magic - 2013-05-11 8:39 PM Here's a pic from our local velodrome, shaking out the track cobwebs during our preseason races this month

Very cool.  Is that as intense as it looks?

ya, its mentally tough and when you go for a sprint win you'll get major tunnel vision the closer to the line you get. Last night I brought about 7/10 mental game and 8/10 legs. Was able to hang with some of the Cat 1/2 guys but was missing jumps and gaps and not in the right group when breaks happened. Good preseason racing for sure. Our old Tri coach used to tell me everytime we do power and lactate testing that I should race track, wish I'd done so 25 years ago. At least I can afford to look fast :) now. There are so many different races and ways to get points out there its a thinking game. Some races like Scratch races (first one at the end wins) are like checkers and simple to figure out, progressive points and snow balls and Aussie pursuits and other races are a bit more like playing chess. Two weeks ago Tyler Farrar was racing with us in prep for the Tour of California. He's fast for sure (was a junior national champ on the track) but we do have a mix of national champs and some ex Olympians (female) that race and where gunning for Tyler for sure. Couple of them managed to win some intermediate sprints off him.

Well that is a whole lotta awesome, though I don't know any of those races or their strategy.  Is it indoors, and if so, why is the season also in the summer?  Silly question, but I don't know anything about the sport:)  You look like a BAMF.

Local track is outdoors and 400m long. We are near Seattle and rain cancels as the track gets too slick. Means preseason is May and the season starts end of May/early June. There is an indoor track just north of here in Vancover I will try to ride this season. There's a track south of us in Portland and there might be an other one in BC I don't recall off the top of my head. Our track is one of the longest ones, most are 250m long. Its a blast for sure. Makes passing people in Tris seem very tame but on the wrong side. On the track you mostly pass on the right (up track), typically passing on the left is dangerous and frowned on.

I'm hoping to get through my first marathon this year.  I would like to drop a bunch of weight before go-time.  Consider this a "before" picture with 25 weeks to go.

Hotel treadmill in Kansas

First marathon? Cool. Which one? You look pretty muscular--how much weight are you hoping to lose?

I plan on doing the Marine Corpse Marathon at the end of October.  I would like to drop about 30 lbs.  I just started back to weight training and the weight loss stopped right away.  I'm training my son for football and in the process, my bench is already back up over 300lbs.  I used to be a gym rat with the pinnacle of those days being a 380lb bench at 190lbs.  I would like to see that again now that I'm an old dude.

That's interesting.  The first thing I noticed is that you look like a strong dude.  Have you had your body comp checked?  What is it and what would it be if you lost 30lbs of fat (not muscle)?  It's just you look to me like a guy who is big and strong, and I'm just wondering if you have 30lbs of fat to lose?

It may be difficult to keep lifting and training for a marathon and lose 30lbs.  You sound (and look) like the kind of guy who builds lean mass readily.  I also know it is difficult when I'm lifting to back it down once I'm in the weight room--that ego's a real trip but maybe it would be easier/more efficient to focus on the running and fat loss form that, get to your race weight, and then work your strength training back in?  This is coming from another I-just-look-at-the weights-and-starting-getting-big person who's also run a lot of marathons.

Marine Corps is an AWESOME one, btw.  Good for you.

No.. it's corpse.. Didn't you hear that the President changed it.  ;-)  I have a lot of Marine buddies from my Navy days.  I use that with them all the time.  Obama's "Marine Corpse"  and the SNL's usage of the word "strategery" while poking fun of G.W. are in m regular vocab.

As far as the weight goes, I know that as I train until failure I will begin shredding away bodyfat and get cut up.  When I did Savageman I stopped lifting and I really didn't lose the weight like I normally do.  I will be shifting legs to more of a high rep, less weight but the upper body will still be "go heavy or go home."  I just do triathlons and try the long-distance running to stay outside my comfort zone and to continue to show my kids that you can do whatever you want as long as you have a plan.  I know I don't look the part but that's part of the point.

Not that I don't like your avatar--totally g2g--but it does not quite do you the same level of justice as this race pic.  Great smile.

Quite a bit!  I don't drink anymore, and confidence has gone way up.  Now I look to the next race vs. the next meal.  LOL!  Have been dealing with a few injuries this past year though.  Had RC repair 6 months ago and still coming back from that and a nagging rear hip pain that flares up after 5 or 6 miles running that I've been trying to figure out.

Awesome Magic!  How's the track season going?

Now I know you're also a fast swimmer (sub 1h IM swim?, right?).  Dang.  What races do you have on tap for the tri season?

In the skinsuit thread I don't think I was clear. My trainer buddy is also a very fast swimmer. He is sub one hour in every IM he's done. My best IM swim was right at one hour in IMCOZ, but then everyone seemed to have a fast swim there that year.

I'm gonna schedule in some local shorter Tri's this season. Have not locked on which ones yet.
