both snacks and meals, if anyone has any good recommendations.

Having a great weekend. Rode 50+ miles this morning in the hill country with Tri friend who qualified for Kona this year. While out riding we ran into a rode with some of her Tri friends. One of the guys is a professional triathlete. All of my hard work on the bike must have paid off. Pleased that I could stay with the group on the climbs. Not too shabby for someone whose outdoor ride files only show a max elevation of 2 feet.

Thanks Michael.  Yes, should have mentioned that with any of the approaches the back-up plan would be doing the half :-)  Glad that you're able to be running those kind of distances again... a little over a month to go!!

Veggies fill me up.  Basically, when I don't feel full but cannot resist eating, I try to go for 'bulky' foods, like carrots, and I try to avoid calorie-dense foods, like muffins.
