  1. wound management - if you crash (which I do when I'm mtn biking) you lose less skin and it's much easier to deal with.

Chicks dig scars

I'm sure you're right. I've got plenty from 20 years of mountain biking

When I go visit my three year old nephew, who is obsessed with band-aids, he immediately runs into the bathroom and comes back with two or three band-aids to put on my legs, he thinks the scars still require bandages. It's fun walking around the house with Spiderman band-aids on my legs...

MrSolis - 2007-05-24 10:57 AM This will be my last week before tapering. Based on my distances do you have any sugestions for my taper week? Thanks

Tapering is a pretty complex topic with various opinions, options, etc. - but the most common advice is to cut back on volume by around 50%, but maintain intensity and possibly frequency. So you're doing shorter workouts, but probably the same amount of workouts (although I tend to cut back a bit to get extra rest) and you're still going pretty hard. So, if I'm usually running for 2 hours on Tuesday at 10 min/mile, I'll run for 30-40 minutes at 8:00/mile, or something like that. If in doubt, I always tend to opt for more rest - taper week is really about resting up and "absorbing" all your training, but you want to keep some intensity to keep yourself fresh.

Over time, you figure out what works best for you - the fun of learning

Another good reason to shave those legs!!

Matt -
Thanks for all the info - wow you are very strict with your diet. I would like to learn more about ratios of carbs - protiens etc as I start to work out more. I lost the 30 lbs with weight watchers. It has been the easiest plan for me with three kids eating at crazy times and on the go. I will probably try to loose the last 15 on this plan but as I log my nutrition I would love to get some insight into how I can make the diet better. Ie don't know if I am getting enough protein for my exercise plan. I'm going to log the food in the comments section for now - maybe I will try and incorporate it into the nutrition log and see how it compares to strict calorie counting.

Thanks -

Strict, but not unyielding. I feel its important to shake it up sometimes so I don't get into a rut personally, but also to give your body something else to react to.

I'll be watching those logs!

Scott,
Thanks for the advice

BTW, I found a pair of De Soto TRI shorts at Trisports.com for 24 dollars. I tried them last weekend and I liked them.
My weekend went as good as Aaron, OWS was not good at all, I strained my neck while swiming (tring to look up where I was going) but I am also exited, I just received my registration confirmation for my first Tri in June 9th

Matt - Jeez, maybe I should start shaving my legs more regularly.

Laurie - I have the weirdest tan lines too because I bike every day. White hands and brown arms. White feet, a section of brown leg, white thighs. Lately I've been rolling up my bike shorts one roll one day, two rolls on another day so that the tan fades out a bit instead of being a harsh line. Looks better than last year.

I wonder what she'll say when you start shaving your legs

I'm not going there for a while.... Then again .... At what distance did you start? I just changed my August registration to Olympic. I don't think I'm ready for shaving my legs.

I actually started in high school - imagine the crap I took for that! Now I just do it for three main reasons:

  1. aesthetics - I get lots of compliments on my "creamy dreamy calves" - that's an actual quote from a woman on the tri team
  2. wound management - if you crash (which I do when I'm mtn biking) you lose less skin and it's much easier to deal with
  3. psychological - there's something ritualistic and soothing about shaving - it makes me "feel" like a cyclist/triathlete.
But, quite obviously, it's not for everyone

Laurie - there are some good online places to count calories (a little simpler than here I'm afraid). I use Sparkpeople.com but some people use fitday.com too.

I think you'll like the shorts- DeSoto makes a very high quality product. I have a pair of their tri shorts and use them for just riding/running as well...

As for sighting - it's definitely something that takes some practice. Keep at it and it will become second nature and require much less effort. Try practicing in the pool for a few laps.

Congrats on registering! You're committed now

Now I think 75% of my workouts are going on before work or before 10am on the weekends. Sounds good, but I'm doggg tired by 6:00p when I get home from work.

4:00am is not being a morning person. You are more of a "couple hours until the sun comes up" person....

I'm looking forward to the kids and Jamie being out of school. That will free up my mornings for workouts again.

What's up group? How's everyone's weekends looking like? Am I the only one racing this weekend? Yikes.

Anyways, starting to get worked up and psyched for the race. My only concern is the swimming. Not sure how I'm going to react in the OWS/Lake. I don't like it, but let's hope I calm down and "Just Do It" I'll put a RR up on Monday afternoon during my lunch.

Rock on.

You are going to be so amped up, you won't have time to be concerned with the swim. You'll do great.

I started working on a little theory last weekend, when I was traversing Duck Lake. I was getting uncomfortable when I lost sight of the bottom of the lake. Towards the end of the swim, which I will classify as a struggle, I tried to keep an image of my destination in my mind's eye. It was the same image as what I saw when I would lift my head to sight my landmark. I just kept thinking about holding a straight line to the landmark, and focusing on my breathing cadence. It seemed to help at the end. I started to tune out that I was physically looking at when my face was down in the water, and just "see" my destination in my head.

I haven't been back in any lakes since then to test it further, but I certainly will on my next attempt. When I do get back into a lake for an open swim, I'm going to imagine a giant ladder laid out to my landmark. Each stroke is going to be like "climbing" that horizontal ladder.

Visualization is a cool thing. If you haven't tried it before, give it a shot.

I don't think I've mentioned this to you all, but I used to be a golf pro. Not a professional golfer, but a golf pro, as in a teaching pro. The one major step that took me from a decent college golfer to a scratch player was visualization. I learned to "draw" a line from my ball to its intended destination with my club head, then close my eyes and picture the flight of the ball (high, low, fade, draw). The results were incredible and something that I could not duplicate with physical improvements alone.

I got a tag along bike for my youngest to ride behind me. I was going to go out and try it on Wednesday but the weather was terrible. Today is not much better. Has anyone tried on of these. I am going to have to take her with me on some of my rides. She is out of school for the next 5 weeks.

I haven't tried one, but I've wanted to take one for a spin. My oldest daughter (7) has taken a couple good spills and still doesn't want to ride by herself. I thought a tagalong style attachment might give her the confidence to strike out on her own. Either that, or I'll just wait until my 6yo daughter is riding hers all alone, and that will spur the oldest to do it too.

I know, they are pretty old to still be on training wheels, but they just haven't shown much interest. Meanwhile, my nephew had his training wheels off before he turned two. SERIOUSLY. They couldn't find a bike with pneumatic tires for him! My BIL just cut the permanently attached trainers off of his plastic bike.

Woohoo - good luck at your first Tri Aaron - you'll do great. As for the swim, try not to stress about it too much, it will be over before you know it. Some tips:

  • don't put yourself in the middle of the pack at the start - start out a bit towards the back or the sides, that way, if anything, you're passing people, and not vice-versa.
  • Relax. Easier said than done, I know, but it's a huge benefit if you can just chill out a bit - calm your breathing, etc. If you're getting panicky/unsettled, tread water for a moment, or breaststroke or something to help you relax, then settle back in.
  • Don't blindly follow those around you - make sure you sight for yourself on the buoys, or you might be following someone who's going the wrong way!
  • Enjoy yourself- I always try to take a moment in the swim to just appreciate the fact that I'm able to participate in such a cool "leisure-time" activity- here I am, in the middle of a beautiful lake, the sun is shining, etc... enjoy it!

Have a great race, and tell us all about it when you're done!

Good Luck Aaron - I look forward to hearing about how if goes.

I did the tag along today - I thought that it was really slick. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to pull her. She did great and I really felt about the same. I think that she helped a little on the hills. It was a really enjoyable ride.

Matt- Don't feel bad about the training wheels - My oldest daughter used hers until she was eight. My son is still using his and he will be eight this July. He shows no interest in getting them off. They will do it when they are ready. I would recomend the tag along. It was a fun way to spend time with my daughter and workout.

Happy weekend everyone!

I am happy with May's workouts. Hope I can keep the same pace for June. My goal was 500k of riding but I ended up doing 712km and I ran 42km. I want to do at least 500k on the bike in June and up my running to 12-15km per week. This week alone I've put on 257k.

The weather is hot, hot, hot now so it's harder to do the amount of climbing I like. Plus I'm getting into crunch time at school and at home. I have report cards to do in the next two weeks, must get the rest of my Europe trip planned asap, I need to finish the yard and get the house ready for a house sitter for July. I guess I should probably get off the computer and do something.

Here's a picture of the "article" that came out in Bicycling Magazine this month. It was supposed to be an article about women and their riding goals, but they made it into a "makeover article" instead. For the record, the local hill has not defeated me three times and I have never walked my road bike up a hill. I have been known to stop and catch my breath, but that's it. Also, I've been riding clipped in since spring.

I am also experiencing some sharp pain (anoying most of the day) behind my knee cap. What is weird is that it usually does not hurt while running or biking unless I am riding off the saddle in uphills. What about yours?

I am ignoring my wife's advice to see the doctor but eventually I might have to. I am going to take a look at the article posted on your thread. Thanks for sharing this thread

Ahh, that sucks - knee problems are no fun. I had a similar type of pain when I started up, and went to see a very respected local sports med guy - actually, the doctor was Eric Heiden, former gold medal winning speed skater and professional cyclist, who worked at the UCD med center at the time... anyway, he told me that it was very common to have that kind of pain when you start running more, increasing mileage, etc. He recommended some strengthening exercises (mostly leg extensions, but only through the last 30 degrees of motion), stretching, and being conservative about increasing mileage. I took those suggestions and the pain went away after a while. Obviously, everyone's situation is different- my suggestion is - see a professional, if for no other reason than for peace of mind. If you've got good health insurance, might as well make use of it

Good luck and keep us up to date.

Good luck with your knee

Mine is fine on the bike, and swim. I only get the pain while running, and then for some time after.

If I sit for too long with the my leg bent, it hurts, or if I twist my knee, it hurts.

I have a friend who is an avid and experienced cyclist. I asked him if the bike could cause/contribute to the pain and he said yes, especially if I'm pointing my heels out. I have my pedals super loose, but I keep pretty good foot position. You might want to look at where you are pointing your toes/heels.

I just got back from the running shop, and two guys there both said that I was mis-fit for my current shoes. I was fit on 5-22 with a pair of neutral gait mizunos. I have really high arches.

When the guy fit me for them, I didn't know any better. They felt okay at the time. I didn't really know what to look for, other than people always told me that I had high arches. The guy that originally sold me the shoes said they looked normal. Well, okay, he's the pro.

When I went in today, two experienced guys both confirmed that the shoes that I bought were not right. One guy first tried to sell me a set of orthodic inserts. I pushed to have the shoes fit right in the first place, instead of making the shoes fit with inserts. When I told him that I got the shoes from their shop, he gave me the option of just swapping them out for another model, or to try the inserts for a little while.

At that point, I asked for his "official" recommendation and he got another guy into the conversation. Ultimately, they steered me towards the other model. It cost a lot more, but I feel better about it.

I'm going to avoid running for a couple more days and give it a try on Thursday morning. Even then its going to be a super short, super light jog. I'm only eleven days out from my first race. I'm not feeling so hot about the timing of this.

The other major factor is that I did stretch out my distance too fast. I slowly ramped up to 5 miles as my long run each week, then 6, 7, and 9 in successive weeks. As impatient as I am, I need to take my time ramping up. Although I have a marathon that I'd like to run on September 30th. I'm not sure I can train up to that slow enough.

The strengthening you describe is the second part of my own prescription to recovery and a cure. I need to get some leg strengthening underway. I have done zero weight training since I started training for tris. I figured I'd just work on cardio fitness and base building, then worry about strengthening in the offseason. I guess that plan isn't going to work so well.

I haven't been to see a sports doc yet, but I started checking them out locally. My athletic club is affiliated with the local hospital. They have a PT clinic with a bunch of orthos and sports injury doc right in the same building. I'll make an appointment in the next couple of days if this doesn't improve a lot in the short term.

Thanks for the input. It really helps to validate what I was thinking.
