KiterChick - 2011-12-29 3:57 PM That's right, you mentioned that before since I remember you and Hubbie are doing the same race. Sorry, I'm doing my best to remember everything about everyone, but there's only so much information my little brain can hold!

Ha.  No worries.

Finally done with my 16 hour days!!

Heading to the gym at 5am tomorrow morning, so excited!

Well I did it.

I bit the bullet and signed up for my Olympic distance triathlon in September.

I'm okay with my sprints in June, I know that I will be able to cover that distance..But an Olympic?  I am freaking out!!

Nice- that was me last year.  I did a Sprint in October 2010, then signed up for the Nautica NYC Oly in August of this year.  I spent 8 or 9 months worrying about making the distance, specifically the swim and the run.  At the end of the day, I just trusted my training plan, did a couple of sprints to help me prepare and just kept the goal in mind.  At the end of the day, my race wasn't pretty, but I got through the distance okay.  This year, I am thinking two Olys and I cannot wait to take another crack at that distance again!

It's really the swim that bothers me....and the bike..and the run...

Ha.   I am going to talk to a swim coach tomorrow about meeting with him for some lessons, I really need them.

Same thing here- I used a swim coach last summer to help me get over some issues I had with swimming in the open water (the fear of the deep/dark), in Jan/Feb I am going a weekend clinic with the same coach to help with some of my many technique issues.

I thought I'd throw out a general point, that everyone may know, but is worth mentioning if that's in fact not the case: bike and tri shorts are meant to be worn without any underwear. Once again, this is likely old news to everyone, but I've found not everyone knows this in the beginning.

I knew about the tri shorts but wasnt sure about the bike shorts! I tried riding the bike shorts with no underwear and was extemely uncomfortable. Hmmm

I could use swim lessons too, that is by far my weakest leg. My physio told me yesterday i didnt have a swimmers body, so i'll have to prove him wrong now hahaha. The idea of open swim coaching sounds useful as the difference between the pool and the surf is huge.

Swimming is by far my weakest area. I have a coach thankfully and the improvements were immediately noticeable. I also do not have a swimmers body and even though I am not afraid of the water I am not relaxed. Very tough for me.

Does anyone know, is there a website that lists swim coaches based on the area that you live in?   I would love to be able to "shop" around a little bit.

Didn't make it to the gym this morning either, my body told me I needed sleep, so I'll go after work.

Tyler, if the distances weren't intimidating, everyone would do it. Good call on getting some sleep, as that's important as well. Sounds like you should have time to get a workout in later today, so then you'll have the best of both worlds. I also opted to sleep in today, and will be on the trainer later.

As for swim coaches, USA Triathlon's website seems to have a search option, but I couldn't get it to work at the moment. I found this site: http://www.totalimmersion.net/find-a-coachthat has coaches in several states listed. You could also potentially reach out to a local race director. My coach is involved in running a local series here, which is where I initially came across her.

Speaking of the swim, I'm with everyone, except for Scott, in that it's my weakest link as well. It's actually become an embarrassment for me, as it's really holding me back in regards for performance. In my two HIMs this past year, I was in the bottom 10% of my AG coming out of the water. It's not uncomfortable for me, I'm just slow. I'm also fortunate, in that I can pass a lot of people once I'm on land, but it would be great if I could come out of the water in a better position. It's my biggest goal for 2012!

Coaches are a great help though, and I'm happy to hear a lot of you are turning to them. I also used to have OWS issues, but mine did work me through that. My current issues are due to poor technique, which I hope to work through this year. I have four sessions coming up in the next two months, the first of which will be January 8th, so I'll let everyone know if I learn any useful tips.

Frances, yes, you're supposed to go commando with bike shorts too. That being said, the point is to prevent chaffing, and thus, make it more comfortable, which doesn't sound like the case for you. It may come back to haunt you though at longer distances. They sell chamois cream that you can slather in there that's supposed to make things more comfortable. I don't use it, but I have a male friend who was putting it all over the inside of his shorts and said he loved it.

Good morning all.  Had a great swim this morning.  Felt really good the entire swim.  I am working on my endurance and technique throughout.

Also went for a 5 mile run.  It was also pretty good.  Running is so relaxing for me.  It's truly my zen time.  Its one of the few times during my day I can go on autopilot.

I am the only one with Scott it seems. Swimming is my best sport by far. I wish it was much longer than it is in a triathlon As they say, you can't win the race on the swim...sadly!

Anyway, I went for a swim today, focused on breaststroke (I am training for swim meets too besides training for triathlons). Now I get to rest until tomorrow morning, when I am going to attempt a 12-mile slow run. I did a 10 miler a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully I'll be OK. And that also means that I get to feel less guilty tomorrow night when I eat

Happy New Year everyone!

Sebastian

Now that sounds too familiar- are you taking the clinic out at Wayside with Megan?  I am in the 7 am class- I'll be the slow guy with the weak kick and bad form.

I did a few oly's last year and I too thought that the swim would get me. But I was supprised to find that I actually did ok. I am not a fast swimmer as it is, I just took my time and maintained a steady and strong stroke. The swim was actually very comfortable for me. The swim to the half way point seemed to take forever but once I hit that point the rest went very quickly.

I am doing a HIM in July and the swim is not my main worry. Its the 56 mile bike ride that will do me in.

Ken and Sebastian, sounds like you guys got in some great workouts yesterday. You're putting me to shame! After I got home from work, I decided I wanted to do the end of my off season "right" by lazing around, watching TV and eating too much, instead of hopping on my trainer. I'm of course regretting that decision now, but hey, life happens sometimes. I'll be sure to get in a run this afternoon, then my 12-week Oly program starts next week, so no more slacking!

Also, Sebastian, I have to add that you left the end off of your swim quote, it's "you can't win the race on the swim, but you can lose it". I've had that happen to me in my AG, which is why I'm so determined to improve on it this year. At the same time, I certainly feel your pain with it being your strongest event, but the shortest segment; that has to be frustrating!

Will, yes, I'm one of Megan's guppies and I'll be at the Wayside. Small world!!! She's great, isn't she? Once I found out it was an option though, I switched to the 8AM group so I can "sleep in" until 6. It's probably for the best, since I'm supposed to be a mentor to all of you, and I can't have you reporting back to everyone that I'm not legit once you see me thrashing around in the water. I swear, I know what I'm talking about on land! Seriously though, Megan was the one who got me through my initial issues with hyperventilating during OWS, and I'm cautiously optimistic that she can speed me up a bit. I told her I'd be happy if she just turns me into an average swimmer. She seems to think there's even more hope for me yet...

Hubbie, it sounds like you and I have a pretty similar swim attitude, slow and steady. It's not going to win a race, but I've found it's much better than thrashing around and hyperventilating! As for the bike, I think you'll be surprised with how fast that is going to pass as long as you've put in the necessary training. Now that I can definitely help you with!

Tyler, I want to do an IM too! I'm signed up for one in September, but as I tell everyone, "Anyone can sign up for an IM, be impressed if I finish!". I'm actually super excited to tackle this thing!

Well, this is likely my last message of 2011. It sounds like we all have ambitious, but completely achievable, goals for 2012. I hope it will be a great year for all of you, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how everyone progresses!

Hope everyone's having a great New Year's weekend.  I got an hour trainer ride in this morning and updated all my logs for the month of December.  Man... what a WEAK month of training.  I can clearly see where my winter weight has come from lol.  Time to get serious... January is almost here!

I know, December has been a slow month.  My HM was at the beginning of December and I have slacked off since then.  But I finished on a good note - 9 mile run around the lake this morning.  Tomorrow I am doing a 5 mile race, so hopefully it will be a good start to the year.

Happy New Years!

Happy New Years!!

I hope it got off to a great start for everyone.  I did a 5 mile race this morning,  I tried to be good and run it easy, like my PT told me to, but I kind of failed at that.  It's hard to do with so many people.  It was also a nice sunny day, just a bit cold (52 to start).  I ran pain free for half the race, then not so much.

Happy New Year everyone!

My 2012 is off to a good start. Not only have I stocked up on healthy foods (goal is to lose 6lbs by my first race in late March), but I also went for a 48M ride outside since we hit a high of 50 today. It was great weather, but the ride itself was quite the slap in the face. It's a loop I did all the time this summer, and let's just say, I am now significantly slower! Good motivation to work hard and build back to where I used to be at least.

Teddie, sorry to hear your race exacerbated your injury. It's always difficult to hold back in that type of setting. Hopefully you at least had fun otherwise, and perhaps you'll just have to lay off the organized races until your injury fully heals.

One more day off, then back to work as usual on Tuesday. Swimming will start back up this week too. Should be interesting after a bit more than two months off...
