Did some "supermans" tonight.  Great exercise if you suffer from lower back pain.

Honestly I think you are doing the best thing, My bike club has no issues with a tri bike because it averages 16-18 mph. My race team averages 20+ and would not even consider allowing someone with aerobars as we ride in tight groups at very high downhill speeds. Purchasing a bike is difficult when you are spending allot of money, just know that either way you cant go wrong and you will probably want a whole different bike by next year. Sorry but its true!

Supermans have helped me a ton during my longer bike rides when my lower back would get sore. Flexibility and a strong core go a long way to better biking.

well, the girls are not in school this week (most of my workouts are typically while they are in school), and we're trying to get ready for a trip to the mountains this weekend (leaving tomorrow, need to buy food, gloves, a few last minute gifts, and do about 20 loads of laundry), and things are not all blissful around here these days...  I was unable to make time for a workout yesterday (wanted to bike) and don't forsee a bike ride anytime this week.  bummer.  I think the girls may need to watch Elf today while I run on the treadmill.  It's 50 degrees and sunny, and I'll be in the garage on the treadmill.  yeah.

sorry, just wanted to whine a little.

nevergivin - What does everyone have planned for fun, fitness, nutrition this week ?

Fun: sledding, board games, puzzles, and fun with family.  Fitness: I plan on running a few times during vacation, that's it.  Nutrition:  uh, it will not be good...   I will probably only cook dinner, the rest will be left up to others and will most likely not be my usual no sugar/high veggie foods.

nevergivin - Does anyone know what they are getting for Christmas?

I got a new Garmin 305 about a week ago as an early present to myself!  So far, it's really cool.  I like the automatic mile split times and full heartrate data.  I asked for a set of swim fins (my swim teacher suggested I get some) and non-cotton socks, we'll see what shows up.

Strength training

I love lifting   I am running into time issues now. I prefer to work out in the morning but I only have time to do one activity and the local pool is not open until 6:00 am.   Starting in january I think that I will set up, running and biking mornings and swimming and lifting in the evenings.  The pool/gym will have more variety in equipment as well.

As I just got back from visiting family, tomorrow I will back to my regular schedule and I am working except for the stats. I largely eat a raw veggies and high protein so except for some potatoes and stuffing on christmas day, eating will be really clean!

For Christmas, I got my first swim cap and goggles Cool

Heading to my mother-in-laws in northern IL.  Hope to get a couple runs in if the weather is ok.  Plan to visit some bike shops.  Nutrition will be bad.  I'll be in grazing mode.

Went to another LBS today at lunch.  In my price range ($1200 - $1500) the sales person suggested a road bike since that range is the bottom of the line for tri bikes.  He also suggested a road bike because all I have is a mountin bike and tri bikes are unstable since so much of the rider's weight is over the front tire.

I'm not sure I buy his arguments, but he was very nice and said don't hurry.  Come in and test ride as many bikes as I want and they would order anything I wanted.  He also said if I found a good deal on a used bike, to bring it in and they would check it out.

Well things been crazy for me. SO my Daughter comes home from the Army training for Christmas, she drives my 3 week old car about a mile and wrecks it. It is a write off. I was just happy she no one was hurt. So now i get to go car shopping again.

I am looking into a Honda Element because you can get 2 bikes in there without even taking the wheels off and standing them up. Plus no carpet

I will be spending the Holidays at home hoping not to gain any weight.

Half Iron Man Question

I am thinking about steping it up to HIM this year. MY question and concern is the amount of training involved.

I have no problem doing 1.5hrs training during week days and 1.5-2.5 hours at the weekends. What worries me is i may have to do some 5-8hr sessions at the weekends for this??

Its the time away from my family that worries me a bit. I talked to my wife and i think if its no more than 3 5-6 hour sessions it could be do able.

To Recap: How many LONG sessions would i be looking at?

Now to a 240LB guy the Half Iron Man is going to feel like an Iron Man to most people. I normally do 4-5 Triathlons and 2-3 Duathlons in a season but i am thinking about just putting everything into 1 HIM for the season.

Sorry about the car, thats awful and crazy................... hope things get better for you and your daughter. I remember comming home from the military, it was such a culture shock each and every time, its such a different way of life and the instant switch is difficult and overwhelming.
I have an extended cab Silverado, I flip up my rear seats and my bike rolls right in, its a sweet setup. I cant imagine how it feels to have my bike on the roof and forget to remove it as I drive into the garage, I know two people that have done this!

Your long days should build up to a distance that is farther than your race distance. So for a 2000 yard swim,56 mile bike,13 mile run, you will want to build up to a 2500 swim(without stopping),60+ mile bike, 14+mile run. Your typical long bike will take you 3+ hours, I did my long stuff on the weekends and did my 1-1.5 hour workouts during the week. I tried to get most of my workouts in early, the sooner the better(less time away from my family) and its much cooler tempatures with less traffic. Most weekend workouts my wife and daughter woke up around 8 am and I could have my workouts done around 9 or 10am. Your runs would depend on your pace also, I run 9 min miles, so my half marathon is around 2:15, so for the run you may be looking at 2-3 hours.
Half Ironman is a good event, its more about finishing than racing, so remember the long workouts are called key workouts for a reason, they are what give you the ability to finish and are extremely important workouts. Have you looked at any half Training programs? Taking a look will give you a good idea of scheduling, each program is different and will suit your strengths or weaknesses accordingly, let me know if you need help selecting a program.

Ok, so here is my situation:
I am 311 lbs and have been using a stationary recumbent bike for a few months. I have built up my endurance on it so i can do 1 to 1 1/2 hr rides at 20mph. I got a heart rate monitor and have for several weeks train between 125 and 135 BPM. I want to do the Luray Sprint Tri in Aug, so I plan on hitting the pool next month and start to (very slowly) jog and once it warms up, get an outside bike.
Several questions:
1) What should my HR be for my bike sessions now? (Age 45 and RHR is 85)
2) Right now I just try to keep a steady pace and HR, should I add intervals? And if so, what will they do for me?
3)Should I train differently now? I wanted to lose weight, work on good form and build endurance thru late spring. Sound reasonable?

And one comment:
Happy holidays to everybody, hope you have a fun and safe time.
Thanks.

For now you would make the most progress extending your endurance, I think if you read this program it seems like something you may be able to follow, I highly recommend it. These are some easy to follow intervals and it will give you some structure, structure is important.
 http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=1671

Based on your age you want to stay within HR 122-140, this weekend I will write my second article outlining how to determine accurate heart rate zones.
June should be the latest day to get going on an official sprint training program, they will be more specific at training intensity ranges and rest and frequency. Just remember this, during your first year it is better to do less than to do more and get hurt. Stick to water for all of your workouts, stay away from Gatorade or any carbs while exercising, when your workouts reach the one hour mark start using Zym or Nuun, they are electrolite tablets that you add to water. Any workouts under 1-hour do not warrent any carbs, your body cant digest them in that time period and will be stored, use carbs 2-hours before and within 1-hour after your workout as pre workout and post workout nutrition, this is important.

Got some new running shoes today.  New Balance 1064's.  My last pair of 1063's had about 400 miles on them.  I didn't realize how bad the cushioning had gotten.
