My son is coming off a post-college sedentary time and I've been encouraging him to just go outside and walk to get moving before he hits it harder. I think walking is underrated sometimes. Yes, walking is underrated. In fact, when I started this triathlon stuff 3 years ago I was taught the Run/Walk protocol and it was an epiphany for me. I still use it in almost all my runs. Races included. Same here! I started with the Couch to 5K program and I lived for the walk breaks. For me, I've used the walk breaks too much. I still use them but I'm working on increasing my run times. I just did the Vegas 1/2 marathon and my goal was to run the whole thing and I did it. I've learned that when I need a walk break I just slow down a bit to regroup. I know I'll take walk breaks for the marathon but I'm going to work on walking less then I did for my first one. For my son, just walking for now is good for him. He has some extra pounds and would probably just get injured if he started running right away. It's a good place to start There you go!!! Over time my ratio of Run to Walk has changed. Most of my longer runs today are at 9:15 min. Run to 45 sec. Walk (adds up to 10 min. which is easy to track). BTW: I train the walk. It's a fast walk (Right around 14 min. per mile). My wife just laughs at me when she catches in one of those 45 sec. walk periods while driving back from somewhere. Says I look like a total dork. I just swallow my ego!! I wish your son the best of luck. Looks like he has got a great role model!! Edited by junthank 2011-12-21 11:19 PM |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Steve, My name is Okey Akers. I am turning 39 in January and have been out of shape for quite a long time now. I am an athletic director and coach at a Christian High School here in Michigan City, IN. I have decided to change my life and get back into shape. I am entering a local triathlon sprint in August of 2012. I have a small group of students that will be entering with me and we are starting a triathlon/jogging club at school to help each other train. I am new to this sport and could use all the help I can get. I have never been a long distance runner. Sports I was good at was wrestling, football, mountain biking, snowboarding. It has been a long time. I do have a bad knee, so the running aspect scares me. I have found a good quality stability running shoe that I am hoping will help as well. If you are interested in mentoring me and helping me prepair my students to enter this sport I would appriciate that. I look forward to hear from you. Okey Akers

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you have room for another, I'd like to join up. ??Me: 43 with 5 kids, ages 15(g), 14(g), 11(g), 8(g), 7(finally a boy). Live in Murfreesboro, TN southeast of Nashville, TN. Have ran for 3 years and completed several 1/2 and Marathons. Life gets in the way alot (11g) plays on a all boys travel baseball team that takes up a lot of time during the spring and summer, but I have talked the wife into letting me do more training/races this year. Current training: I'm basically just running right now. Looking back on my logs (I currently keep them on Runningahead dot com) I am way below what I have been running the past 3 years. This year I will be around 700 miles running and 800 biking. Hoping that santa brings me a fluid trainer for the bike, so I can begin logging quality workouts this winter. I'll start posting my logs on BT. Even though I did not log many miles this past year, when time permits, I have the ability to train well. 2011 Races - 2 sprint tri's and 1 duathalon. 1 DNF at Music City Tri as I baled during the swim. So I have a lot to accomplish this year and some good motivation. I have to get better at the swim, it is very hard at this point, but admittedly I have not put much time/effort into it. 2012 Races - 2 or 3 sprints. My wife want to get in shape, and I want to pace her in one this year. I also want to do a hard trail run in Chattanooga, the Country Music Half Marathon (shooting for sub 1:40), redemption at the Music City Oly, and capping the running season running the Battlefield Marathon in November. My goal triathlon will be Augusta 70.3 in September, so we will see about the other road races. 2012 Goals - improve on the swim and the bike. I have lots of great rolling hills around where I live and some local Tri and Bike groups. Hopeing that my local Y will start up a Masters swim class, but no word yet. I'd like to crack 1:40 in the half mary and 3:45 in the Full. I'd like to be around 5 hours for the 70.3 in September. I guess 2500 bike miles and 1200 run miles would be a good goal. My bigger goal is IM COZ in November 2013, so I'd like to have a good tri season this year to build on next year. Weight loss - I'm about 12 pounds over my ideal race weight of 155. I know when I hit around 150 miles per month, the weight comes off, so I'm not too worried at this point. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Okey and Chris. It sounds like it's going to be a great 2012 for both of you. Okey, I think that's so cool that you're getting some of your students to train with you. They'll keep you going Chris, since my 3 kids are adults now and 2 are girls, I have to smile at those ages. Fun times ahead! Just got back from a 5 mile run. Laura, my youngest ran 2 miles with me and I really didn't feel like turning off to finish my run but a point for me for doing it. Feeding at the barn and the holiday disruption (even though I love it) makes it hard to be real focused on workouts but that is the time of year. Next month when I have no excuses I'll have to whine about something else Johanne |

New user ![]() | ![]() What do y'all think about the spinerval dvds/ any trainer dvd really. I just rode for the first time on a trainer this morning and I loved it. I thought it was a great workout! I feel that sometimes on my bike rides I stop exerting any force to the petals really, but with the dvd it was a whole new experience on the bike. I did a quick 40 minute workout and was drenched at the end. Has anyone had success using these programs? |

I've used sufferfest videos, they are fun, a built in structure, but it can be challenging to stay within certain HR zones if that is your goal. I liked "Angels", "Fight Club" and "Revolver". I saw him use them once and he had a great workout. I'm not sure why he hasn't used them since other than he'll get on the trainer and watch a football game or he gets on so early that he doesn't want to wake anyone. I should pull them out for myself! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() TYLER - Welcome to the wild and woolly world of Spinervals! Most are not for the faint of heart, and even though I am a fairly strong cyclist, I have been "dropped" by Coach Troy many times. The rating system should be taken seriously in order to not feel/get buried, although the option is to just do what you can.......and return (or not....) later for the rest! The option is to park the trainer in front of the TV and either watch midless action movies, or dopey daytime "reality" shows. They work about as effectively to pass the time as do the Spinervals. (I wonder if Judge Judy might be Coach Troy's mother.) Edited by stevebradley 2011-12-22 12:47 PM |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okey, Greetings from your fellow Hoosier. Sounds like fun working with your school kids. I teach at a high school near Bloomington, Indiana. I used to coach football and swimming once upon a time. Do you have an FCA program? If so, there is a subgroup called FCA Endurance you might look into. I signed up for it last summer. There is another Christian tri group called Tri4Him. I don't know anything about it otherwise. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello All, I just want to thank everyone for your input on the cadence and the HR. All I can say is WOW, the amount of help this group give is AWESOME. Steve Im using a Garmin 305. I guess I will need to see about dialing doing on the run to keep the HR lower, just like most of you said it sounds strange because the pace I was running at was really slow, but I guess I can deal with slow if it will prevent injury and help me build up to a good pace. I will keep everyone posted how the HR running goes. Again thank you so much for your replies.

I do feel that it has improved my bike fitness. However, I'd buy more than one because I can recite verbatim every word Coach Troy says in the one I have. I need to buy a few more. Too bad there isn't a "Spinervals Swap" somewhere online. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Hello - I am a female 55 yrs old in Florida. I am about to sign up for my first small Tri. It's a 1/4 open water swim 10 mile bike ride and a 3.1 run. I have just lost a bunch of weight by April of next yr I will be under 200. I have a personal trainer and the gym is doing a biggest loser style contest starting 1/1/2012 for 3 months. I enter local 5k runs and have been doing the muddy obstacle ones. But the Tri intrigued me. I think I can do it. Before I do sign up I wondered how the transtion from water to bike to running works. Can you explain? Are people all gung ho or are there beginners? |

Hi, you will exit the water at the designated area-and run or walk to a "transition area" where your bike and running shoes etc are set up, strip the wetsuit, grab your helmet and bike and run to the mount line before starting the bike. All this will be briefed to you before the race. Also there are tons of threads on the topic, a few youtube videos and articles on the topic of transitions alone. Practice them, keep it simple and don't let it intimidate you. Most people wear their tri shorts and a top under the wetsuit-easier and faster than trying to put something on when wet. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi all,and thanks to Steve for having me. Had a bit of a technical problem. Apparently, I was banned from posting! Mike from BT quickly sorted it out. Name: Dave, 39 Background: After focusing on work, family, and watching TV for most of my 30s and finding myself unable unwilling to stick with any physical activity for a prolonged amount of time, I got back into swimming by joining a masters team in September 2010. I swam in high school and have found that swimming is one thing that I'm better than average at and that I will stick with. After I while, though, I wanted to compete and found that there are very few masters meets in my area. Someone at masters mentioned triathlons; I looked into it and found that I like the training, complexity, diversity, gear!, and people of multi-sport. I joined the Pittsburgh Triathlon Club http://www.pittsburghtriathlonclub.com/ and have done a number of training events with them and made some new friends. I don't know about you folks, but there's no better motivator than having a race looming! Family: I've been married for 16 years and have two daughters ages 10 & 11. We live near Pittsburgh. Current Training: Our tri club is competing in the USAT National Club Challenge http://www.racetracker.ca/usat/ so I've ramped up the swimming this month. I'm up to almost 20 miles for the month of December. Trying to hit 150 miles by year end, and I need to average a little over 3,000 yards for the last 5 practices to make it. I'll throw a run, spinning class, or a bike ride in to round things out, but I really don't know what I'm doing in the dry disciplines. In January I'm starting a half marathon training program through a local running shop, so i'm excited to have some real run coaching for the first time. Also bought myself a fluid trainer for Christmas, so I have that and a treadmill available for when the weather gets bad. My training log is on the USMS site, but I'll get around to transcribing the recent sessions over to BT soon. 2011 Races: I did two sprints in 2011: Pittsburgh and North Park. Had a great experience. Finished in the top 10% in the swim and top third overall at Pittsburgh. I didn't think that was too bad for just buying my road bike in June, but there is certainly room for much cycling and running improvement! 2012 Races Here's what I have so far: February - Run Outta Our Mine 5K in a limestone mine and CFH Indoor mini-sprint Tri; March - Masters Swim Meet; May - Pittsburgh Half Marathon; June - PTC Triathlon Camp and contemplating the MS150; July - Pittsburgh Olympic Tri; August - North Park Sprint Tri 2012 Goals: Stay injury free (I finally seem to be recovering from a nasty bout of ITBS), train more consistently, and finish each race competitively. Not quite sure what that means yet since I'm not sure what I'm capable of in the bike or run. Weightloss: Since starting masters, I'm down from about 210 to about 190. I'm 6'3". It cracked me up when Macca was complaining about how big he is for a triathlete at 5'11" 150 lbs! Good mentee: I'm constantly trying to learn new things, and I'm anxious to become a better runner and cyclist. Looking forward to interacting with all of you! Edited by davekeith 2011-12-22 2:55 PM |

So, no triathlons last year. Hope to do a few sprints and maybe more in 2012. I will post a bio once I know if I am in or not! |
