Right now I have regular pedals. I ride with the ball of my foot untill my legs get sore then I switch to either end of arch near the heel or sometimes the heeel itself for a short while and then switch back to the ball of the foot. It feels good, but is this safe?

Riding with regular pedals is certainly fine and riding at your own comfort level is good, even if it takes some adjustments along the way. The discomfort you may feel in the ball of your foot is probably because your sneakers are bending as you apply pressure with your toes...which is fine. It's typically how we all learned to ride in the first place. I wouldn't say it isn't safe though as long as you're comfortable and confident with the food stroke.

Hopefully the doc appt goes well and you're able to shake the infection.

I think you'll find that the VAST majority of triathletes don't have the "must win" mentality. In a sport, such as ours, where there are so many variables, I think most people go out to accomplish their own goals in a race--it may be to place in their age group or it may be to just get through the run without having to stop at some point. As long as you hold yourself to the standard you set yourself and performed to the best of you're ability, you've won.

And Jeanette, you're completely right about the motivating words. Sometimes I think that my fellow participants offer up the best support on the course. I can't tell you how many times a friendly nod or exchange of words has helped keep me going. It's a great feeling when you're out there and you get a pat on the back and a "Dig Deep, you got this!"

As someone who did ballet for the better part of 18 years and recently sat through her nieces first dance recital...I completely feel your pain!!! I have no idea how my parents did that.

Hopefully it goes by quickly for you!!

RunningJayhawk - 2009-04-24 2:22 PM   How far north are you starting?

I start at North and head north, mostly because I'm more familiar with the north side (I lived in Andersonville for about 3 years). And also because I usually ride on the weekends, and there's a bajillion people on the path at Oak St Beach, Streeterville, Navy Pier, etc.  I've never ridden south of the river. . . mostly because I'm not sure to cross it on my bike.  Usually if I run that way, I get lost and have to take a creepy set of stairs onto the bridge where there are a lot of cars.  Maybe this weekend I'll try venturing south and seeing what the path traffic is like south of the river.

I'll definitely have to check out the path around Northerly Island.  Actually my favorite run is through the museum campus around the Shedd and the Planetarium.  I just haven't ventured to that area on my bike yet.

Which tri club are you with? I'm a member of CTC, but my buddy Jeff is an officer with Element Tri Club. Next time I'm headed to the burbs I'll let you know. We've got a 4-bike bike rack on our car. My thought is the more the merrier! Also, the metra allows something like 3 bikes per car...you just have to call ahead and make reservations. Though that's often a bit of a pain in the arse.

Oh, sweet!  I'm with CTC too.  It's a nice, friendly group.  Yes, definitely let me know if you head out there!  I'm debating on whether to join the CTC ride on Sunday, but it's at 8am, and I have friend's bachelorette party to go to the night before

And I'm not sure, but I thought the Metra rule was that the bike had to be fold-able?  But yeah, the Metra's a bit inconvenient to use on the weekends because the train times are so far between!

I'll be shopping for my wetsuit & clipless pedals tonight!  Then hanging out at a friend's house for dinner, some TV, and maybe a board game.

Have fun at the recital Wink

erin.kelsey - 2009-04-24 12:24 PM Cheryl, just a question, where do you live in Cincinnati? <snip>  Also, what library do you work at?  I am currently getting my masters in library science!  <snip

> but I can down with a nice spring cold, so I'm not sure how much I can exercise this weekend, what a bummer! I'm hoping everything will clear up today and tomorrow I can go for a run or a ride. !

Erin-  I live on the east side of Cincinnati near Eastgate.  I work out east at the Williamsburg branch of the Clermont County Public Library. I've worked for CCPL off/on for 6 years as a youth service specialist - library speak for "You don't have the Masters in Library Science, therefore we can pay you less."  I'll do my degree through University of Kentucky's Distance Learning program once my two littlest ones get a little lower maintenance.

So what's your favorite tri book so far?

Note on the cold: I've seen recommendations on exercising when sick that say if it's above the shoulders go ahead, lower take some time off.   Good luck, feel better!

It can be a little bit tricky your first time, but it's doable. Just follow the running path from oak street beach toward Navy Pier, cut in front of the Navy Pier lawn where the fountain is...cross the street on the other side by the off ramp for Lake Shore Drive, go past the little shack where they sell tickets for the boat tours, run toward lake shore drive on the path (parallel to the water) and at the corner turn left to go up and over the bridge on the sidewalk on the underside of lake shore drive. No stairs involved!! But the further south you go, the less crowded it gets...especially once the marathon groups start training!

I've never done a group ride with CTC because in my mind I'm so slow. My friend Jenn is trying to get my to ride with her and the Spidermonkeys (they leave from Roscoe & Damen area) but I'm not sure about their pace. It sounds like you're not too far from me to be honest...I'm in River North, close to the Portillo's downtown. I think we're going to the next CTC meeting since it's covering nutrition and I'm hoping to sample some infinit before I actually make a flavor choice and buy it.

As far as it being foldable...I have no idea! I'm sure the info is hiding somewhere on the website.

JeanetteJ. - 2009-04-24 12:16 PM  The best feeling is the finish The second best is when a racer or someone watching yells out Kind motivating words to you when you race. The third best feeling is a week after you raced and you can brag to your friends and show them the finishers medal! IT'S ALL GOOD

My first event was a duathlon last month.  It was incredibly hard and I was very discouraged finishing nearly last.  But seeing the finish line was a great feeling.   Even better was hearing my 4 yr old yelling "Go Mommy Go!" and running along with me.  I didn't get a medal but I did get some free bottles of green tea as they were packing up.

Went for a swim today.  It was my last chance for at least a week because of the way our schedules work out.  I finished what I wanted to do, 1600 yds, but it didn't start out so great.  I was rather annoyed by the person who joined my lane and it took several laps to get it out of my head.

So here's a pool etiquette question.  Doesn't it seem polite to tell someone when you're going to share a lane with them?  I always talk to them and ask if I can join in.  That way they know I'm there and we don't risk colliding.  Today, as I'm swimming down the middle of the lane, looking at the bottom of the pool, thinking I was alone, I feel someone go by me.  What do you know someone had started swimming in my lane without saying anything.  I moved over to one side and didn't mind but it really put me off.  She eventually moved over and shared a lane with someone who was going more her speed.  Am I wrong to expect this?

Okay, my rant's over.  On to better things...a sunny weekend with a parade.

Good evening everyone! I'm back from the doc with my diagnosis. I'm so excited because it turns out there is NOTHING wrong with my hip. I have a pulled groin muscle. The doc moved my leg through it's range of motion and couldn't find anything wrong with my hip so he started feeling around on the right side of my groin until he pressed on one part and I let out a yelp of pain.

Turns out the pulled muscle is what's making my right side/hip ache. He gave me some relafen for the pain and is setting me up with a physical therapist. The best thing is that he said that with this kind of injury that it feels like you should be resting and not moving but that movement and stretching will actually help me heal. So I'm cleared to lift and stretch and I can swim and bike as long as I don't feel any pain. Wohoo!

This is such a huge relief because I was worried that I was going to be having chronic hip pain for the foreseeable future. But he said if I follow the orders of the physical therapist that I should be totally healed in a few more weeks.

Totally agree with you. When I get into a lane I wait at the end until the other swimmer makes their way back to the end I'm at and then ask if they want to split the lanes or circle swim. That's strange that the other person just started swimming especially if you were swimming down the middle.

Good morning and happy Saturday everyone!  I'm excited because I went to Mox yesterday and bought a wetsuit, and some biking shoes and clipless pedals Laughing   I'm going back today so they can install the pedals on my bike and teach me how to clip in and out of the pedals.  Haha, I was originally planning on not buying too much gear this season since it's my first one, but I'm a sucker for new toys Tongue out

Barb - thanks for the tip about the bike route.  I'll try going that way on my bike today on my way back to Mox (it'll be the scenic route).  Oh, any they gave me a ton of discounts on my purchases yesterday for being a CTC member.  The membership fee basically just paid for itself!

Yeah, I always ask before jumping in a lane with someone.  It's just common courtesy!  And I also ask whether they want to split the lane do circles.  Otherwise, you'll definitely run the risk of collision!

I guess I have no idea if I'm fast or slow, but I figure the clubs fairly diverse, so I'm sure I'd be able to find people who go at my pace.  Of course, I haven't been on a group ride yet either, so I don't know if that's a fair assumption!  You're right, not too far from each other - I'm actually on the northern edge of the gold coast, just south of Lincoln Park (the actual park. . . sometimes I like to run through the Zoo area if it's too cold to run along the Lake).  I have a friend who lives in the Loop, and we used to always get coffee & lounge/read at the Rock 'n Roll McDonalds right across from that Portillos!  I'm also planning on going to the May meeting - I don't know anything about race-day nutrition, so I'm sure I'll pick up a few pointers!

Good morning everyone! So It's brick day for me and I'm definitely going to get it done, but I need a little advice on the timing of it.

I have a catch in the right side of my neck that's radiating pain and is definitely uncomfortable. I have a good range of motion turning my head, but holding it up is uncomfortable...i.e.: sitting at the computer right now is tough. Trying to decide the better plan of action - go ahead and do my brick now and then go for a sports massage after the workout... or go for the massage first and move the brick to the late afternoon/evening?

That's a tough call.  If it were me I'd take some ibuprofen, maybe even put the heating pad on it for a bit, do the brick and then go for the massage.  If you do the massage first then do the brick you risk it coming back and making the massage a waste of money.  That's just my 2 cents though.

I finished my 5K race this morning and got a new PR!  And even more exciting, my shin didn't bother me at all during the race.  I did a nice slow two mile run just before the race which I think helped.  And the ice, and rest, and lots of stretching I've been doing for the past couple of days.

Just got my hair cut, about to bring my bike in for a tune up, and then off to a chocolate and martini party tonight.  It's shaping up to be a great day.  Oh, and it's sunny and the first day in the 80s this year.  Laughing

Happy Saturday, all!

DenaRae - congrats on your PR.  Great job! --and you can righteously celebrate with chocolate and martini's - sweet!

Calimavs- I'm so glad to hear it wasn't your hip.

Yogachic- can't wait to hear how it goes with your new toys.  The more you write, the more I'm wondering if we are somehow twins, separated at birth.

lghays - about lane etiquette:  I have to confess I don't always ask.  My Y has lane sharing expectations posted on a poolside bulletin board (side/side if 2 people, circles if 3, if all lanes have 3, the guard will open another lane).  I try to catch the swimmer's eye and say something but if they come to the end twice without noticing me, I just start.  Happens about 1/4 of the time that they don't notice, even with my legs hanging in the water and talking!

I have a bike lane ride set up for 8am tomorrow so I swapped in a run today.  I was going to run 1st thing but Niranjan was in a mood so I waited until this afternoon.  I planned a 5K neighborhood run and thought it would take me ~32min.  Fail...

It was hot 80F and very windy.  I totally identify with roadrhino's "windy torture."  I had to cut it to 4.6K (in 36min) and walk/job the last 1/3 because my HR kept pounding in my ears and I started feeling dizzy.  Wow.  I slept well so I'm guessing this was from the heat?  This is making my July/Aug races sound scary.  I was looking forward to them since the lake's will be warm.  Hadn't put 2 and 2 together about the run temp.

Also, I was parched.  How do you do fluids if you don't want to carry a water bottle in your hand?  Also, are there gadgets for carrying cell phones (heads up yogachic - GADGETS).  My running gear has no pockets.

Suddenly I'm remembering why I prefer swimming and skiing.  Moan, moan.  Sorry, guys...

You guys are so busy and an inpsiration to me.  I took the day off today.  My body needed the rest and I have a bit of a cold.  My wife is at work till 9PM so it is just me and the boys. Yes, like a typical Dad I bought a new movie (Bolt) and made grilled cheese sandwichs.  At least we didn't go to McDonald's. Laughing Although I was tempted, a Powerbar saved me.  I think we will go to Grandma and Grandpa's for a visit and then go pick up Mom later.

Enjoy your Saturday folks.

For carrying gels/phone/lip balm, I love my Spi Belt.  I wear it low around my hips and it doesn't bounce a bit.  Recently brought it on my last 13 miler and it was great.

On runs longer than an hour, I bring my Amphipod handheld bottle.  It's really comfortable to hold and fits the shape of my hand well.  Though I'm finding that on my runs longer than 2 hrs, as the weather gets hotter, 20 oz isn't enough.   So I might have to invest in a bottle/belt system.
