The oatmeal idea sounds great for early morning cold runs! Thank you!

Good run this morning! 3.7 miles is 2.7 more miles than I can run straight!

28!?!? I wish! I love running in cold weather. Our high today is going to be 70.

Thanks for the help on the protein shake. I think I may try it for dinner after a long workout.

Thank you for replying!

I am trying to build a little muscle but still lose weight. My husband told me that it helps with recovery after a hard workout but he only workouts out to stay in shape, he doesn't race or anything. I am trying to get the max out of my body from what I am doing.

I don't have a running or biking background but I do have a swimming background. I never drank protein shakes or muscle milk when I swam competitively. With adding running, biking, and a little more weights, I'm just not sure what to do. And I don't quite trust my husband since he has never done any training like this before

I do track my food and exercise on an iPhone app called My Fitness Pal. It helped me lose 70 pounds and hopefully i can lose the other 70 with it

My running is going well. I am on the Couch to 5k plan because I am a very weak runner. Currently I can run a little over a mile. My longest I have run was 20 minutes straight without stopping.

When I do running races I run/walk it. The only problem I had with my last/first half marathon was my feet. The shoes that i bought had minimal cushioning and with 2.5 miles left my walk slowed to a crawl. That and i was dehydrated from being sick with strep throat and a severe sinus infection and not hydrating myself properly before the race.

This time around I have better cushioned shoes, I'm not sick (planning not to), and I now how to hydrate myself.

I don't want to injure myself before, should i skip the half marathon or give myself more time to recover after? All of this except the swimming is new to me and I'm kind of learning as I go.

Well, I guess it depends partly on what your goals are, and what motivates you. If you're planning on walking a good bit of the half-marathon, you will probably be able to finish it okay, but you may be sore afterward. I suspect that for the most part part, the foot pain you experienced last time had less to do with the cushioning of your shoes, and more to do with the fact that your feet and legs were just not adapted to walking/running that kind of distance. When most of that is walking, soreness is probably all you need to worry about, but if you try to run more of the distance and you haven't really built up to it, you might risk injuring yourself.

If having that half-marathon on your calendar motivates you, and you're okay with taking the pace very easy, then you're probably okay. If you would be more motivated by finishing a race that you can run the full distance and try to go a little faster, then maybe you could consider training for a 5K or 10K early in the year, and work toward a half-marathon later in the season.

I will be walking the majority of it. When I do run I am a very slow runner.

The only reason I am doing this particular half-marathon is because it is the first ever Louisiana Marathon/Half Marathon and it is in my town. Don't get me wrong, I want to do it but I chose it mainly because of that. Plus this is a flat, fast course. I was training for it but sickness, wisdom teeth extraction followed by an infection, and the holidays sidelined me.

The next race after this one is a 10k. That will be much manageable. I should be up to running the first part of the race by then and then run/walk the second 5k.

I always seem to bite a little too much off. I just don't want to get injured.

Hi guys! Happy New Year!  I've gotten some workouts in over the holidays, but not as many as I had hoped.  The swimming has been ok, but the running and biking not so much.  I did get a short ride in yesterday and I tried clipping in.  I didn't fall.  It was the first time I tried the clipless pedals since a friend of mine worked with me on getting used to clipping in and out.  We spent about an hour on her trainer, just clipping in and out.  It really helped a lot.

My race calendar for this year is:

12/31  Resolution Run 5K

1/15    Houston Marathon

2/25   Rodeo Run 10K

3/17 & 3/18 Seabrook Pelican challenge 1/2 M Saturday & 1/2 M Sunday

4/15   Austin 10/20

4/29   Kemah Sprint Triathlon

Possibly a pool sprint in June

I didn't realize I had tthis much planned until I wrote it down.

I'm hoping to get into a swim/bike/run schedule I can follow for the Spring after I get through the marathon.

@LSU - my fastest half with a 18min PR was my hilliest and I ran/walk the whole race. I ran 3 mins and walked 1 min. The race i PR'd from was gently rolling and I ran the whole thing. I prefer to run and only walk water stops but there is something to be said about run/!!walking. THe key is to be consistent from the start. Got that from Jeff Galloway training.

@onetwotri - I was scared to go clipless. I chickened out and got combo pedals. One side is regular platform pedal and the other side is clipless. Works either away. Glad to see u doing it. Maybe it will give me courage.

Does everyone ride a road bike? Anyone with a hybrid or flat bar road?

Lovey, my pedals are like yours, one side regular and one side clipless.  I knew that I wanted to try and learn how to ride with the clipless pedals, but I wasn't ready.  If you have a trainer or have access to a spin bike, just clip and unclip for a good while until it feels more comfortable.  Plus I changed my cleats to the multidirectional ones (they make it easier to unclip), that helped a lot.

I have a hybrid bike too!  Road bikes scare me still.  My parents wouldn't let me learn how to ride a bike until I was 12.  I got a bike then and learned how to ride it, but never rode enough to get comfortable on it.  I had a mountain bike for a while, but didn't ride it very much, but I sold it.  I decided to get a hybrid because it was less expensive and if I decided the tri thing wasn't for me, it would be a good all-around bike to have.  I'm still a long way from a road bike, but I'm making progress.

I use the Galloway method. I did well my first half in October but my last two miles my feet were linking me. They felt like they were being stabbed on the bottoms of my feel to I slowed down to basically a crawl. Mile 11 to 12 I did a 20 minute mile and mile 12 to 13 I did a 25 minute mile. I am just happy I finished!

This time I plan to be much more consistent. Last time I also had a severe sinus infection, strep throat, and ended up dehydrated. I will be much more prepared and healthy! I am hoping to PR between 2:50:00 to 3:10:00. My first time was a 3:33:21. At least I wasn't last and I finished :D

I want to eventually work up to running non stop but that will take plenty of time to work up to. I don't get how people run and drink water. I get it everywhere!!! I have to walk and drink my water when I get to the station.

Yes I am.  A friend of mine wants to do it and asked me to do it with her.  Hey! It's better than what she originally wanted to do, the Goofy Challenge.  That one is a half marathon on Saturday and a full marathon on Sunday.  She changed her mind after we finished the Marine Corps Marathon last year.  She's decided that from now on she's only doing half marathons.

So jealous of people with warmer weather that can get in some sprints and run early in the year.

Hope everyone has a safe New Year's Eve.  Hopping on the trainer soon to get in the last bike workout of 2011!  Planning a long trainer ride tomorrow to welcome in the new year right.

Hey all! What a great week spent with my wife and kids but definitely not very productive from a fitness perspective. It's only been 5 months since I started exercising and I'm really excited about what I will accomplish in 2012.

I hope everyone has a happy new year!

Ending 2011 on a high note. I did yard work for an hour, and did C25K: Week 6- Day 3.

Hoping 2012 brings as much excitement and success as I had in 2011! Happy New Years everyone!

I'm psyched to say that I finished 2011 on a strong note!

I got in a 3.6 mile run today (outside, in he damp cold air). That means that I met both my goals for this week!

Happy New Year Every One!

I'm also looking for the good 1/2 marathon for March..something New England/Mid-Atlantic and cheap (I have my eye on Sleepy Hollow 1/2) but wonder if anyone else had some good ones.

Hello, my neighbor to the south-

I'm doing my first half-mary in March 18,  in Quincy, Mass.   http://halfofquincy.com/   It's on the south side of Boston, so you don't have to go through the city.  Cheap entry, seems like a friendly event; this will be only the second year of this race.

A friend of mine loves - and recomends - Hyannis in February; there's a half, a full marathon, and a relay.  2/26/12.  http://www.hyannismarathon.com/

Goodluck!

Cheers,

Erin

Here's a pretty good list of Half Marathons: http://www.halfmarathons.net/race_calendar_mar.html The only one I have any personal knowledge of is Caesar Rodney in Delaware. I've never run it myself, but several friends have and it has a good reputation.

Thanks for the recommendations on the half.  I'll start looking into them.

My only race for sure is REV3 half at Quassy in June.   I'm just going to play the rest of the season by ear since I'm trying to go back to work and never really sure of my hubby's travel schedule.  I'd like to get up to Maine for the REV3 at Old Orchard Beach.

Happy New Year!!
