So Josh, are you going sub 5 hours at savageman?

(smack talk begins)

I bow to anyone going sub 5 at SM.

There is a race within a race more or less at Savageman.  The big Savage Mountain climb starting at the base of the WALL.

I should throw up a wager and try to win some of the beer back.

I bow to anyone going sub 7....will write a song about you if you are sub 6.

No way I'm taking a wager on the Big Savage climb - that encourages the biggest mistake you can make at this race (attack the hills and then fry on the run).

Everyone knows I'll beat you all with a last minute* pass on the run anyway.

I'd like my song to be written in a minor key, please.

*in Tasr's case, probably more like a pass with 6.2 to go.

WABASH and I plan on doing a test ride on 8/14.  I believe we will get there around 8:30 AM -ish.

As for the hills.. I have yet to figure out how not to blow the legs out in the hills.  I'm sure I'm going to be dying on the run no matter what.

In my defense, that quote from me should read "10 hour epic days", not "10 mile epic days".  Ugh?

Also, I just now have realized that beginnertriathlete only has a SavageMan HIM: Official Thread, and nothing for the Oly.  In fact, in searching through the races the 30.0 isn't even listed.  How does one get a race added and an "Official Thread" started?  Surely there are some folks on beginnertriathlete amongst the 400 or so we have registered so far?

Funny you should say that.  Garrett County strongly endorses SavageMan, but it is a small community and cannot handle the volunteer load needed.  With races on separate days this year we are hoping/relying on competitors and families to help out the day they are not racing.

Unless you're doing the 100.0 and racing both days, consider signing up to volunteer.

What is the "Mandatory Bike Racking" the night before?  My bike has a girls name but I don't want anyone touching her rack.

Seriously, is this the inspection or do we actually leave our bikes at the transition?

Mandatory bike racking is what it sounds like.  You must go through bike inspection and rack your bike in transition the evening before.  This greatly speeds the process and reduces lines on race morning.

Security watches the transition area overnight, so your bike will be safe.

For the 30.0, we encourage folks to pickup packet and rack bikes on Friday evening, but it is not mandatory.  The 30.0 has a later start time of 9:30 on Saturday.

The bike inspection is definitely mandatory and NO joke.  The mechanics will put a little sticker on the bike and you can not rack your bike in transition with out it.

Last year the mechanics were from Contes.  I was watching closely what there were inspecting.  The 3 mechanics I observed were consistent and imo knew what they were doing.  Some of the things they checked; breaks tight and properly aligned, break pad not worn excessively, wheels secured and true, tire condition, crank for looseness, headset for looseness and properly aligned, overall condition and equipment is secured,

It’s no joke, they we failing people.  Part of me wishes mandatory bike inspection was done at every race.  Just because people will learn and it can just be a safe thing.  I do all my own bike maintenance and know what I am doing.  If you have any questions feel free.  I also think you can take you bike to Contes for the inspection as well.

Because you're going to be cold, cold, cold descending into Westernport.  And you don't want to swim through a thick fog bank.

Two years in a row at 8am and we learned our lessons.

This is part of the reason why I purchased a new bike a couple weeks ago.
You and Knyost.. thanks for the info on the racking.  This is my first HIM so I've never racked the night before a race and I didn't want to make any assumptions.

Thought about this but just don't think I can fit it into my time line.  I am driving in solo Sat morning.

I'm going out on Thursday to see the course with a friend who is staying the week in Deep Creek with his family.  There will probably be 3-4 of us riding the course.  Two questions:

1. Are there natural places to fill up water bottles on the course?  It looks like there may be a store of some sort near Otto Lane at mile 35.  Are there water spigots in New Germany State Park?

2. Are these roads save for travel throughout the week or should we expect to see lots of boat or logging traffic hogging the roadway?

And, an unrelated question: I have never done cause-fundraising but thought I might send a message to all my friends about the race and the effort to raise money for the fight against cancer.  Is there a particular page I am supposed to create or other registration or do I just collect funds and bring it to the packet pickup?

I went from a Schwinn Prelude to a Trek 2.3.
