I'm at work today too.  I thought for sure I was the only sucker in an industry that never sleeps.

KelliD, you can totally physically do a HIM.  Are you looking at doing one in the Ford 70.3 circuit, or more of a local race?  The one I did was a smaller local race and it was a great experience.  Not much in the way of crowd support, but because it was such a small field (only about 150 of us racing) I actually placed in my age group!

I've heard really great things about the 70.3 Lake Placid though... not sure where that race falls in the season?

Newtons1st - 2008-12-31 9:31 AM Yesterday I actually did my normal tread mill run on the indoor track. I actually did 2 easy miles and the calf felt pretty good. It started to feel it around the 2 mile point so I stopped. Basically I get the feeling like the muscle being compressed or like it sweels and there is no room for it to sweel. I now it doesnt sound like much but right now for me it feels like a big step. 2-1/2 months off 1 month of slow treadmill work.

Nice job!  Sometimes taking it easy is the hardest part.

Have you seen a doc about it at all?

I have calf problems as well due to the way my feet land when I run, and have found that the torture device otherwise known as "The Stick" works wonders for keeping really painful knots at bay.

I havent seen a Dr for the reason of I dont want to hear "You strained/pulled it you need to stay off it, now please pay at the front". I figurd I would give it another month and if I still have the issues I will go. I know the typical stubborn guy who wont go see the Dr.

I dont have any knots in it but I did order the sprinter stick yesterday. I also will be getting a deep tissue massage Saturday.

Haha, awesome.  I am fiercely stubborn as well, so I understand.

What do people do for nutritional supplements during training? Does anyone use anything other than your basic vitamins?

Are people believers in the 3/4:1 carb:protein post workout?

Definitely take it slow coming back...don't want to risk further injury.  Have you tried the massage therapy... the rub stick thing.  I do not have one, but others I know that use it - swear by it.  You may want to try an easy warm-up, some stretching, then get into your run, with stretching after as well.  Don't push your stretches to hard, and try and hold for 30 - 60 secs.  You could also try icing it after your runs.  Stick with it and remain patient... you'll be good to go soon!

I take the GNC Mega-men Joint pack vitamins daily.  I also use (and swear by - Endurox R4 Recovery drink mix) following a training/work out session that lasts more than 1 hr.  It really seems to help my muscles recovermuch more quickly and reduces the lactate acid (stiffness/soreness) afterwards.  Those are the only two supplements I regularly use.  I also use Endurolytes on runs and bike rides when its much warmer.  I also use them on really long runs/rides 10+ runs 25+ rides.  Same use with Gu's/gels.

I have the Accelarde drink mix - but it is heavier/thicker than Gatorade and I haven't seen any difference in my performance or recovery when using it as compared to Gatorade.

I use a generic multivitamin if I remember to take it and also Endurox R4.  As Tri_n said it really helps for those longer workouts and I even like the taste of it (lemon-lime) stay away from chocolate/vanilla in my opinion.

During a workout I just alternate gatorade/water. For long bike rides I normally eat fig newtons, easiest 110calories from two cookies I could find My girlfriend on long runs started eating shot bloks and loves them, something for me to try sometime I suppose...

So it sounds like I should try out the Endurox R4.

I take an amino acid supplement everyday and find that my legs don't feel as heavy day after runs.

Everyone have a nice new year's eve....it is snowing really hard here in Boston and putting a damper on things. But I assure you I will nto let that stop me from having a good time tonite. Might just involve some drunken snow angels.

I love shot blocks.  I have a really sensitive stomach (to the point that even gatorade does not good things) and they don't bother me at all.

Plus they're like big tasty blocks of gummy bears.  Who says no to that?

What are Endurolytes?

Like concentrated Gatorade in a pill form.  Helps reduce cramping and such.  Has electrolytes and sodium... take 2 or 3 with water every 45 mins on long rides/runs.

I like the Lemon-lime and the fruit punch flavors of Endurox...blah... I couldn't imagine the chocolate type flavors.  Eventhough I am a fein for chocolate... the texture, etc... nope, not feeling it.

{SHOT BLOCKS} Tried 'em, like 'em... when I get them in race packs I will use them, but I won't typically buy them.  Ohhh how I love me some gummie bears... That is why I run, ride, swim, etc... I enjoy sweets way too much!

Here's where I get mine... http://www.allstarhealth.com/f/endurox_r4.htm

If you can find it anywhere cheaper let us know. Best thing about that place is shipping is cheap, I want to say ~$5 and I normally by 4 of them at a time.

There's just something about them that is so much more pleasant than sucking down a gu or a gel.  Yeck.

The white gummie bears are the best.

Happy New Year everyone! I am just getting back from a trip to Arizona. I have not been on line much so I am just getting caught up. I am ready to get back to a training schedule after having to take a couple of months off b/c of stress fractures. It feels like I am starting over but I am excited to get going. I signed up for a 10k in February and a 1/2 marathon in March. I am hoping to do my first Oly in May.

I'm official now!  Signed up today for my first Tri and join the USAT.  now lets home the gym is open today.  I want to go really bad.

As for nutrition I use Cliff bars, and Gu.  I will drink Muscle Milk after a big workout and after lifting.  I have yet to find a flavor I don't like.  During rides and stuff I drink water.  I have been sipping if at all on water while running to avoid side aches.

Have you picked out an Olympic race that you're interested in yet?

Congrats, there's no motivation equal to actually being signed up for a race! When is the race? What are the distances?

The swim is normally the triathletes nightmare so don't worry too much about your first swim.  The best thing to improve is to get lessons if you can, a masters team normally has people of all abilities but depends on your area and there is no substitute for time in the water!

Train your weakness, race your strength

I was thinking of the Turtle Crawl on Jekyll Island, GA. I hear it is a good race but it is an ocean swim. I've only done one in the ocean and it was tough.
