Like QUA17 I enjoy a Mirror Pond Pale Ale - out of Bend, OR I believe.  Like to support local brews which there are plenty in Oregon.

I have been going to a massage therapist for some work on my calves.  I had three recent right calf strains and another runner suggested I try her massage therapist.  It has worked wonders for me.  So today at my last session she tells me that it looks like my left hip is tilted forward.  She checked it later by seeing if my leg lengths were even.  Well to say the least they are not; about an inch shorter on the right side.  As much as I didn't want to go to a massage therapist (mainly money) I have learned so much and my legs and other body parts are benefiting from it.  I now have some new information that may assist me with what is going on with my right side of my body; mainly knee pain and calf strains.  I notified the Chiropracter she recommended to see if I can get a consultation about ways to bring it back into alignment.  Hope to be running with both legs the same length by my half marathon on April 29th.

No training tonight but hopefully tomorrow evening.  I may be AWOL for a day or two while I get re-registered for me Silver Membership.  Renewal date snuck up on me.  Due tomorrow.  Not sure if they'll give me a day or two.

Happy training.

My chiropractor has increased my quality of life EXPONENTIALLY! The same thing happens to me, and he's usually able to get it back to normal within a few adjustments. Actually, here is something funky happening with my left hip right now, but I know he can pop it back into place. He has also prescribed custom orthotics (the real problem turned out to be semi flat-feet) which help a LOT. ... though unfortunately kept me out of the military (as a MUSICIAN... don't know why they couldn't have let that slide!

I am also curious about bike fit. I keep getting different opinions on how I should set up my bike. When I originally got my bike they measured and fit me on my bike and gave me the option of a slightly longer stem which I decided to go along with. Now at a different store I am told I should go with an even longer stem and raise my seat.

Does fit make a huge difference? I did get a stiff upper back on my last ride, but I just chalked that up to being new on the bike.

Another question: How do you fuel on longer bike rides? At what point to you refuel with more then just water and what do you eat/drink?

You are going to get a lot of different feedback on fueling on the bike.  Preference is highly individual so I would recommend experimenting with a variety of different choices on training rides.

Just to give you an example, here is what works for me. Rides around an hour I just stick with water.  2 hours I'll bring along a bottle of sports drink (my preference in gatorade endurance). 3 hours I will contemplate bringing along a clif bar or some clif shot blocks for some solid food.  If I'm going longer (ie IM training) I've become a huge fan of using Infinit (used in both IMs I've done).  It's a sports drink too, and I like to put enough in to make a concentrated bottle of about 600-800 calories. Then I just sip on that and take in water at the same time and one bottle will last me three hours.

Hopefully others will chime in with their preferences. There are a lot of options out there and it takes a bit of experimentation to figure out what works for you

For rides under 2 hrs I'm similar to Neal. 1-2 hrs I will use water/GU brew. For 3 hrs I will add in some GUs and once rides start getting longer than that I usually add in solid foods. For my IM bike I ate: a banana, some "real fruit" gummies, Pretzels, power bar and GUs and electrolytes. I get a bit of flavor and texture fatigue with GUs and I found mixing it up a bit helps. I do not have a lot of GI issues with nutrition though. Some people have very sensitive stomachs so always test out things in training before trying it in a race.

Sounds like everyone had a great weekend! Training is picking up and it's exciting to hear about races comming up for everyone! I have my 3rd HM in 2 weeks, Did my last long run yesterday before the HM, 20km done... went on par.... but there is so much wind this year it's really annoying to have to plough through!!!

Doing my longest swim to date 3000m tonight...I'm really dreading it!!!As much as I practice I just can't seem to enjoy it ...it's more of a get it done because I know I have to!!!

I'm a big fan of beer too, for you fellow Albertans, Melissas Road Race is a great one as you get a beer ticket for the end included in your race package. There is no better way to finish a half marathon race in the beautiful mountains then with a beer!!! (or two)

My hip & calf was slightly tight today from my tempo run yesterday, so I decided to take an "easy" day today and just go to yoga and swim (had been planning on lifting).  So I went to the pool after my yoga class at the gym, and it was closed for cleaning Frown  There weren't even any signs anywhere telling people they were doing that, and I had to ask the maintenance staff when they would re-open the pool (Friday).

So I guess I'm not swimming until Friday!  That's sad, since this would have been my first swim since probably October!

Anyway, to chime into the nutrition conversation, I use a similar pattern as Melissa & Neal, with increasing the strength of my beverage as the rides get longer.  Just water for under an hour; Heed for rides up to 3 hours.  If I'm going 2-4 hours, I might do Heed with some gu's.  I use Perpetuem for rides longer than 3-4 hours.  I do a similar thing as Neal with making a concentrated bottle of Perp in one bottle, and sip it with water.

Brian - please let me know how this goes.  I have been having leg problems for years now and I too have been seeing a message therapist with decent results.  I wish I had more money to spend on these sessions and my legs feel almost energized following them.  I'm thinking about seeing a chiropractor too but would like to hear whether or not it is worth the money/time.

I went running this evening after my massage yesterday.  My right calf is awfully sore.  This happened two weeks ago after the massage as well.  She did a pretty deep one.  It tends to recover quickly.  Not as sore as last time.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I have never been to a Chiropracter so a little nervous, but that is what I said about a massage therapist.  On the modest side!

How did the swim go??

I hear ya on the beer. At the HM in Huntington Beach, you get 2 beer after the race...That is one great tasting beer after you run a HM.

At the Heart of the Rockies Tri they had Holsteiner(sp?) non alcoholic last year. It was my first oly and let me tell I had 4 down the hatch before I knew what was going on!

I did it! Wow that was 500m more then I have ever swam and only 800m short of IM distance! It wasn't fast by any means but I got it done! Definintly a break through for me since swimming is my weakest.

Ohhh non-alcoholic beer after hey? interesting!

QUESTION- for you all, Do you train with or without music? I always train with music but on races you can't. I have heard mixed thoughts, training without is better so that on race day you don't rely on it....but I think we do so much training for our races that why not pep it up a bit and listen to music especially to get through those tougher training days!!! Comments???

and on that note, any favorite songs out there you listen to while training? I need to re-do my HM play list!

I've sort of been MIA for a bit, my half marathon is this Sunday so the past few weeks have been mainly focused on that training with spinning 1x a week.  I'll have one week off after that and then Sunday the 22nd my official HIM training starts (finally!) so I'll be giving more frequent updates that include more than just running.

No, it does not hurt. There is a table that you lay on, the position depending on how you need to be adjusted. To give an over simplification, they find what needs to be adjusted and apply pressure to pop it back into place, or at least as much as is possible in that visit. It's an "ahhhh" feeling, not an "AHH!" feeling. Like I've said, I can't express enough how much of a positive difference my chiropractor has made. I go once a month whether I think I need it or not, just for maintenance. Usually I do actually need it, so insurance winds up covering half.

I train with on my runs.  I can keep everything in front of me, and I've only been hit by a car once, but I was too aggressive for 6:00 a.m. at an intersection and learned my lesson there.  On the bike, I do not, only because I'm new to it all and like to hear the cars coming up from behind and it all happens way faster on a bike.  I do not have the $160 or so to get an underwater device, or I'd think this would be most beneficial to break up the boring laps in the pool, especially distance swims.

Nice swim BTW.  That's an impressive total.

I would do it again if it was a local race.  This was a "destination race" for me so to speak.  If I'm traveling for a race I like to keep the locales/races different so I can enjoy a new experience

Congrats on a great swim!

As far as music goes I usually listen during run training, but never while biking.  I run primarily on trails so I don't have to worry about hearing traffic too much and I find music just helps pass the time.  When racing though, I never listen to music.  I think it helps me stay in tune with my body more (I know that sounds cheesy) and I like to take in the whole atmosphere. I've never missed it during a race.

Have a great race at the Half. Looking forward to a race report.I am doing a Practice Half this weekend (14 miler- last long run) in prep for my Half Marathon on April 29th in Eugene Oregon. We have a couple in our group that this will be their longest run ever so we are going to celebrate after with a tailgate party. The Half on the 29th for me will be a fun run with a couple of other runners who run at my same pace. I haven't run with anyone else in any race previously so I am kind of looking forward to it.

Wow, a lot of you guys are doing half marathons! Good luck. How long did it take you to train for your first half? To answer the music question I hate running without music and I desperately need to update my playlist since I have not downloaded anything in probably 5 years. I don't even have iTunes on my current computer. I have a few questions tonight. For those of you who have done a HIM how much did you swim leading up to it? I need to start training. I'm thinking 2x/ wk for 3000- 3500 (about an hour for me) is probably what I can put in, maybe one more. Also, what cadence on do you usually ride your bike at? I don't know much about road biking but my spin bike has cadence on it and in the class the instructor talks about it.

Swimming 2x weekly for that distance is enough. You prob don't even need to go 3000-3500 each session, but if you can that is great. As far as cadence: depends. I am a mid cadence rider. I generally probably spin around 90 rpm in a larger ring rather than mashing at a lower rpm Ina smaller ring. Generally I think triathletes prefer mid-high cadences. Even for hills I will ride in my largest rings and "spin" up to the top rather than mashing on my pedals. You can do quick checks for yourself by counting how many single pedal strokes you take in 6 sec and multiplying by 10. Not super accurate but it gives you an idea of your approx rpm.

Half Marathon - This is my 6th Half.  Currently 4 Half Marthons and 1 HIM.  I believe for my first half marathon I used a 12 week plan.  I just continued on running after tri season and did a Half Marathon in Oct. and one in Jan. that year.  I was planning for my first HIM that coming June.

As for the swim...I trained about twice a week in the pool for about 2200-2800 yds at the most for my HIM.  Any more than that then my right shoulder would begin hurting.  When late April early May came around I hit the OWS regularly instead of the pool once  week.

Bike cadence...probably spinning around 85-90;  I don't like to mash real hard as well.  My only HIM was a real hilly bike so I didn't do much spinning.  I am trying to sue my HRM more in determining my effort.

Training notes:20 minutes into a lunch swim and got hauled out of pool yesterday...forgot to take my son his lunch he had forgotten....bad dad....

Also have gout in my foot so swimming this morning instead of running.

Wow- that's not what I was thinking when I heard hauled from the pool! Glad you're okay. How long have you had gout? What usually triggers a flare up? Do you take meds? I'm just curious bc they are looking into if my husband has it and we've been talking to more and more endurance athletes in their 30s/ 40s that do when it was traditionally a sedentary old man disease (Melissa, do you need a research project for med school?)Thank you for the advice on half marathons HIMs and biking. It's scary what starts to seem do-able at some point. Esp considering I've never been an endurance athlete. In college my specialty was the 50 free and I ran the 110 hurdles in high school track.

I have had gout for the past 10-15 years. My father and brother both have it as well. I only take pills when I have a flare up. A lot of times it is dietary issues that cause the flare up. I don`t have it nearly as much as I used to when I weighed in the 290`s. More likely because I eat better than weight loss.

Trust me I was never an endurance athlete! Smile I still don't consider myself one...Oly's and HM are my limit.

amhale2000 - 2012-04-11 2:42 PMI've sort of been MIA for a bit, my half marathon is this Sunday so the past few weeks have been mainly focused on that training with spinning 1x a week.  I'll have one week off after that and then Sunday the 22nd my official HIM training starts (finally!) so I'll be giving more frequent updates that include more than just running.

Great idea with the tailgate party! I am not sure about a HM being a fun run though...Laughing
