Congrats to all of you! I have been watching the threads and have been so excited for all of your accomplishments.

It has been pouring raining here the last few days and I am trying to get back on track. I really stopped all my training over the holidays. Thanks for the encouragement on my training log. Now I am buried in about a foot of heavy snow. I think skiing and indoor riding will be my sports for now.

It's 70 degrees here- this is going to be an AMAZING week. Definitely will be worth waking up at 430 to get work out of the way- I'm done everything by noon Tu-Th and it's supossed to be upper 60s each day

Wellll to be fair I only am working about 20 hours a week. Winter class is too intense to let me do much more than that.
At least you get weekends off?

Ahh the weekends.  And I thought they were great in college.  Now, they are little blessings every five days.

Thanks for the video! Taken out of context, that was probably the worst video (and the longest) I've ever watched on YouTube -- b-o-r-i-n-g! So why is it that I was on the edge of my seat, pulled up a PDF of the Boston Map and elevation chart to cross-reference as it played, and yelled at the traffic to get out of the way? One word: obsessed. I can't wait to run this thing.

I didn't expect the road to be as windy and narrow in places, and for the route to be through such "neighborhoody" areas. Coming from the NYC and Burlington Marathons, which are largely "in-town", it seems very unique. Can't wait!

I shouldn't have watched it before going to bed. When I have dreams about running, I tend to act them out. The positive side: I get in an extra workout. Drawback: My wife gets bruised. Up early to the Y tomorrow morning!

Buenos noches!

Me neither. When it started I kept asking myself, "wait, does this race start in the high school parking lot?".

I knew that the first half or so was downhill but it is much more downhill than I pictured. Nevertheless, I am running a lot of hills between now and then. If you come across any websites talking about strategy for the course I would appreciate it.

I know that I have seen much better (and shorter) videos that give an aerial view of the course and I will look for those.

Speaking of Boston.  Here is the only way I'll ever cross the finish line there.

I've heard that whole day is just incredible.  Might have to go spectate one day.

I, of course, meant "fresh" in a running sense of the word but as I read it I realized that I really should use "fresh" in the 80's rap sense of the word more often.

A bucket of clams and a few Harpoon I.P.A.s really helped me across the finish line.

All you HR monitor wearing people, have you figured out your lactate threshold and all that? I am planning on doing mine for running this evening.

Wish me luck.

Paul,

Just began a quick canvas of websites:

Runner's World Forum on Hill Training for Boston: http://forums.runnersworld.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/960108738/m/91810... />Elevation Charts in Greater Detail: http://www.csurun.org/maps/BAA/

I'm drawing on a number of plans for training; one of them is Hal Higdon's:

http://www.halhigdon.com/boston/bostonbound.htm

Doing equal training running up and down steep inclines seems to be the recommendation of every article I've read, as its the downhills late in the race that people say do a runner's quads in. As far as race strategy, I've heard that negative splits are very possible and preferable. Otherwise, steady on the downhills early and late, ride the crowd up through Heartbreak. But I feel like I've only scratched the surface here.

Have you ever run with a pace group?

The easiest way to do it is to start with a 15min easy warm-up followed by 30min all-out time trial. 10 minutes into the time trial hit your lap/split button. Your average hr for the last 20min of your 30min time trial is your LT.

Folks with more experience, please correct me if I am wrong.

All excellent info. Thanks, Chris.

I've only run one marathon and for the first half I ran around the 3:15 group (not officially, I just tried to keep sight of their sign). At about half way through I split from them. Are you going to run with a pace group?

Paul,

I'd heard about pace groups, but didn't use them in my first two marathons. When I ran New Jersey, I decided to give it a try. I ran in the center of the 3:10 pack, which numbered about 25 people. the group was tight through mile fifteen, thinned by mile 17, and broke apart at mile 21. The pacer ran like a clock, the group broke the wind, and the energy of 25 people sailing along like a peloton was really helpful to me. I hit my goal in large part 'cause I was on cruise control with the group for 21 miles. I think I'll be with the 3 hour group; however, I don't know how Pace groups work with the wave start and the size of the field. I may decide to run solo -- or who knows, maybe with a BT group!

Chris/Paul,

I apologize for not digging through old posts. Remind me again, Chris and Paul are you both doing the Boston marathon? Chris it sounds like you are for sure. I just looked it up - April 21st. That sounds so soon.

Wow, that is awesome! I cannot even begin to think of that distance. Nor am I sure I want to. I am curious what is your current long mileage? What is the longest you will run before the race (during this training - not in previous years)? How is the training going?

It sounds like you do lactate threshold, Paul. I want to hear more about that. I am also interested in types of training. Do you do speed work or just focus on the miles?

Also, don't you have to qualify for the race? I would love to hear what race you qualified with and some of those details.

This type of information is the ultimate way to become inspired! Bring it on, give us the details! I know we can learn a lot from your experience!!!

Hi Candace,

Here are some answers for you:
Yes, both Chris and I are doing the Boston Marathon.

My current long run right now (12 weeks out) is 20 miles. This week I will do 60mpw, next week 70mpw, and 80mpw the following week. That ramp up is a little quicker than the 10% golden rule but I am okay with it. I will try to stay at 80mpw or above for the 10 weeks up to taper (around April 1st). During that time I will probably do long runs (>20miles) every other week. The longest will be four hours which is about 28-29 miles. There are groups that say that is unnecessary and groups that don't. I think I feel more confident if I have run the distance a couple times before the race.

I just started with the heartrate monitor and I don't know how I am going to use it. I have gone off of perceived effort in the past and thus far it looks like perceived effort sort of matches my heart rate zones. I will probably use them both. I really wanted the watch for the GPS though, so I could do more accurate tempo runs and even speed off the track.

I have just been running base miles but will start to incorporate speed workouts, hill workouts, and tempo runs this next week. Tempo runs are longer runs ran at a certain tempo like a 10mile run at marathon pace or maybe even a longer run broken into easy, med, fast pace, etc.

You do have to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The qualifying times are different for all ages and genders. Qualifying standards can be found here:

http://www.bostonmarathon.org/BostonMarathon/Qualifying.asp

I qualified at the Detroit Marathon.

Hope I answered your questions and thanks for giving me a reason to talk about myself. Hopefully Chris will chime in with his answers as well.
