sand101 - 2010-05-21 7:22 PM Yo all,

Final taper practice before Sunday's big day.  LostSheep is a DNS (sadly), so I am upholding BT pride by myself, I guess.

Last practice went well. - 1000 yd kicker just to keep fresh before Sunday morning.  Inside that 1000 I did:

100 in 1:12  in warmup - way fast for me.
200 in 2:32 in warmup - new PR

Then the main set was a simple 500yd TT.

500 in 6:36 - new PR by 19 seconds(!)

I had planned on doing a run, but shut her down after the swim.  I will have a pitiful run week, but this is an A race for me and I didn't want to screw up a good start to the weekend.

Congrats on the new PR, and good luck in the race!!

I read it last night - great stuff.  I have also posted mine.  It was a great day for a swim.

I have a request for a discussion, Mark.

How do you go about scheduling your strength sessions without it making other workouts really tough?

That’s a loaded question.  Sometimes you schedule strength training to make workouts tough and sometimes they're for recovery.

How do you plan your strength  training? How do you plan your triathlon training?  Is your week bike focus, run focus, swim focus or recovery focus.   Even more to think about, what kind of training block(4-8 weeks) are you in?

I’ll work on some scenarios and give you examples.

Planning strength training?  My weight room is 20 steps from my office.  I go in there when lunch hits and the office guys harass me to get in there.  So basically workouts are at lunchtimes during the week - that's when I can get to them easily.

How do I plan tri training?  Whatever I can get to, I do.    My focus lately has been not to drown in a 3.3 mile swim.  Mission complete.  Now it is to complete (with style) a hilly 13 mile ride on June 12th.  You know the one.  But mostly I just get out when I can.  I don't have much more structure than that.

Training block?  What's that? ;-)  I do as much as I can when I can.  Every few weeks I end up having to work more or something else comes up, so that is a recovery week.

Back to the weights.  While I'm in season(April to September), my weights are mostly free weights and body weight exercises.  Sets of 8-10.  The workouts are to keep good biomechanics and retain strength.  I cut weights out 2 weeks before an A race.

Off season is different.  I'll do much more weight, but I still keep the reps in the 8-10 range.  I'm a triathlete first and sometimes it hard to remember that while in the weight room.

If anyone eyeballs you, just wait until they get on the treadmill.  Then get your revenge.  Nothing like run 6:30s, while the meatpacker is running 10-11s.  And remember to try and start a conversation.

Yeah, the thread really does seem to be on life support at times.  Here's my May...

May's totals:
Bike:12h 16m 23s  - 208.69 Mi
Run:9h 24m 41s  - 65.83 Mi
Swim:11200 Yd

I'm a little bummed the my running mileage has fallen off.  I missed one long run this month that would have only put me in the 75 mile range.  I was hoping to keep my mileage up in the 100 mi/month range where it had been.  That said, I'm not really worried about it because I've been upping my bike and swim.

Next two things comming up are a 10-Miler in the middle of the month followed by my first Tri at the end of the month!

I didn't intend that to be a dig on you, Mark.  I was thinking about it the other day how it's kinda of funny that it's basically the same group of us from the last mentor thread that have kept posting.

I think I was a bit swim heavy last month. LOL  In my defense the swim was an A race for me - I really wanted to do well.  I not only did well, in my opinion that was the best athletic performance I have put out in over a decade.  So mission accomplished.  My time otherwise was hampered a bit by soccer coaching.  I may be able to get a bit more volume in, but an average of an hour a day is close to what I can do for a while.

As far as the race I think I will do well in the swim (I'm personally hoping for whitecaps ;-) ).  The bike should be ok.  I did a TT at OM not too long ago and averaged 20.5mph without any of the aero goodies.  If I can break 20 on that course I'll be thrilled (for those not familiar it is very hilly).  I'm more worried about the run.  I've had significant problems lately with the heat and running.  I'll get 20+ miles in this week, but not sure how cramming this late in the game will work out.

I have a 5k run this weekend, so we'll see where I am at on the run.

The tri is definitely a B (or even C) race.  I'm training for an Oly in Sept which was the first tri I signed up for.  I signed up for the "Sprint" to ge a little experience.  Turns out it's pretty long for a sprint.  The swim is almost 1000 yd.  I just got a email this morning saying the race is in 24 day so I guess I'd better stop complaining and get my butt in the pool!

Have not been on much but I do read time to time you guys in here.  Hope all are doing well. I have relaxed the last two weeks since the HIM.  Trained 5-6 days but not as much time or intensity.  I begin training 26 weeks for a full IM in B2B.  I talked to a coach today and am thinking about hiring one.
