I am leaving for Vegas in a few hours and brought my run stuff and lots of water. I will try to log in when I can, but you guys keep posting and encouraging each other.

Have a great weekend

Did the longest run I have done since 2008 Philly Marathon. 6 miles in 46:44. Felt pretty good. I was very happy about this one.

Did 2 hour self guided spin. 20 aero, 20 climb, 20 aero, 15 climb. 15 aero, 15 climb, 15 aero. 2 bottles cytomax and 2 gu packets. Should have brought a bottle of infinit instead of one of the cytomax. Oh well. Lesson learned

Hey guys,

I made it back in one piece. Luckily my daughter's team didn't make the semi finals and we were able to leave Las Vegas early. Thank goodness. It rained for 5 straight hours. But, we got home at the same time her last game would have ended!

I did terrible on the water challenge. I think I drank 8 oz of water all weekend.

We are supposed to have 6 days of rain, so I am not sure what I am doing this week.

Time to unpack

I have to

I did my 3 mile hill run with my girlfriend.  I felt great for not doing anything for the last few days.  My girlfriend also did a PR for this run.  She wasnt happy because I was pushing the pace but she did great.

I m in the same boat as Madcow with the rain issue.  Regardless, I will do my workouts.

Have found a masters swim program that I am hitting 3 times per week through the end of this month.  Running on alternate days.  Did 5.5 m this morning at an 11 min pace but am pleased with it as I use Galloway's 5:1 and the 11 min includes the walking.  (Old man here trying to preserve knees with the walk/run plan).  Not getting much biking in right now.  Did get on trainer for 1/2 hour Sun.  Tomorrow scheduled for a new experience.  For Christmas, my brother and I signed up for VO2 testing and tomorrow is the day.  Not sure what all we will learn but will keep you posted.

Very cool, stick with the Masters swim. You won't regret it.

Let us know how the VO2 testing went.

I went for a 35 minute run today at lunch. We were suppsed to leave at 11 am, but my coworker was talking to someone for 30 minutes, so we didn't leave until 11:40. It started pouring on us for the whole run. We would have been dry if we had left when we planned on it

Alright, you guys seem to have a grip on your workouts. Do you have any questions related to clothing or equipment?

Did 1100 in the pool. Forced to use the shorter pool. Was told it was 19 yards. Did 30 laps and did it in sub 2:00/100 meters. Not sure if I believe the lifeguard.

This rain is killing me. I got in a little ride on the trainer last night. Might be able to do the same tonight. I need to run, though.

How are you guys doing?

Wow, I feel much better seeing how crappy some of you did over the past week.    Life is something else.

So, holiday weekend, the wife and I decide to go to ATL to see some friends.  So, no workouts on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.  Not much water got drank, but loads of beer.  Remember that nutrition talk after the first of the year?  Yeah, out the window.  Loads of crappy food.  Just awful.

Since then, my baby has had roseola rash and cutting a tooth.  My wife is on day #2 being sick.   We are trying to nail down details on buying a house.  Telling you, I'm about to lose it!!

I did run 3 miles on Tuesday, and 6.5 miles yesterday.  Nothing today.

I really need some rest.  I had to get up twice last night with the baby because Mommy is sick.  Couldn't force myself to go run this AM.  Good thing too because baby woke a bit after 5AM.  Ugh.

Regarding your clothing topics... I'm curious how many run in biking gear.  I bought a pair of tights with a thin chamous in it and tried running and couldn't take it.  I bought basic running tights instead.

Life is always getting in the way of training
Good job getting out there when you can.

I would look into tri clothing. Even though you found bike tights with a thin pad, you are still better off with the pad in tri shorts than bike shorts. They are made so you can swim in them and they will wick away the water, and they are small enough to run in. Even though I race in tri shorts, I train in running shorts. I just get in a few practice runs with the tri shorts just before the race. So, to make a long answer even longer...  training in running tights now, is fine. You will need tri shorts later, though.

Sorry I have been MIA last week.  I failed misserably at everything last week.  I went back home for 5 days for a Furniture Market.  Long days and short nights.  Got back home to Indiana yesterday and will get back on plan today.

I love my Tri shorts.  great for swimming and running.  Not as good as bike shorts of course, but still better than nothing for biking.

I am going for a run today and get some weights in also.

Nice run Scott, maybe you should pack a burrito in your run special needs bag

Hey guys, don't worry about missed workouts. This is still the offseason, so life happens. just brush it off and get out there when you can.

I am going out to dinner tonight, so I rode this morning and ran at lunch. Now I can what I want

Thanks but I will pass on that. Did 1.2 miles in the pool today in 45:55, 10 seconds better than my best time to date. I then took the kids home, ate lunch and went back to the gym for a 2 hours elf guided spin. During the spin, i had two bottles of cytomax, 1 300 calorie bottle of Infinit and 2 100 calorie Gus. After about 1:10 I started getting queasy and cant figure out why. Any thoughts?

Long swim and short bike (brick) Sat. Will try and run again today, bad shin splints but they have eased up will go on a slow run today and I believe that's a good excuse to buy some new shoes.

I am guessing, but it looks like you took in way too many calories. Not sure what you had for lunch, but that was probably still sitting your stomach when you added, 2 bottles of Cytomax (probably around 200 cal each), 300 cal of Infinit, and 200 cal of Gu. You are looking at between 700 and 900 calories for 2 hours, plus lunch. Did you take any water in there? You probably could have done the whole spin with what you had for lunch plus water.

Your body can only process between 250-350 cal per hour during a workout...closer to 300 for most people. I take in 350 cal per hour for any workout more than 3 hours. Anything less than 3 and I use just water or possibly one 600 calorie bottle of my Ironman cocktail, that I take over the course of 1.5 hours.

I have also read that the higher the intensity, the lower the absorbption rate, so riding at a "spin class" rate instead of  Ironman pace, could mean you are processing slower than you would if you were out riding.

Here are a couple of articles you should read.

How often do you change your shoes?
I usually change mine every 350 miles or 5 or 6 months depending on what I am training for. Usually, my knees tell me when it's time
