yep and they have found a few in the lake but it does make the swim portion more exciting and your swim time will be very fast.

Memorial weekend, no wetsuit and tough conditions. Never thought I'd say it about an IM but I'm actually getting interested...

Ok so here is a good article to think about and things are looking good. But the time of year may be very hot.

that acticle read that "ironman returns"   was there ever one in the woodlands/houston/ texas to begin with.

While it's looking good I'll wait for an official announcement.. to many things can go wrong.   Does anyone know how that meeting where the agenda was posted went..  since it sounded more like the idea of an IM was still being pitched, but from a standpoint of "we have all this ready to go... are you in"  to the chamber

Agree with all your points Gary.  It seems like its only a proposal, albeit a very complete proposal to the board.

I am excited about the possibility, but im realistic about the lack of confirmation at this point.  The points in the news article don't say anything new to what we know from the meeting agenda.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist.....but can anyone even substantiate that this agenda is real?  If so, I really hope someone goes to this meeting and reports back.

Even if this gets the green light you gotta wonder if it can even be feasible for 2011?  I'd image the logistics for doing an IM are extremely difficult and that the level of BS bureaucracy is probably something even the Obama administration would be proud of.  Just thinking 11 months to pull this thing together could be tough, but they may already have more of the ground work laid than what we know?  Just something else to ponder...

the agenda came off of the township website, as I believe is law. Also, if you read the thing carefully the discussion is over a sponsorship, not approval of the race. Now I might be splitting hairs here, b/c IM wants the sponsorship to do the race, but it doesn't look like the discussion is about whether they want it or not. I plan of being there and if I can film I will post a link up for others to watch.

would they (WTC) do a race without sponsership??    I honestly don't know.  I know they have the big names, ford, gatoraid etc.  but do they generally have sponership from the local community??

Let me clarify. Memorial Hermann is the title sponsor, but I think WTC gets local buyin from the community that they race in. Not 100% sure all the thinking, but my guess would be a show of support and a "We're gonna bring 17 million to your community, how about you help us put this thing on" sort of mentality.

Ford is the title sponsor for all US WTC Ironmans, I would guess this would be the same, with Memorial Hermann being the lead local sponsor.  I did St. George in May and as I recall the Town of St. George was in charge of coordinating all the volunteers and support (from aid stations to police); my guess would be that that is the discussion on the "trade-in-kind".   It is also worth noting at the awards banquet they repeatedly talked about how it took 2 years of planning to make it happen.  Hopefully the Woodlands can meet the WTC requirements and pull it off for 2011, but 2012 may be more realistic.  I am checking everyday for an announcement and ready to make my hotel reservations for a long weekend in The Woodlands!

I understood ya.. well kind of       I just like seeing all the things that actually go into a race to make it happen, since it's pretty amazing to me.

I was  just curious about the whole sponsor thing on the local level, since they will need support to make things go easier and if a community is actually against it happening what would they do then??

Ok, just got back from the Township meeting. I thought it went pretty well. I did find out early on though that this meeting was for discussion purposes and not for a vote. The vote happens next week. I believe Wed at 6pm. Here is what I do know: If this is approved Memorial Hermann will be the title sponsor, not Ford. The race will be Memorial weekend. The only sticking points that were discussed today were the liability and the sponsorship money. The liability was addressed immediately by their attorney and everyone seemed happy with the answers. The sponsorship money was only questioned by a couple of people. The rest of the board were using words like 'Very Excited" in their comments, so right now it looks pretty good. There might be a couple of directors on the fence, so I guess we'll see Wednesday. It also sounded like Wednesday the full presentation would include the courses, So I will know the routes next week.

I recorded the discussion but you can't here it very well. If I can get it uploaded I will let you know.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update TJ!

This is very exciting news.  Wish they could flip the dates with IMSG  but I am all in for this sucker!  Hopefully on Wednesday, along with the course maps, they will announce when registration begins.  Wonder if it will be all online or if they will hold a local registration?

Well, it looks like I will be doing an IM in 2011 all said and done!

I told my hubby long before this rumor started circulating that I would not do an IM in 2011 after doing IMFL in 2009 and Cedar Point this September ... UNLESS an IM came to Texas.  At least it is early in the season!  As a native Houstonian I am not all that worried about the weather - it is what I train in every day!
