9 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread This is my first 1/2 and I'm trying to get used to the foods and drinks needed for this distance. I've found power bars and gels that I seem to be able to keep down. I read on the website that Gatorade Endurance will be the sports drink given out during the race. I've heard that is very condense and I want to make sure I can keep that down, so I've been looking for it at all the grocery stores in KC to know avail. Hyvee said they discontinued it. Does anyone know where I can find some in KC. |

New user 6 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread As of last week, the HyVee in Lawrence on 6th sold both the lemon-lime and orange in 1 liter bottles. I have been using both for about the last 3 weeks and haven't had any issues with either. According the Gatorade's website, Cycle City in KCMO sells the lemon-lime in a 50oz canister. Go to "find a store" under "where to buy products", search under both lemon-lime and orange for locations at this website: http://cr.gatorade.com/usen/gatusen.cfm?link=locator&date=20090409 |

Does anyone know where I can find some in KC. I see your question on Gatorade has already been answered. As for the other two. I made the mistake last year in the 70.3 I did and took too much of my own drinks on the bike. I could have easily gotten away with one bottle ready to go and picked up what I needed at the aid stations. That being said, you take whatever bottles with you you want for the start and just know you will be throwing them down on the road as you get close to an aid station. At the aid station, they will give you new drinks, not in you typical bike bottle, but in the kind they sell in stores and convenience stores with the twist open/close caps. For the clothes question, in the 70.3 I did lat year, there were no change tents. That is more of a situation for full IM where you are required to go into a change tent. You will wear what you are racing in under your wetsuit. I do strongly suggest you train as you would race. In other words, if you like to wear your bike shorts and they are ok for you on the run, make sure your feel the same way dripping wet. Besides having your bike shorts dripping wet coming out of the swim, you are likely to douse yourself with water on the course to cool off. You may not like those shorts very much if they don't get rid of the water or just fill up and add weight, rub, etc. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread quadzilla2009 - 2009-04-09 6:47 AM Two other questions I have is where are you supposed to put those bike bottles. Is it best to leave one cage open for when you hit the rest areas instead of taking two of your own squirt bottles with you from home. Are you allowed to throw them to the side of the road otherwise? I usually start with 3 bottles ON my bike (one on the down tube and two behind my seat). Depending on the heat/humidity/etc.... 3 bottles was fine for me. Others need more - you should practice a ride of this distance to see what you will personally require. I like to have all my hydration and nutrition with me at the start, because I'm just not comfortable with the nonstop, fly-by, hand off at the aid stations. I tried it at my last 70.3 and promptly dropped the slick, wet bottle. I need to practice if I expect it to work in a race situation. But yes, you can ditch your from-home bottles, but you won't get them back so make sure it's one you don't care about. The best attire scenario will be triathlon clothing such as a tri suit or tri top + tri shorts. These are designed to go from swim to bike to run with no changing. There is no nudity allowed, and no changing areas, so..... yeah. You kinda have to wear (at least on the bottom) the same thing for the whole race. You will see some people changing into a bike jersey or run shirt, but this will add significant time to your transitions and again, a tri top is designed to get you through the whole race. I would NOT recommend wearing bike shorts. The padding in tri shorts is minimal, but enough to support you on the bike. It is designed to dry out quickly and not be in your way for the run. PS Welcome to BT! |

90 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Guys, They are calling for rain on the training day....but we'll see as things progress throughout the week. I am trying to come up with a Plan B. What about a swim/run? Lawrence has a fantastic Olympic size swimming pool that I can reserve for a couple of hours? It is 5 minutes from the run course. Then we could do a run of the 70.3 course (one-loop)...with dinner/get together afterwards...for you guys of course...I will be working! Maybe I'll stop in for one beer... Just trying to cover our bases...hopefully the forecast will straighten up! I'll send out an eblast on Wednesday with a plan...I am open to suggestions for now though |

I probably won't be too interested if the ride is called off. Which is a shame cause I already made hotel reservations. Fingers crossed. |

As long as it's not storming - have at it! Buncha lightweights.... I kinda agree with this. Unless the conditions are in line with calling off a "race," (hail, lightning, tornado, etc.) why wouldn't we just tough it out and ride in the rain? "Might rain on race day"... Bripod what would EVER make you say that?! |

90 | Subject: RE: Ironman Kansas 70.3 : Official Thread Lisa, Yep the weather reports are looking better...now down to 30% chance of rain. The IMKS crew will be at the park at 1pm on Saturday rain or shine. If athletes want to come out and ride the course and Q/A you are all welcome. We will be signing people up for the half marathon at the training ride...if the weather is an absolute mess on Saturday then we will allow athletes wishing to race for free to show up on race morning and sign up on Sunday. If BT'ers are looking for a good meeting place for post ride dinner/drinks...I would recommend the 23rd Street Brewery. It is about the only place big enough to host a large group...it's a cool place...plus they are a sponsor of IMKS...and will be providing you guys with your post race beer! One important note: The park entrance fee is $4.20. We could have met outside of the park and rode in...but I figured that everyone would want to see the run course/finish/transition area anyways. I am very excited about the new venue! Sad to see the Wakarusa Festival go...but glad it opened the door for us to play! |
