Got my swim in today but still need to do my stretching.  Everyone in for the challenge?

While I was there I chatted with a guy who was on his 3rd month of swimming.  Reminded me of where I was at the 3 month mark.  He was a little frustrated with his progress but hitting the pool 3x week and taking every bit of help he could get.  I never really thought I would be much of a swimmer.  I am not a great swimmmer but am making great strides.  If I can do it anyone can!

Got my stretching in tonight!

My biggest transition tip for everyone is PACK LIGHT!  You really don't need as much as you think you do, I think as a first timer I brought half my house with, 'just in case'.  Now I pack bare bones light and make my transition area small.  I also usually am at the race by myself in the morning, family usually does not make it up that early, so I bring an old long sleeve shirt and/or pants with to wear around before the race starts because even in the middle of summer it is chilly out there (I usually don't choose to wear a wet suit unless it is a long swim or rough conditions).  Some races have you standing around for a couple of hours between the time transition closes and your wave goes off.  I try to leave my clothes somewhere that I can try to come back and pick them up, but if I can't get to them then no loss.

Got in a nice spin-run brick on Sunday ... 45 minutes of hammering on the spinning cycle and 35 minutes on the treadmill.  It's been really cold here and even so, when headed home from the gym, I passed 3 people biking in very windy, 28* conditions - HARD CORE.

Got in an hour of spinning last night at the gym.

Plans are to hit the pool and treadmill again tonight.

I really appreciate the tips for swimming and I will work on using some of these tonight.  I do have a sore shoulder and have to work into it gingerly with the freestyle, but I will try and use some of LRR's tips ... head down, stretch with the leading arm, etc.

Gary, are there shorts out there ones could wear for all 3 legs and not have to transition from swim to bike?  Is this typically a tri short?  I'm thinking to keep the transition really simple; i.e. mainly from barefoot to shoes and that eliminating the shorts thing will help with transition time.

Yes, Tri shorts are specifically designed for this.  For me, all the way thru the HIM distance I will just wear tri shorts and a tri top.  At the IM level I will change into bike shorts (at least for my first one).  On my IM relay (I did the swim/bike) I changed into bike shorts but it was really cold (38 degrees) and getting on that bike with wet shorts was not something I wanted to do.  As for tri suit vs. Tri shorts/top is up to you.

I have narrowed my Ironman event choices down to Florida, Wisconson, or Arizona. Wisconson is the closest, Arizona is the week before thanksgiving, and Florida fits in from a timing perspective. But, I grew up in New Mexico, and live in the midwest. I have been in the ocean once. I'm concerned about sharks, and jellyfish. How worried should I be about sharks and jelly fish in Panama City in Novemeber?

Randy - Sharks I wouldn't worry about and I don't think jellyfish will be much of an issue either.  For more info I would read some of last years race report or check out the IMFL race group to see if it came up.

Stretching for yesterday - done.  Also got a swim in but was a bum and didn't do my scheduled ride.  Life gets in the way sometime.

So how is everyone doing?

I've been doing the stretching, however, usually I don't. When I have exercised in the past it's always seemed like I had more injuries. It could be complete coincidence but I've been exercising for 7 months with no stretching and have been injury free except for a little discomft of the medial side of my left knee.

I agree with Gary that life gets in the way of training. I've been trying to increase my weekly run distance over the past few weeks which has been going pretty good.

Morning all!
Yesterday ended up being a very busy day at work but managed to get the stretching in and a 5k run in last night.  Dang cold for Louisiana and it was in the upper 20's.  I was bundled up and actually almost too warm.  I am planning on buying a new(er) bike this year and almost bought a used CD0.1.  I love QR's but just wasn't quite ready to spend the money yet.

Today I have a swim planned and tomorrow should be a 3+ hr ride.

With this weather we are experiencing everyone stay safe and train smart!

Registered and signed up today for my first event.  And I will be training my tail off (literally) between now and March 12th.

Tonight’s training is spinning ... endurance ride and running.  Too, I simply have to lower my time with the swim event.  I was checking out the 'competition' from last year’s event and the swim leg is going to kill me.

With the swim training I've tried to lengthen or stretch with the leading arm, rotate my head, point the nose straight down, etc.  I just feel like I'm not getting enough air.  Maybe this is a function of training and this will go away over time.  For now I've resorted to a combination sidekick - back stroke, but still need to reduce my time.  Any tips or suggestions in this regard are much appreciated.

Ciao ... Dorm

3rd day off in a row, today will be 4th.   Between work, life and a sore calf muscle It's been hard to get anything real done.
I have been doing Active Isolated Stretching every day.  Mostly for my hams, achilles, hips and shoulders.
Tomorrow I'll be on the trainer for sure.

Swimming starts this weekend.  No more excuses.

Evening all!
Stretching done, swim done, and I have a free evening.  Woohoo! Now what to do with myself with no training?  Actually my wife is out of town for a couple of days so I am doing the single Dad routine for a little while.  My kids are old enough now that its not that hard for us.  Another busy day at work but its better to be busy these days.

Dorm, congrats on signing up.  Which one did you sign up for?  It makes the whole process feel real (if you know what I mean).  Having a set goal of when and where is a great motivator.

As for the swimming, a couple of items.  Being out of air could be going too hard, having to work too hard because of poor form, or simply incorrect breathing technique.
A few tips:
1. Make sure your breathing out when your head is down.  Blowing bubbles, humming, etc so when your you turn your head to breath your lungs are empty enough to breath in.  If you don't then your turning your head, blowing out, breathing in, and turning your head back down.  Way too much work.
2. When your swimming make sure that you are rotating from your hips not just turning your head.  Makes breathing easier.
3.  If you use a pull buoy do you have the same issue?
4.  Are you trying to go out too fast?
There is a drill or too I can recommend.  Also, this months (or may be last months) Masters magazine ("Swimmer") had an article on breathing and there is probably a BT article also.  I will try to find them and paste the link.

OK completed stretching routine this morning and plan to either hit the gym for some swim-run time or if the weather works out I'll get in some road time ... yessss!  It's been too cold here for me to ride outside and hopefully it will be sunny and warmer today.

Gary I signed up for the Azalea Sprint, Wilmington NC ... March 12th.  Thanks for the breathing tips, and I suspect I was doing most of the wrong things ... not blowing bubbles, trying to go out too hard, etc.  The wife is out of town this weekend visiting one of our daughters, so I'll have some time to work on better technique.

Hey all,
Been a busy day with the wife out of town and its just me and the kids.  Managed 1 hr on the trainer this morning and one hour tonight.  Wanted to ride out on the road but it was just too cold and I wimpled out.  About to head out for a run.  Bought some under armor compression tights (lined) which will hopefully keep me warm.

Dorm - Good luck with the stroke work.  Keep an eye out clinics, instructors, etc.  Having someone who knows what they are doing watch your stroke and give you tips is invaluable.

Hope to be around more.

How is the weather for everyone?

One up on this suggestion, probably one thing that helps me is have someone come to the pool and video you swimming.  Even better, if your pool has an 'underwater view area' get them to video your underwater stroke (swimming toward the window), but most don't have this.  Either way, a video of you swimming will let you see exactly what you are doing, I find what I 'think' I am doing really is not happening in the pool (high elbows, short pull, sinking feet..etc) and it lets you make adjustments.

Swim - Great idea!  I did this once, our pool brought in a coach with an underwater video camera linked to a TIVO DVR and a TV.  We would swim past it than he would back it up and we could watch our stroke, listen to his comments and than go again.  It is amazing what you think you are doing and what you are actually doing.

Now an underwater viewing area would be very cool, never saw one for a pool but it would be an awesome thing to have.

Lesson learned:  Old tree on property line.  Branches falling near neighbors house.  So I start cutting down down.  About half way thru and get to one big branch and put rope on to fall in correct place.  Start cutting with chainsaw and the branch was so rotten it literal broke into 4 pieces and dropped straight down.  Barely cut into the wood but the vibration from the saw caused it to shatter.  I am very cautious on these types of things and was well away from it.  But watching the rest of the branches sway I decided that I am not cutting anymore of that thing.  The rest can just drop on its own as it won't hit anything or I can get a service.
