Do I go to French class today or no? My company offers me free French classes 3 times a week. I have class today at 2, but I also have a TON of work to do, but I have pretty much been given the green light to not have it finished today. But an hour of French means an hour without TAN... Decisions, decisions. TAN will still be here when you get back. Yes, but unfortunately so will my work. I kinda just want to plug away and get this done. Don't you just love it when people give you 3-4 hour lead times on URGENT work? I work with a guy from France, guys who speak French at the right times are hot. Does this help? My last crazy, he was a French guy whose parents were English and his last name was Froggit, yeah, this is the one who called and dumped me by saying, "I'm allergic to you ..." Sometimes, things get lost in translation, no? Out of curiosity, how was he a French guy with English parents? This concept is blasting my mind right now... No. His last name really was Froggit. Oh you mean what he said ... I'm pretty sure I got the translation clearly (although it took a long time and didn't fall into place until tonight): "I'm allergic to you" = "Your last crazy informed me he would slice my willy off with paper cuts if I didn't stop seeing you." English parents moved to France as a young couple ... stayed there, still there ... their boys are from there, grew up there, are Froggit as Froggit can be. He's truly natively fluent in French and English, both, equally, and fluent in several other later-acquired languages. Not the language of love, for sure, but I understand his desire to keep his willy where it is. Ahhh, ok, that makes sense, then. I was definitely confused there! That's one thing about places other than North America... (I don't know about other places, but much of Europe is like this) Everyone speaks a multitude of languages. It is really amazing as a born and bred English-only speaker to hear that the majority (stats aren't my thing. This could be an exaggeration) of people over in Europe speak 3, 4, 5+ languages fluently. "Look, lady, I speak two languages: English, and bad English ..." - Korben Dallas, The Fifth Element Heh. Reminds me of that old joke: What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual! What do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual! What do you call someone who speaks one language? American! But you're probably a Canuck, aren't you? Anyhow ... your observation is correct, and it holds true for many places other than Europe, too. In Indonesia, for one thing, there are more native languages than any other country in the world. Estimates range from 700 up to 1,000 DISTINCT languages (not dialects). Everybody I know speaks AT LEAST three, and two of the main ones (Balinese and Javanese) are EXTREMELY different languages from caste to caste. You cannot use the same language to address someone in a different caste than your own, nor below or above blah blah blah ... it's ridiculously complicated. Between the five members of my nuclear family, we speak ... 13 languages. |

You cannot use the same language to address someone in a different caste than your own, nor below or above blah blah blah ... it's ridiculously complicated. Between the five members of my nuclear family, we speak ... 13 languages. Yup, I'm a Canuck, but most of us here (well, non-immigrant Canadians) only speak English. In Quebec, we are forced to speak French, and English isn't actually a requirement. There is a LOT of politics here about it, and it gets pretty heated at times. In 1995 (I think), Quebec actually had a vote if they wanted to become a sovereign country, and the split was 50.3%-49.7% or 53%-47% or something really close in favour of staying a part of Canada. But like I said, it gets heated. I am actually very jealous of people who can speak multiple languages. I would consider myself bilingual right now, and I also used to be able to pass in Spanish, but it's nothing like many other places in the world. My boss, an Italian, is FLUENT in 5 languages. Things like that make me wish I knew more languages. |

I have a friend who is doing her Ph.D. in tracing lung cancer indicators in peoples' breath. Very interesting stuff. My first tri was actually also a charity race for the Princess Margret Foundation Hospital, which is apparently one of the 5 largest cancer research facilities in the world. If you haven't picked up, cancer is a cause very near and dear to me. |

However due to the technology there are some cell types that are more suited to what I do so alot of what I see is hematepoetic cancer. I work in pure research or what they call basic science here so there is not a whole lot of clinical work going on in my area, though there is some. I know my boss is out on vacation and I have no apointments today. My cell sort guy cancelled on me yesterday so I'm having a slow day. It's bad, but I tend to take VERY long lunches when my bosses are on vacation. I actually went to a Speedo warehouse sale and had to wait in line for 1.5 hours before I even got in on lunch when they were gone. I definitely HAVE work that I should be doing, but I can't, because people don't give me enough information, and the people who CAN give me information are on vacation, as the Quebec construction industry shuts down for 2 weeks every summer. This could be a long afternoon. |
