Having been my first 10k race in some time and only having gotten of the couch two months before I was pretty happy with my time of 50:4X. Im trying to decide between running the 10k (to see how much I've improved), running the 5k which is the night before the other races, or not racing at all and doing a long bike and a long run each day as I have my next tri coming up on Sept. 8th. Thoughts? Racing is fun. Do the bike on Sat but don't kill yourself, and run the 10k. A fast tempo run like that will be a great training day. Warm up for the race with a short ride as well if you want some more bike miles. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Derek I agree with Warren if you're up for racing the 10K go for it. You can still get your bike ride in as well. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by KWDreamun Jeff, how is your heel? Getting better or are your preparing for surgery? My heels are doing decent right now. They have improved steadily since Indy. I don't want a momentary improvement cause me to bypass getting them repaired or else I will be struggling all next year all over again. So I need to prepare for surgeries.... Thanks for asking. |

Thoughts? I understand your indecision. I assume the 10k is Sunday...if you take Saturday easy and race hard on Sunday you will have a new benchmark for the 10k. That's a valuable experiment to use as a way to gauge your current running potential and to use that information to reset all of your target training paces. Of course, you can get that data from racing the 5k too, but it may not be as satisfying as knowing exactly how much faster you are in the 10k over the race last year. Depending on how much your training routine depends on the weekend ride/run for the basis of your endurance, it may be very important that you not miss these. But, it will be 2 weeks out from your triathlon...while 2 weeks gives you more than enough time to recover from a super long workout set, how much better will this one upcoming weekend make you before that race? Probably not much...so you may want to race the 10k. It's a judgment call, I don't see one option as being the clear winner. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by JeffY Originally posted by DirkP Dirk, these times of over reaching in our training force the body to adapt....just make sure not to take it too far. I'm sure if you backed off and rested up now that you will have done your body good. If you can safely keep it up another week then good for you. But watch for the warning signs of too much.. Please remind me when exactly you expect to be in TN? My body is screaming at me to relent!! I have ridden 146 miles in 2 day and run 19 miles in three days (Fri. and today) and my legs are shot. It's also a cumulative of the past 2 weeks that's working on me too. I have been wanting to nail some heavy, long bikes for most of the summer and now was the best time for me to get some long rides in. Over the past 15 days I have been trying to keep my cycling as high as I can without taking anything more away from the family stuff going on, and there has been plenty. My 2 weeks' totals are 350+ miles of riding and 60+ miles of running and I've had 3 forced days away from any training at all. Those days have been forced because I had to change brakes and a starter on Laiken's car and took one day off after I demolished myself trying to beat Jeff in Indy. I plan to cook myself for one more week and dial things back only slightly before we head to Florida for a long weekend over the Labor day holiday. I am planning another century+ next Saturday before pulling back to and getting ready to ride with Jeff in TN on the way down to Fla. I figure he's going to trash me on some Tennessee hills so that I never forget my love for the flat lands of northern Indiana. I think I can reach for another week, especially given I haven't been able to do anything the past couple of nights. My legs are really working on me right now but it is a slightly more fatigued feeling than I usually experience during some builds I've done in the past. I feel confident I can get another week out of this regimen before I pull back for a week while in Florida. We will be heading down to Columbia Tn. one week from Thursday (8-29) and plan to finish our trip to Destin on Friday morning. I would love to be able to get a ride in with you if it works out. I'll allow you to abuse me since I'll have some extra time to recover while basking in the Florida sun for 4 days. Of course I will be getting some ocean swimming and running in while there but it will be shorter stuff. What do you think? Can we do an early Friday morning ride? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Originally posted by KWDreamun Dirk, where are you going in FL? Remember it is hurricane season. We will be in Destin again. This time we will be with our youngest daughter, Kyrie. Our older girl cannot make the trip with us because she's moved out and has to pick up as many ours at work as possible. To be honest, Laiken not being able to go is a really big disappointment for myself and Lisa. We had been looking forward to taking the girls down for a couple of months and it was going to be a great trip to share and make memories. I am aware it's hurricane season too. So far I've not heard of anything brewing to ruin our plans but who knows what will happen. _______ We helped Laiken finish her move out today and no training was the order for the day today. I spent last night watching a movie here at our house with her instead of running as planned. I watched the movie with her because she had been asking me to watch it for a while. Now that I've seen it I could have done without it! If any of you were thinking of watch "The Fight Club" don't bother!! The movie was not something I would ever have watched. But, I watched it with her, for her. Now she's getting older and moving into other things and these times aren't going to happen much more. I am really not ready for her to be gone! And I don't really think she is either. |

![]() Just reading through everything this morning and Dirk it occurred to me how we are close in age but you have children moving out while my youngest just started Kindergarten! I'll be old and gray by the time they get to those milestones. My clothes have the stink factor for sure but most of them are black so I don't want to bleach them! I washed a load 2 times the other day then hung everything in the laundry room to dry. Opened the door to the laundry room and the whole room smelled.
Remember my heel that was so sore I froze it? The doc prescribed some Prednisone for me last week and I just took the last one this morning. It feels really good now and has for several days, no pain at all. I want to run but at the same time I don't want to come back to early. What do you think? My back is doing so great I'm actually starting to look for more races before the season wraps here and I'm afraid of losing all my run fitness but I probably already have. The Doc was not my regular and she just said "you might not want to run for a couple weeks". |

I hope you and Jeff have a great ride together as well. I also understand how you feel about the kids. This is my son's last year of high school and my girls have already graduated. They are all pretty much grown up the only problem is none of them look like they are leaving anytime soon lol. Joanne glad to hear you had a great run and good to see you back at it with your training. I've seen that show that you mentioned and I think that is a little too hardcore for me lol. I would last 10 minutes on that show get out alive. Derek good luck and be safe at the 10K this weekend. Sounds like you have a great chance to get your PR. I'd go for it. Dina I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. I'd probably take it easy with the running, maybe you might consider riding the bike a little more. Also glad to hear that you are considering signing up for more races. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the input on the 10k everyone. Not sure if I PR my 10k time which is 47:20, but I should be able to get well under my time for last year at this race. Ill keep everyone updated. Funny story, every three years we have to get a full medical done as a requirment for my job. I got my physical, blood, ekg, etc. done and last week I get a email from our health services department freaking out because my ekg came back with a very low heart rate of 43 bpm. I tried to explain that I swim/bike/run quite a bit and that its most likely due to that. She was pretty skeptical, and was concerned if Im fit for duty or not. So now I have to spend the next 24 hours attached to a bunch of wires to monitor my HR. The nurse who hooked me up looked a little puzzled to see me there as I guess its mostly older people with heart problems who are sent in to wear these. So now I cant do much for the next 24 hours because sweating will cause the leads to come off, and plus its kind of bulky to do anything with anyway. I cant believe they turned down my offer to wear my Garmin for 24 hours and then send them the .gpx file. |

A similar thing happened to my husband when he went to donate blood. They can't do it if your HR is below 50. He was around 43 bpm, too. He told them that next time he'll go run around the block before he goes in. (The lead nurse DID let him donate.) |

Not to derail or hijack - but wheels are a very big $$$/aero advantage upgrade. Do you already have an aero helmet, bike fit/position, clothing, bike setup, etc. all taken care of? Not trying to dissuade a wheel purchase, but just want to get the data out there. Either of those are outstanding wheels. FLO has gotten amazing comments for a very low price, Jonathan has them I think. You could probably get a full set for the cost of either of those two. I won't comment on which wheels to get, but a great option might be to get a front wheel and then build a rear disc for $100 on a standard wheel: http://www.wheelbuilder.com/aero-disc-covers.html Edited by wbayek 2013-08-21 11:27 AM |

That is probably more than I road all of last month Breakthrough ride for me this morning with 40 miles by myself at an average pace of 19.8 mph. The area I was in is completely flat and there was only a 5 mph wind so really ideal conditions. I've never tried to grind it out continuously for that long, it was a mental challenge as much physical. Now that I am done my legs feel fine and I think I probably could have pushed a lot harder at the beginning. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just had a thought on the skank clothing thing.... We use barbercide and cavacide at the salon to disinfect ones blue ones clear so the issue with dark or light clothing would be covered ....maybe this would work? I don't have an issue with skanky smelling cloths or I would try it. You can actually get both at Sally's. |

![]() TRACY - I have the Zipp 404's and love them although I have nothing to compare them to. I found new old stock online and got both front and back for the price of just one. DINA - Good grief, girl! I'm way impressed with your bike mileage and pace. And you say you don't want to do an Ironman!?! ;) Way to go!! I'm opposite of you this week. I got on my bike trainer this morn, rode 11 miles and just wasn't feeling it so hopped off, put on my running shoes and did a run around the block and found my happy place. JOANNE - Good advice for Dirk. Everything's beautiful in it's own time. JENN - I just wanted to write your name with two "N's" correctly here. That's all.

It should make you feel like an ANIMAL!! If you don't feel that way there's something wrong with you. I imagine you are beginning to feel some saddle soreness but it's worth it in the end. You're doing great for the lower volume you had been carrying up to this point. You'll be dialed in quite nicely when your aqua bike comes around. Edited by DirkP 2013-08-21 8:25 PM |
