Good luck tomorrow!  Are you doing the Country Music half-marathon?  I did the Rock 'n Roll half marathon in Virginia Beach (run by the same people).  It had about that many people.  It is a lot of fun.  You always have people around to cheer you on.

Make sure to drink lots tomorrow!  And wear sunscreen!!

Yes, I'm doing the half distance (y'all convinced me).  Every picture and every newscast shows everyone shoulder to shoulder for as far as you can see.  Does it ever thin out?

I have a water bottle on a belt I can carry, unless you think I can get enough water on the course.

My race thinned out a little towards the end.

If you are used to carrying a water bottle, you might want to during the race.  I usually use a fuel belt during training, but not during races.  Sometimes I've regretted that - usually when it's hot.

Had the opportunity to go to a free Triathlon Newbies clinic at a LBS, just wish it hadn't been at one 3 hours away and at 7pm.  Oh well, who needs sleep Frown

Still, found the tips worthwhile.  One particularly useful thing she did was she had a transition type bike rack set up and her transition area setup as she does at the race then demonstrated T1 and T2 with explanations.  She also had us change flats, great experience for myself and my 10 year old daughter who went along.

The instructor, who is a USAT coach, mentioned that gels and bars should not be taken with sport drinks, only water.  Thought this was interesting as I had never heard this before.  Any thoughts?

Sorry to have been MIA this week, crazy busy...but sounds like its going around!

I take gels and bars with sports drink pretty regularly.  I think the concern is that it can cause gastro-intestinal distress in some people if they take it with sports drink.  Make sure you try it out ahead of time.

I've found that things like clif shot blocks or gels make my stomach hurt if I take them while I'm running, so I make sure to eat more on the bike and then just drink water and gatorade while running.

I had a race today, but didn't end up finishing.  This was the first time I didn't finish.  Moral of the story: sometimes it's smarter to stop than to keep suffering.

I wrote a race report if you want to check it out:

I had a great workout today...not a race, and short, but oh, so sweet.

I have tried a couple of times over the last several years to go jogging with my husband.  He is 6 inches taller than I am, ran cross country and track in high school, has always been pretty fit between genetics and pretty regular exercise his whole life.  The last attempt I made was last summer and I darn near passed out/vomitted from the exertion in the first 5 minutes...that was the end of the jog (that he did at a nice "easy" pace for me.)

Today we did 5K together, and he was really sweating and breathing (although not as hard as I was) and talking about shortcuts.  I apologized for the slow pace (although my fastest ever at 32min 40 sec), and he said it was perfect...still a challenge, but he didn't burn himself out in the first few minutes!!  He has been so supportive for these last 4 months, picking up my slack around the house and with the kids and dogs, telling me he is proud of what I am doing and how great I am looking (well, better anyways :-)

I was so excited to be able to do this with him!  Sorry for the long winded story, I am just so happy!

Hope you all have a great week!

It's always great to exceed a milestone.  Pretty soon, he will be trying to keep up with you.

Congratulations!

That's great!!  Keep it up and you'll be running faster than him.

When my husband and I run races together, it always turns into a competition.  Friendly, but enough to keep us motivated a little bit more.

Congratulations on what sounds like a great race. It is always nice to have that extra motivation from a loved one. Make sure he knows you appreciate it and keep up the good work!

My May challenge: to make my 3 strength workouts a week.  I think it is strange that I came from a lifting background and the one part of the training I have he hardest time getting myself to do is the strength training.

I haven't decided on a reward yet, maybe I will ask my wife, she is good about figuring out rewards, plus then I don't feel guilty when I spend money on a reward.

Here's what I was thinking for a challenge for our group in May:

Make goals:

1. Swimming and/or biking and/or running - could be time, could be distance, could be something like "learn how to do flip turns"
2. Something outside of training - could be read a book, could be work on some knitting (mine!), could be movie night with the family.  I feel like balance is important, so that's why this is included.

Pick a reward!

What do you get if you finish your goals?  I like to have things to bribe me and keep me motivated, so if I know what I'm working for, it will help.

What do you guys think?

Okay, I'm in and my goals for May are:
1) Training goal: Bike 150 miles, Run 50 miles, Swim 15,000Meters, Strength train 4 hours
2) Personal goal: Spend one-on one time with each of my kids and hubby
Reward: Buy something training related (bike shorts?)

This will be SUPER hard for me unless I stay focused and do my planned workouts. Nothing like a little motivation!!

HELLO EVERYONE!!!
Sorry I've been MIA..
April was a CRAZY!!!  (understatement) month....

I'm back, and hopefully back in my groove (I actually swam at 6am this morning)

I will post some goals for May shortly (within the next day or two)

I'm hoping that tonight I will actually be home and get the time to write out a plan... (dumdadumdum)

I've got a race at the end of the month and haven't done any bricks and this morning was my first day back in the pool in a month and only maybe the fourth time since Jan ro Feb.. UGH!!!  but it felt good...

I'll catch-up with everyone's updates soon...
Can't wait to read Shelly's report from last week... 31K people?   Wow!

Sure hope your race went well, looking forward to reading your race report!!

I just noticed you have done some races with your kids, I am so excited to have my 10 year old start doing some training and tris with me.  Now I am thinking maybe my 6 yr olds could start doing some little things too.  What a great way to spend family time.

All-righty....
I wrote my May plan a few nights ago (pretty generalized) and just blogged it into my log for the month....
Goals...  in accordance with the Challenge forum = swim  16K
Otherwise... I'm guessing I should be able to build my bike up to 40mi (if not more) in preparation for 60-something mi ride on Jun 6th....  I'm also trying to get better about working some bricks in being as that the season is here NOW!!!!
I'd also like to see more 6mi runs in my reg schedule (and not call them "long" runs)

I also need to work on increasing my BT time....
