I ordered my Xterra wetsuit today, but I won't get it in time for my first tri this season..looks like they are pretty backed up I will have to use my crappy scuba one with bad shoulder movement..OR..rent one..but it's only a 300m swim, so we'll see..i dunno.

Planning on hitting the pool today....not sure if it's better to do drills or just swim 300s..anyone have opinions on this? I feel like I just need to get my fitness in check before really working technique, plus swimming the 300s helps with confidence for the upcoming tri in 1 months time.

Too bad your wetsuit won't be in on time.

I don't know a lot about swimming, but I suggest a combination of straight swimming and drills. The point of drills is to improve your technique, which translates to faster times.

kwynnc - 2011-05-10 6:19 PM Hex - how many times a week are you swimming? If it's a couple of times or more a week, I would suggest doing 300's once a week and then doing intervals the other session. If you're doing 3 times a week, you could throw drills in there for the third session. That way you mix it up. I was surprised at how much doing intervals helped me ie. 8 x 50, 12 x 25, 2 x 100, etc. I went from being able to barely do a 400 to doing an 800 the next time I tried to go long. I'm embarassed to report that I have done NOTHING since my tri. My arch/heel is still bugging me, so I'm trying to wear my brace at night and see if that helps. My next planned event is a half marathon in January - I might throw a sprint tri in at the end of the summer but not sure yet. Plan to start the couch to 5k either this week, or beginning of next. Time to get back to being accountable.

Take care of that heel and start up again gradually. The couch to 5km was a great choice for that!

thanks.

It's been once a week, I think I can manage to go 2xwk (2 consecutive days though) from now on. I live in the country, so the pool is quite a haul.

I will try the 300s and build them up to like 500s on one workout, and do interval and drills on the other just to mix it up and work on technique.

Don't worry about doing your swims back to back because it doesn't take as much of a toll on your body as running or cycling.

MINI RANT!

ok.... i'm just DAYS away from marathon attempt #1 & maybe this is taper-madness?
i'm driving myself CRAZY!

obsessively checking the weather forecast (which isn't so good right now), a bundle of nervous energy...
(i kind of just want to get this OVER with already!!)

it's not going to be fast... or pretty...
but i'm going to get it done!

& THEN i get my life back!
and the first task after my legs have forgiven me (& after i FINALLY take my road bike in for a proper fitting)...

i'll be learning how to clip in & clip out!
YIKES!

hope everyone's training is going well!!

Shoot us a link to your race report! I hope that it went well and that you had good weather.

Keep us posted on how your clipped in pedal training goes. I am probably getting some this summer.

also!

i just picked up a wetsuit myself & tried it out for the first time pretty recently.

i'm not entirely convinced that a wetsuit is for me!

the extra buoyancy is pretty amazing.... but somehow i almost felt less in control of my actual stroke or technique.

but ah well-- maybe it's just a matter of practicing MORE in the wetsuit before i write if off!

Practice more for sure! Wetsuits are a different animal. Good luck!

Good luck on the Marathon!  I understand the stir crazy anticipation of ramoing down the workouts when you feel like you should be doing more work to get ready.

It is funny that you mention the clipless pedals because I just bought and installed mine yesterday.  I practiced for a while clipping and un-clipping with each foot and felt good about it.  Took off and clipped in with both feet, panicked, and fell over on my side with both feet still clipped in.  Soon it will be second nature, but I knew that I would have at least on slow motion tip over while learning.

Hopefully no more falls! If you have any tips during the learning process shoot them our way.

Nice to see everyone progressing! I haven't been able to do anything for way too long because I'm finishing up my sophomore year of college. So much studying to do for finals and I need to write a 20 page paper. It's due next Wednesday, but I need to finish it by Monday afternoon! I've only written 6 or 7 pages so far. Not good, but I'm working on it.

I'm gonna buy a bike soon! I do love spin classes, but in order to do a tri I kinda need a bike. I was thinking of buying an entry level bike on bikesdirect for $399. Seems like the best way to go for me unless anyone has a different suggestion? I don't really want to spend more than the $399 (+tax).

For bike advice check out the gear area on the forum. You can post links to bikes you are considering and people will tell you what they think.

Good luck with your report! I understand being busy, I'm finishing a course in the next 3 weeks or so and I start a new job tomorrow!! I will be setting up a proper training schedule by the end of the week. I'm finally healthy again and need to get back to it.

I'm quiet because I'm sucking wind!

Going for a ride this morning.  Maybe 15 miles.  First one that long so I will see what happens.

Randy, what pace are you running/riding?

Also, a question regarding bike computers.   It looks like I can spend anywhere from $20 to $400 on a computer.   At this point I think all I want is speed, and distance.  The other optional stuff I don't really need like weather, calories burned, earth rotational speed and  yada yada.   From your experience, is there something I'm missing and will regret having later?

I picked up a very basic bike computer for about $30 that told me speed and distance that I found effective. In retrospect I wished that it had cadence though... I have a heart rate monitor seperately so I didn't miss that.

I have a polar CS200 with cadence, I guess that's somewhere in the middle of the range. It's a good unit with hear rate monitor. I don't think you need much more than that in terms of monitoring speed/distance and being able to see how you are improving in terms of HR and cadence.

I managed to finish a pretty consistent week of training..1 month to go before my super sprint event.

Are you excited for your event? Do you have any questions about race day? I suggest practicing setting up and using your transition area - it's a tip I learned on BT that served me well!

Holy crap Randy!  You are a roadrunner!

I cycled 18 miles this morning and on the way "out" I was almost 20 mph!  I was thinking forget this triathlon thing I'm going to enter the tour de france!  However, when I made the turn and came back I realized I had about a 20 mph headwind.   .  The way home was gruelling.  Next time, check the wind.

Nelson

That's funny!

I did a 10km race recently that I finished WAY faster than expected.... then they announced that they made an error and it was only a 9km course.

I certainly did! I went zip lining, surfing, ATVing, horse back riding, and slid down a 0.5km water slide!

Disclaimer: I sucked at surfing but still had a great time! I panicked on the horse and didn't go far...

I'm very excited - just bought a very lightly used Fuji 2.0 Newest. The bike seems to fit me great, felt really good on the little ride I had tonight. This is my first road bike so we shall see. I will go for a longer ride tomorrow. Hope everyones training is going well.

Congratulations on the new bike!  It is always fun to get new toys to play with.  I had purchased my first road bike also this year and it is a big change from anything else.  I have never been so careful about missing all of the potholes and debris in the road as I am now because there isn't much to those little tires.

Not good! Give this stretch a shot and see if it helps (if you haven't been doing it already). Try to do this a couple of times daily to see improvement.

I am too cheap to buy a foam roller.  I just roll a tennis ball over any sore spots, then toss it with the dog.  Its a multipurpose tool that has never been used for its intended use.

Tennis balls are great, I use them too. Foam rollers do a slightly different job though. The tennis balls get precise spots but foam rollers can stretch out the full width of a large muscle. You can try a rolling pin if you like.
