my new bike!
bike
so light!

OK...I think I did alright. I paid $895 for this, got shoes (Diadora) for $50. Clipless pedals included, really nice brakes and wheels.  It feels pretty darn good and is pretty. She's a used bike but I think we can be good friends. I've been practicing clipping and unclipping and I did not work out today. Unstructured vacations can be tough for me but although I didn't workout (and now it's 10:45PM) I can start planning for tomorrow. I can't tell you all how much your support means to me for this upcoming race.  It should be ... er...interesting   You gotta' learn somehow.

I'm really excited to ride the bike...and get the silly sticker off   Although..there is a certain amount of fun to it.  I was thinking about naming 'er my Smitten Western   I'm still nervous to ride and unsure of the shifting and all but that's what this morning's ride will be for...

Also...I swam 300 in less than 5'' this morning. More than a little less...so I'm hoping to kick butt in the swim next weekend right before I fall on my face from my fancy new bike!

Great job with the swim. Great bike porn. Clipless pedals are a wonderful thing. Have a great ride.

I fell when I first got clipless.  But I unclip BOTH feet now when stopping.  Have a fun weekend with it.  I'm going to be trying to get my new TT bike to fit better :/

Nice bike Grace, you will have tons of fun.  I got a new bike tis srping and I love it.  Never really road before with the whole biking shoes and fancy pedals.  So I am a little nervous going inand out of transition areas.  Have fun next weekend and enjoy  yourself and the people who compete with  you.  I found out that there are a tons of cool people at these events.

I have a couple of (quite possibly goofy) technical questions:

Are there two different transition areas usually in a tri or is all your stuff in one place?

Do you lock up your bike or does someone watch all this stuff we spent all of our tax money on while we are competing in different legs of the race...?

If I go to the race by myself what should I do with my keys while I'm racing?

Thanks guys...and just don't give up JWheat....even one small workout/day adds up...

Grace,

Triathlons usually have just one transition area (like 95% of the time).  The race website should specify if there's any question.

And triathlons usually have someone watching over the transition area, though security varies along a wide spectrum.  But they should also have enough insurance that if in the rare event theft occurs, you can get reimbursed.

And for the keys, I always place mine in my transition bag (oops, gave that away )  Others use a wheel well magnetic box type of thing.

Regardless, triathlons are usually very safe places to be.

Good luck!!

My race today had one transition area that only racers with wrist bands could enter into.  I did notice though for this race and my last one, that no one is monitoring people in this area especially after the race.

As for my keys, I go to the races by myself and wear a laynard arond my neck with my car key on it.

I GOT 1ST PLACE IN MY AGE GROUP TOO!!

Terps - you are amazing!!

(somewhat saddened by the implication that I need to get my run volume up to 70+mpw to be competitive in my age group - ha)

Grace ~ sweet ride!  I am very happy for ya, like Scott said - the bike can change your life in so many ways!  And like Al said ~ Nice BT Bike porn
Way to build that confidence and I am excited for your first tri!

I hope y'all had a great weekend... I had very limited internet access over the weekend, but let me just say THANKS to the group for your words of encouragement!  It was a tough race, but I had a great time ~ after it was over

I hope everyone has a great week!  I am not sure how much I will be able to post/inspire or check in this week, but I will do what I can.

You guys are awesome!  Congratulations.  First in age group.  That is so great!

Two 3 hour rides this weekend, one a brick with a 5K ride.  Windy...including a wind advisory due to 50 mph gusts.  Guess who was in it on his TT bike for 41 miles. :/

I have a 7.5 mile run race next Saturday.  Race loosely defined.  I want to finish.  I've done the course twice.  I joined the intermediate entry training group to stretch from 5K to the 7.5 miles.  Got it done!  The idea was if I can do 7.5, then I should pick up speed on a 5K for the sprint tri (my first ever) in June and the the 10K for the Olympic I'm doing in July (my second.)   I'll probably ride the bike there (12 miles) so I can get a brick in on Saturday for my bike coach.

Have  great week.

Great job over the weekend guys. Doing some major work on my plan. Things just didn't lay right. Going back to 3 runs per week and then add from there. diet change also. Too many snacks; good snacks, but too many. Have a great Monday.

Wow, great job on the races!!!  I can tell I am really a rookie here reading these posts .  This weekend was terrible for me as far as working out.  Relatives came into town Friday and we had a double birthday party Saturday and then Sunday was last minute visiting and recovery from Saturday night (mistake!!).  I am so glad to have Monday come and get back in the swing with my swim this morning (even if it was slow).  I am debating doing a tri in July, but it is 2 weeks before my first "scheduled" tri.  I looked at last years times and I think I could do OK (not finish last lol) in my age group.  Iceman I think you are doing this one (evergreen lake July 18th).  I am going to wait for another two weeks, judge my progress and then decide.

Oh, Great bike Grace!!!!

Yes, I will be trying to do the Olympic on July 18 at Evergreen.  It is so great to think I might actually meet someone from here!

Awesome job on the races guys.  Scott - you'll do fine on the upcoming run.

It's finally nice here.  I got in a 8.5 mile run yesterday...so nice to run in shorts and tech top.  It poured on me twice during the run and I couldn't have cared less.  It was just awesome to be outside running in warm temps!

Question to the group:  I developed achilles tendonitis and have been resting the leg.  Feels better now and I'm planning on resuming evening runs Wednesday.  What's the general approach to resuming running after dealing with this?  I.e. slow and steady, cutting distance down by a certain %, or picking up where I left off?  Thanks in advance...

Definitely start slow and reduce distance.  Look online for specific stretches and ensure you warm up slowly and then stretch.  Stretch after as well, don't be afraid to ice.  I've never developed a full case of it but have battled the early signs for the last year.  I don't stretch before the main part of running like I should, but I do stretch after and ice whenver I have pain.  The 10% rule is very important.  Additionally, ensure you have a solid base before getting into speed and hill workouts.

To reiterate what Mitch said at the end: steer clear of hills.  Extension of the heel is what aggravates the Achilles, and that is most commonly brought on by hill work.

Also, don't continue to run if it flares up during the run.  An Achilles injury is not one you can train through very easily.  An obviously, if it continues to be a problem, go see a doc.
