owl_girl - 2011-07-12 6:14 PM I've had some bad swimming days recently.  My goggles are older than dirt and leak intermittently.  Last week, they were bad.  I bought new goggles.  They leaked worse than the old ones!  I bought yet another pair today and will try them on Wednesday.  I've been having some serious equipment malfunctions between running shoes and goggles!

Look at the leaky goggles as good practice for the wave starts where you cop a foot in the face and lose your goggles.

Good goggles are hard to find, I've got a favourite brand I used to use, however after my personal research showed every 1 in 2 leaked really bad I stopped buying them after the 4th pair.  I've gone back to the simplest pairs I can find now

No kidding!  The lady working in the gym childcare said...."look on the bright side, at least your eyes won't be burning while swimming in the river!"  She has a point but Undecided

Is the toenail completely off?  I seem to remember there was no pain once the toenail was completely gone, the only pain I had was when it was still hanging on by a tiny bit.

I'd rip the sucker completely off if not gone already and you should be fine.

Otherwise try putting your foot in a bucket of water for a bit (maybe with some salt?) and get your answer now before you head off in the morning.

No, the booger is hanging on for dear life.  I tried just clipping some off last night so it wasn't bumping into my sneaker and almost keeled over.  And it started bleeding again, which one daughter did not like. (But she DID ask to see it!)  I'll have to try ripping again today...  I do like the salt water technique, I may have to give it a shot!

owl_girl - 2011-07-12 2:21 AM Forgot to mention that I rode in the Tour of Loleta 13 mile fun ride on Sunday.  I rode my husband's mountain bike, which was too big for me, and pulled 30 pounds of toddler in the bike trailer.  There was one steep hill up to the turnaround at a lighthouse.  Several people got off their bikes to walk up the hill.  I powered up and was asked if I had a motor in the trailer.  I responded with "yes, a motor mouth!"

Maybe the swim was longer than Oly distance?  How were times for everyone, overall?

Hard to tell... I gave up 9 minutes to the faster swimmer.  Coming out of the water, my swim split was 96/222.  Swimming is my weakness and I don't expect to be fast here; it was just disappointing to see my actual time after having what I thought was a good swim.

My oldest son did his first triathlon this weekend before my race.  His race consisted of a 50 yard OWS, 4 mile bike, and 1 mile run.  He did great and actually had some very quick transitions.  I'm very proud of him.  The best part, when the race was over, he asked, "when can I do another triathlon?"

The Crescent City Tri on August 14th has a kids race.  It's a pool swim.

rnihill - 2011-07-12 12:52 PM Oh!  But before I go, I have a question for you veterans who have torn off a toenail before...  Is it going to kill tomorrow if I try to swim at the pool?  It looks nasty and like it might sting...  But I desperately need to get in the pool!  But I don't want to wake up early to go over if I'm going to be screaming like a SOB wth every lap.

Hmmm, I am definitely a veteran of lost toenails but mine all seem to come off and the skin be solid beneath them. I vote swim anyway - I reckon it will be fine

Had a fantastic ride tonight.

Decided that if my run goes well tomorrow I will attempt a short brick this seekend.  It will be the first one in a year.  I want it to go well so I can sign up for a sprint this season.  Swim events are okay fun, but they aren't the same as a tri.

I can only hope.  He has about a 26 year head start on me.  Unfortunately, he swims like his Dad.  My middle son has the potential in the water.

I loaded about 12-15 pics from my vacation here.  The resizing and uploading is a pain in the butt, not doing any more.
