NONE, at all. I bought two McDavid 419R knee braces, and seems to do the trick. Not only that, but recorded my fastest time, 4.33 miles in 32:15, a huge improvement from my 10k in 1:00:07 2 weeks ago. I see we are on to swimming, can anyone recommend a good swim program for a newbie like myself??? |

Subject: RE: Newbz'z summer mentor group is FULL!!!! I also use the 2 beak kick just to try and stay streamlined and for body rotation. Grant Hackett is the world record holder for the 1500m...he switches his kick pattern up, but there is a you tube video of him at a meet that shows most of the race he's using a 2 beat kick. If it works for a world record holder that doesn't have to bike and run afterwards...I figure it can work for me too. It's a great video...I think it's 2 parts...about 8 minutes each and shows it from an underwater camera that follows him from end to end. I think if you search 1500 grant hackett, you should be able to find it. |

I see we are on to swimming, can anyone recommend a good swim program for a newbie like myself??? I would be hesitant to be doing runs that fast especially coming off what may be an injury. When I had patellar tendonitis...it would only flare up after runs of 6+ miles...so while I would feel great for the first 4-5 miles of some runs, there were some that I ended up limping/walking home after mile 7 or so. Everyone is different...but just want to throw that out there. I agree with Newbz theory that most runs should be done 1-2 minutes slower than race pace. Some of the best advice I heard is that "you don't train fast to race...you train more to race fast" |

I get back a plan that has me swimming a warm-up of 100yds.......rest 30sec.....then repeat six more times. Hell, the furthest I've been at one time is 75yds.....lol Next? (In all fairness, it did tell me to use the fins for the 7X100's. If they help that much, I'm game. In my last session, I did 8X50's.....which was 6 more than I could do the day before.). Like I said......I'll try it. But I sure hope the fins are magic! |

(wait, did i just use OMG? on the internets?.....yikes!) anyway, just used the new foam roller for about 15 min on my sore butt muscle after looking online at some ways to use it, and WOW! I stood up (the past few days, after sitting and then standing, i could feel the tight muscle) and it felt great! i'm sure its not "all better", and am still going to finish this as an unscheduled day off, and take my normal rest day tomorrow, but this is a good sign we'll see how it feels in the morning. I told you...FOAM ROLLER!!! It's one of God's blessings to man. LOL! X2 on the amazing healing powers of the foam roller. BTW, BoobieDr....I love your screen name, I giggle everytime I see it. |

Veteran 275 | Subject: RE: Newbz'z summer mentor group is FULL!!!! I completely agree with the wonderful powers of the foam roller. Indeed it is the apparatus of the gods. LOL OK for those of you who use the two beat kick in swimming, how did you master it? Background for me. I am a fairly strong and consistent swimmer. I am not fast (2:00 per 100) but endurance is my forte. Breathing is not an issue. I breathe bilaterally in just about every situation except racing. I am not a furious kicker in the water. Right now I am honestly trying to get more time in the pool and tweek my stroke so that I can get a bit faster. so how did you master the two beat kick? |

I, like grant hackett (hahaha prob the only thing we have in common), change it up as needed, and no two kicks are prob alike. |

Expert 1151 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Newbz'z summer mentor group is FULL!!!! ok, I apologize if someone has already asked this question as I have not had time to read all the replies. I saw there had been a recommendation to do a masters swim class. I saw this listed in my local rec center's catalog, but wasn't sure if it was for me. What exactly happens there? do they work with all levels? Is there indiviual coaching going on? Do they give you drills to do? I usually swim about 1000M at a time in about 30 minutes doing the crawl. I'll time myself tomorrow to give you a more exact time (sorry I'm bad about this-trying to be better for my training logs). I'm doing a srint tri that is 800M in OW. I swim continuously at a relaxed pace. Should I try to do more laps? Should I try to speed up my pace? I'm just not sure what to do to improve. Also, when I swim I only turn my head to one side to breath every 2 strokes. I feel really comfortable with this, but should I try and turn to both sides? Thanks |

Extreme Veteran 442 Ohio | Subject: RE: Newbz'z summer mentor group is FULL!!!! Yep - I'm the one that is late to the party but here's my Bio: Name: ddiamond/ DJ My Story: I was an athlete growing up (soccer) played from the time I was five until I left for college, I was recruited to play in college but decided that I wanted to "have a life" - code for party, so I gave up soccer and instead drank a lot of beer, ate a lot of pizza. After being inactive for a pretty long time, started running last May and just kept at it adding distance and time. I ended up doing two 5K races last fall and a 5 mile run on Thanksgiving. In December I started swimming and by January started biking so Triathlons seemed like something to do. I have never done a Triathlon, first one is scheduled for April 17. Family Status: I have been married for a little over 6 years and we have a 3 year old little boy. Current Training: 6-8 Hours a week - not following a plan, just free wheeling it - I do update my logs daily and they are public so anyone can take a peek Races So Far This Year: 10K Twin Creek Trail Run, 3 Splash N Dashes (1000 Yard Swim + 5K run) 2010 Races: Miami University Sprint Tri - a couple more sprint Tris (TBD) and an OLY late season. Weightloss: Between last May and now I have lost 60 pounds - I would like to lose 5 more but I am comfortable where I am. Nutrition is not my strong point - actually it sucks and I am a horrible cook - I should not be allowed in the kitchen - thank god my husband does cook. I'm looking forward to being part of this group. |

Thanks breathing to one side is not an issue at all, plenty of high level swimmers only go one way. As far as masters, its a group workout setting, all levels (unless they say otherwise), normally pslit up with fast, med, slow lanes (bigger groups will have actual pace ranges for each group). coached with a workout plan, the level of coaching will vary by group. |

I feel really comfortable with this, but should I try and turn to both sides? Thanks The best way for you to breath is the pattern that feels most natural and comfortable to you. Even if you only ever breath on one side, it is good to have the ability to switch it up in case of an open water swim with rough waters. What do most of you use foam rollers to target? Do you use it to help soothe preexisting injuries? Or do some of you use it to just help sore muscled recover after long runs and such? |
